One of the items I've enjoyed most from my bridal shower is my water infuser. We ended up getting one as a gift and then we bought other one for ourselves. We actually keep two in the refrigerator. And yes, we do drink that much water in my household. Lemon and lemon lime are flavors I've infused before. They both work very well. All you have to do is have an infuser, chop up the fruit and make sure the fruit stay submerged. Lemon is always a hit in my household. But now, I might have to give the herb section a bit more thought now that I know that ginger works well.
Now, Trader Joe's cheated a little bit here. They use extracts to flavor the water. That's a bit of a bummer as I was hoping for a truly natural flavor. Isn't that what organic is supposed to be all about? Nonetheless, this is a successful and tasty pairing of flavors. The smell is more lemon than ginger. But the taste is a balance between the two. The ginger flavor was not giving any heat for those who might be concerned about that. It was very soothing to drink. Ginger is sometimes used to treat nausea. Served cold from the refrigerator, it was a refreshing summer drink with flavor but no calories.
For $0.99 per bottle, this can add up quickly if you really enjoy the flavors. In fact, in my house it pretty much pays for us to have our own infusers. Or if you are a Whole Foods shopper you might have laughed a little bit about their $6 infused water debacle (that they removed from shelves). Whether you are dropping under $1 or $6, infusing water is very basic and may not be worth paying for.
We own a water infuser (or two), but this is not a flavor combination that we would have thought to put together. If you find that you enjoy infused water, then a water infuser pitcher might be the way to go. We got ours from Bed, Bath and Beyond, but the same pitcher is also available on Amazon.com. The flavor possibilities are endless when infusing water. Our favorite? Apples with a stick of cinnamon. Strawberries are a close second. As long as you keep the fruit submerged it will last a long time. Best of all, you can add that to your favorite refillable bottle of water to cut down on trash.
As a flavor combination, it's worth a try at least once. The flavors here just work together, but it can easily be done at home.
