The pros: Trader Joe’s Organic Frosted Brown Sugar and Cinnamon Toaster Pastries are Trader Joe’s answer to Pop Tarts.
The cons: They don’t quite live up to the originals they are trying to replicate.
I enjoy a good Pop Tart every now and again, but can the magic be replicated at Trader Joe’s? For starters there are several flavors available: Organic Frosted Strawberry, Organic Frosted Pomegranate, Organic Brown Sugar and Cinnamon and the seasonal Organic Frosted Pumpkin. I grabbed the flavor I’m most familiar with: the brown sugar and cinnamon. That is the flavor I distinctly remember reaching for.
Pop Tarts are not currently sold as being organic. These, however, are organic and reasonably priced for an organic item. Now, my best reference point is still Pop Tarts. While the flavor profile was pretty similar, there were certain things that made me say that this is likely not a product duplicate.
There is a ratio that Pop Tarts manages to make. There is a thick layer of frosting, followed by a generous filling. The balance is not present in the product. The ratio of pastry to filling tastes like 2:1 which is my biggest complaint. The flavors are pretty spot on, but the balance is just off. Had the brown sugar and cinnamon been more generous (along with the frosting) then you would have a near duplicate. However, if the pastry is your favorite part of the pastry, then you will love these. As for me, I was all about the frosting.
While the flavors are similar, the package is also similar. For $2.69 you are getting three foil packets with two pastries in each. These toasted well and quickly. While I prefer the standard Pop Tart over these, they weren’t dissimilar enough to not like them. If both were to exist in a store and were placed side by side, I would reach for the Pop Tarts every time. However, I would reach for them since Trader Joe’s is the place I’m most likely to shop at. They’re worth a try, just prepare your self for a product that could be better balanced.

Would I buy this again? I’d reach for Pop Tarts first, but Trader Joe’s Organic Frosted Brown Sugar and Cinnamon Toaster Pastries are an adequate substitute if you are only shopping at Trader Joe’s.
