Review of Trader Joe’s Beef and Broccoli
Flavor and Texture
Trader Joe’s Beef and Broccoli delivers on flavor with its savory, slightly sweet sauce that complements both the beef and broccoli. The beef strips are well-marinated, tender, and flavorful, while the broccoli retains a nice crispness, even after cooking.
I found the sauce to be well-balanced—not too salty or overly sweet—which makes it appealing for a wide range of palates. If you’re a fan of classic beef and broccoli dishes, this frozen version comes surprisingly close to the takeout experience.
Convenience and Value
This meal is incredibly convenient. With just a stovetop and less than 10 minutes, you can have a hot and satisfying dish ready to serve. The portion size is ideal for two people when paired with rice or noodles, though larger appetites might want to add an extra side.
At $7.99, it’s an affordable alternative to ordering takeout, especially when you consider the quality of the ingredients and the ease of preparation.
Overall
If you try this thinking this is traditional beef and broccoli, you may be disappointed as it isn't meant to replicate that. This is meant to be crispy and have a kick to it.

Ingredients
Trader Joe’s Beef and Broccoli uses a thoughtful mix of ingredients to deliver big flavors. Key components include:
- Beef Strips: Marinated for tenderness and flavor.
- Broccoli Florets: Crisp and vibrant, providing a healthy dose of vegetables.
- Soy-Based Sauce: A savory blend of soy sauce, garlic, ginger, and other seasonings for a balanced flavor profile.
The ingredient list avoids unnecessary fillers, focusing on high-quality proteins and vegetables to create a wholesome, flavorful meal.

Cooking Directions for Trader Joe’s Beef and Broccoli
Stovetop Directions
- Heat a Large Skillet or Wok: Preheat over medium-high heat. Add 1 tablespoon of oil (optional) to prevent sticking.
- Cook the Beef: Add the frozen beef strips to the skillet and stir-fry for about 3-4 minutes, or until they are browned and heated through.
- Add the Broccoli: Toss the frozen broccoli into the skillet and continue to stir-fry for 2-3 minutes, or until tender but still crisp.
- Heat the Sauce: Open the sauce packet, pour it into the skillet, and stir to coat the beef and broccoli evenly.
- Simmer and Serve: Reduce heat to low and let the mixture simmer for 1-2 minutes until the sauce is warmed through. Serve immediately.
Air Fryer Directions (For Beef and Broccoli)
- Preheat the Air Fryer: Set the air fryer to 375°F.
- Prepare the Beef: Place the frozen beef strips in a single layer in the air fryer basket. Avoid overcrowding for even cooking.
- Cook the Beef: Air fry the beef for 4-5 minutes, shaking the basket halfway through to ensure even browning. Remove the beef and set aside.
- Cook the Broccoli: Add the frozen broccoli to the air fryer basket. Air fry for 4-5 minutes, shaking the basket halfway through to achieve a tender yet slightly crispy texture.
- Reheat the Sauce: While the beef and broccoli are cooking, heat the sauce packet separately on the stovetop or microwave.
- Combine: Toss the cooked beef and broccoli with the warmed sauce in a large bowl or skillet to coat evenly before serving.
Microwave Directions (Optional)
While the stovetop method yields the best texture, you can microwave the beef and broccoli together in a covered microwave-safe dish for about 5-6 minutes, stirring halfway through. Heat the sauce separately and mix everything together before serving. While you technically can heat (or reheat) this dish in the microwave the beef coating does take on a gummy texture. So it should be the option of last resort for the best results.

They have changed the serving size to one cup (six servings per bag) for 230. If they were trying to lure the calorie conscious, it worked. My bad for not noticing just how much it’d add up if I ate 1/2 the bag. 😚 That said, I do wish they’d have provided the nutrition specifics on the sauce packet. That is where the calories are hiding (first ingredient is sugar 😬).
I prepared mine using just under half the pouch. It was PLENTY flavorful. I can only imagine how much more spicy would have been. 🤔
I agree with Brenda’s review. Surprisingly good for a freezer section meal, but not the same as fresh. I would prefer a bag w/out the broccoli, so I might add in fresh from the produce isle. It was tasty, but I was put off a bit because my first bite of beef was a questionable, unchewable piece that I had to pull from my mouth. Maybe I’m too picky. I dunno. 😂

Hey Elaine! Thanks for sharing this! And yes, I noticed that too (sometimes it is hard for me to keep up with all the reviews here, I'm over 1000) once you brought this comment up. I guess this will have to be one of my items I go back and revisit. Thanks again for taking the time out of your day to share!
