An unopened jar of Trader Joe's Granola Butter.

Apparently Trader Joe's looked at granola and thought, "But what if you could spread it on toast?"

Honestly?

They might be onto something.

Trader Joe's Granola Butter is an oatmeal based spread that gives you an alternative to the endless parade of peanut, almond, and sunflower seed butters lining grocery store shelves.

A 12-ounce jar is $5.49, and if you're someone who loves the sweet, toasty flavor of granola, this is a surprisingly fun product.

Imagine taking a bowl of sweetened granola and somehow turning it into the smooth, fluid consistency of nut butter.

That's basically what we've got here.

And I'm a fan.

Review

I wasn't entirely sure what to expect from something called Granola Butter.

Would it be gritty?

Would it actually taste like granola?

Would I immediately wish I had just bought peanut butter?

Thankfully, Trader Joe's nailed the most important part.

It really does taste like granola.

Oats provide the base, while brown sugar and maple syrup bring plenty of sweetness. There's also a pleasant vanilla note running through the spread and just enough salt to keep everything from tasting completely one dimensional.

Make no mistake, though.

This leans much more sweet than savory.

If you're looking for something that behaves like an unsweetened peanut or almond butter, this isn't going to be a direct replacement in terms of flavor.

But if you love sweetened granola?

Grab a spoon.

The easiest description is exactly what the name promises.

It tastes like sweet granola in spreadable form.

The oatmeal flavor provides that familiar toasted cereal quality, followed by brown sugar and maple syrup.

Then you get a little vanilla.

Finally, there's enough salt in the background to provide some contrast.

The maple isn't so aggressive that I'd call this maple butter. The vanilla isn't overwhelming either.

Everything works together to create that familiar sweet granola flavor.

Except now you can put it on toast.

Or pancakes.

Or apples.

Or a spoon at 10 p.m. while standing in front of the refrigerator.

Not that I'm suggesting anything.

If you're expecting a savory nut butter alternative, adjust your expectations.

Trader Joe's uses both brown sugar and maple syrup here, and you can tell.

This is substantially more sweet than savory.

Personally, I think that works because Trader Joe's isn't calling it oatmeal butter. They're calling it granola butter.

And granola is usually sweet.

The brown sugar gives it a deeper sweetness while the maple syrup works naturally with the oats. Vanilla adds another dessert-like quality.

The salt is important because it prevents the whole thing from becoming overwhelmingly sugary.

But sweetness definitely wins this particular tug-of-war.

Let's talk about the texture: this might be the most surprising part.

Trader Joe's Granola Butter has a texture remarkably similar to traditional nut butter.

It's smooth and fluid enough to spread easily rather than having the thick, pasty texture you might expect from ground oats.

Coconut oil helps give the spread that familiar richness and fluidity.

So even though there aren't nuts or seeds creating the creamy base, the experience of scooping it from the jar and spreading it onto something feels very familiar.

Depending on storage temperature, you may notice some changes in consistency because coconut oil naturally becomes firmer when cool and more fluid when warm.

Give the jar a good stir if needed.

This is probably going to be one of the biggest reasons some shoppers notice this product.

Most butter-like spreads are based on nuts or seeds.

Peanut butter.

Almond butter.

Cashew butter.

Sunflower seed butter.

Trader Joe's Granola Butter goes in a completely different direction by using an oat-based formulation.

So if sunflower seed butter isn't your thing, this gives you another option to consider.

That said, anyone shopping because of a food allergy should always check the current jar for ingredient, allergen, and cross-contact information rather than assuming a product is safe based solely on its primary ingredients. But this product is clearly labeled as being both vegan and gluten-free.

Recipes and manufacturing information can change.

Is Trader Joe's Granola Butter Worth $5.49? I think so.

You get 12 ounces for $5.49, and this isn't something you necessarily need to use in huge quantities.

A spoonful goes a long way on toast, fruit, pancakes, or oatmeal.

More importantly, it offers something different.

Trader Joe's has plenty of spreads, but this doesn't feel like another slightly altered peanut or almond butter.

It has its own identity.

If you love granola, I think there's a good chance you'll find plenty of excuses to work your way through the jar.

And that's where this gets interesting.

Because once I started thinking beyond toast, I realized there is a lot you can do with this stuff.

Nutritional facts, ingredients in Trader Joe's Granola Butter.

How to Serve Trader Joe's Granola Butter

Spread It on Toast

Start with the obvious. Toast + Granola Butter = extremely easy breakfast.

