Review of Trader Joe's Mashed Sweet Potatoes

Flavor and Texture

The flavor of Trader Joe's Mashed Sweet Potatoes is simple and natural, with a slight hint of sweetness that doesn't overpower. They're lightly seasoned, which allows you to customize them to your taste, whether you prefer savory herbs or sweet cinnamon.

The texture is smooth and creamy, with no lumps or grit, making it easy to serve as-is or use as a base for other recipes. I appreciated how the flavor stayed true to sweet potatoes, without any artificial aftertaste or unnecessary additives.

Convenience

What really sets this product apart is its convenience. The frozen discs make it easy to portion out exactly how much you need, whether you're cooking for one or a crowd. In just a few minutes on the stovetop or microwave, you have warm, creamy mashed sweet potatoes ready to go. It's a time-saver that still feels homemade.

At $2.99, it's an affordable option for adding a healthy and flavorful side dish to your meal rotation.

Overall

This is a fantastic seasonal side with minimal effort. Even for young children who might be experiencing solids for the first time, the portions here are small enough to accommodate. For the older crowd, this is a massive time saver with minimal ingredients and easy preparation.

Ingredient

Trader Joe's Mashed Sweet Potatoes have a refreshingly short ingredient list:

  • Sweet Potatoes: The primary and only ingredient, providing the natural sweetness and vibrant orange color.

The simplicity of the ingredients is a major plus, ensuring that you're getting a wholesome, minimally processed product.

How to prepare:

Microwave preparation is the easiest at taking 12 pieces and microwaving them covered for 2 to 2.5 minutes. Need the whole bag? Then cook on high for 6 minutes.

Stovetop preparation will take a bit longer at 12 pieces and will need 1-2 tablespoons of water and 5 to 6 minutes on medium. The whole bag needs ¼ of a cup of water and about 10 minutes.

Either method works well and neither seemed superior to the other.

As they are unseasoned, a bit of cinnamon, nutmeg, or pie spice might be good.

I was so excited to find this! I love that it's just the potato, every other mashed potato or veg i have found always includes dairy (ugh).
I like my sweet potatoes savory so i added in a lot of black pepper, salt, chopped scallions and some nutritional yeast for a tasty side. I also used some for a quick weeknight soup! I defrosted in the microwave and then whisked into some veg broth and coconut milk with black beans, some "cruciferous crunch" and a spoon of curry paste- it was delicious and took maybe 15min start to finish!
