An unopened box of Trader Joe's Maple Leaf Ice Cream Sandwiches.

Trader Joe's has a habit of remixing their own classics, and the Maple Leaf Ice Cream Sandwiches are exactly that: maple leaf cookies sandwiched with creamy maple ice cream. On paper, it sounds like a no-brainer combination, especially since both items already have loyal followings. The question isn't whether this work: it's how it stacks up against the other frozen desserts Trader Joe's has become known for.

Review

These frozen treats feature two maple leaf-shaped cookies with a layer of maple ice cream in the middle. They're smaller and lighter than the Sublime Ice Cream Sandwiches, but still satisfy as a handheld dessert. Think of them as a seasonal alternative that leans on fall flavors without pushing into pumpkin-spice territory.

The first thing that stands out is the maple-on-maple flavor pairing. The cookies are Trader Joe's classic Maple Leaf Cookies, known for their buttery crunch and maple-flavored filling. In this case, the filling is swapped out for maple ice cream, which is smooth, creamy, and subtly sweet. Together, the flavors are cohesive: maple-forward without tasting artificial or cloying.

The cookies hold up surprisingly well in frozen form. They're firm enough to provide structure but soften just enough against the ice cream so you're not fighting through each bite. Compared to some frozen sandwiches where the cookie turns rock-hard, this was a pleasant surprise.

That said, the ice cream itself doesn't carry the same richness as the salted maple version. Without the salted element, the flavor feels a bit flatter and one-note, especially after a few bites. It's still enjoyable, but it doesn't deliver that crave-worthy contrast of sweet and salty. It also lacks the same hue as the.maple ice cream

In terms of portion, these sandwiches are smaller than you might expect, but that works in their favor. They feel like a responsible dessert - indulgent enough to satisfy a sweet tooth, yet lighter than the Sublime Ice Cream Sandwiches. If Sublimes are your "Friday night treat-yourself" dessert, these are more of a midweek indulgence you won't feel guilty about.

Overall, this is a smart seasonal mash-up that makes sense, tastes good, and gives maple lovers a reason to celebrate. Just don't expect it to dethrone the all-time frozen favorites in the TJ's aisle.

Final Thoughts

Trader Joe's Maple Leaf Ice Cream Sandwiches are a fun fall dessert that combine two popular products into one. They're tasty, maple-forward, and more portion-friendly than some of Trader Joe's heavier desserts. While they don't rise to the indulgent glory of the Sublime Ice Cream Sandwiches, they're still worth picking up if you love maple and want a freezer treat that feels seasonal but not over the top.

I had heard average reviews about this but was pleasantly surprised how good I thought they were. But I'm a sucker for maple. My biggest complaint was the ice cream seemed to slide out of the back whenever I took a bite.

Side note: while I get why maple seems like an autumnal flavor, living smack in the middle of NY I know that maple season is right around March. I feel like this year ALL the stores seem to be really pushing the maple products. Or I'm just sensitive because it's out of season lol

Hey thanks for sharing! I'm very jealous. I'm downstate NY. But you are 100% correct. I guess they need something other than just pumpkin to push for the season.

I was in Dutchess County (hence the King of Beacon name) but now I'm in the Capital Region.