Add sliced banana, strawberries, or blueberries if you want to make it feel more substantial.

A sprinkle of cinnamon wouldn't hurt either. Or hear me out: make your own uncrustable.

Put It on Apple Slices

This might be one of my favorite combinations. Apples already pair beautifully with oats, brown sugar, maple, and vanilla.

Slice an apple and use the Granola Butter as a dip or spread.

Suddenly you're getting apple crisp vibes without actually baking an apple crisp.

Add It to Oatmeal

Oats on oats? Absolutely.

Swirl a spoonful into hot oatmeal and you're adding sweetness, richness, maple, vanilla, and more oat flavor all at once.

Because the Granola Butter is already sweetened, I'd taste the oatmeal before adding any additional sugar.

Overnight Oats

This could be particularly good in overnight oats.

Stir some Granola Butter into your oat mixture before refrigerating. Add berries or sliced banana the next morning. You're basically making granola-flavored oatmeal.

Pancakes and Waffles

Warm pancakes or waffles should soften the Granola Butter beautifully.

Spread it on top in place of regular butter, then decide whether you even need additional maple syrup.

Considering there's already maple syrup in the spread, you might not.

Banana Toast

Toast, Granola Butter, sliced banana, and cinnamon.

Done.

If you're feeling particularly fancy, add a tiny drizzle of honey or maple syrup, although this spread is already sweet enough that you probably won't need much.

Stuffed French Toast

Spread Granola Butter between two slices of bread before turning them into French toast.

The heat should soften the filling while the brown sugar, maple, vanilla, and oat flavors work naturally with the custardy bread.

This could get dangerous.

Use It as a Fruit Dip

Apples are obvious, but pears and bananas should work especially well too.

You could even put a small bowl of Granola Butter onto a fruit board as an alternative to the usual dessert dips.

Make a PB&J Without the PB

Use Granola Butter with your favorite jam or preserves.

Strawberry, raspberry, blueberry, or apple butter would all make sense.

It's not going to taste like a traditional peanut butter and jelly sandwich, but that's sort of the point.

Add It to a Smoothie

A spoonful can add oats, sweetness, vanilla flavor, and richness to a smoothie.

Banana would be the obvious partner.

Banana + Granola Butter + milk of choice + cinnamon sounds like breakfast without requiring chewing.

Drizzle It Over Ice Cream

If the Granola Butter is fluid enough, drizzle it over vanilla ice cream.

If it's too thick, gently warming a small amount should loosen the coconut oil.

The flavor combination would basically give you granola sundae energy.

Add It to a Parfait

Layer it with fruit and whatever creamy base you prefer, then add actual granola for crunch.

Yes, we're putting Granola Butter and granola together.

No, I don't see a problem.

Spread It on Rice Cakes

If you've ever looked at a plain rice cake and thought, "You desperately need a personality," here's your solution.

Granola Butter plus banana or apple slices turns it into a much more interesting snack.

Make Dessert Toast

Spread it over toasted brioche or sourdough and add sliced fruit, chocolate chips, or a little cinnamon.

At that point we're drifting away from breakfast and toward dessert.

I'm comfortable with that.

Eat It Straight From the Jar

I'm not here to judge you. I may have done it a few times.

How much is Trader Joe's Granola Butter?

It's $5.49 for a 12-ounce jar.

What is Trader Joe's Granola Butter made from?

This is an oat-based spread rather than a traditional nut or seed butter. Coconut and a neutral olive oil helps give it its smooth, spreadable consistency.

No. The consistency might remind you of nut butter, but the flavor is distinctly granola-like, with oats, maple, brown sugar, and vanilla.

Final Thoughts

Trader Joe's Granola Butter is one of those products that sounds slightly strange until you taste it.

Then it makes perfect sense.

Take the sweet, toasted flavor of granola, add brown sugar, maple syrup, vanilla, and a touch of salt, and somehow turn the whole thing into something with the consistency of nut butter.

That's essentially what Trader Joe's has done.

At $5.49 for 12 ounces, I think it's a solid buy, particularly if you're looking for something different from the usual nut and seed based spreads.

Just know what you're getting.

This isn't savory.

It isn't subtle.

It isn't pretending to be peanut butter.

It's sweet, creamy, oat-forward granola that you can spread on toast.

And frankly, I'm wondering why this wasn't a thing sooner.

I'd happily buy another jar.
