Riddle me this- What color is watermelon really? Watermelon Jolly Ranchers seem to be pink, most watermelons I've purchased have a pink interior. So why is there such a terrible mismatch between the color of the box of Trader Joe's Sparkling Watermelon Juice and of the liquid hiding inside these cute cans?

Taste and review

Without the need to photograph everything, you might be a regular person just enjoying a refreshing sip right out of the can.

In my world, I take pictures. Of. Everything.

So when I sat down and took pictures of this I was greeted by a pretty pink-hued box and correspondingly watermelon-ish colored cans.

Then it was time for the pour shot.

First I thought it was my lens or lighting. Nope, an orange-hued drink comes out of these cans.

It was a complete mismatch between taste and visual.

Despite this detail what you have is pretty much natural watermelon flavored soda.

This soda despite the calorie count on the can is just as bad as a regular soda. The main difference is that most sodas are in 12-ounce cans while this can is just under 8.5 ounces. So you are pretty close in calorie count.

But you are getting something that soda doesn't have: fiber and potassium. I'm pretty sure it is reasonable to believe that there might be other vitamins in this drink that just aren't listed. You can see how nutrient-dense real watermelon is here. But again, I have no way of knowing for certain which one of those might have made it into the can.

Despite all this, the drink does taste good. Like drinking carbonated watermelon juice along the lines of Trader Joe's Cold Pressed Watermelon Juice that is seasonally available in the refrigerated section.

So if you are a watermelon AND soda fan you'll probably really like this, but this is a seasonal item and I've already heard rumors this is close to done for the season.

Overall

For $3.99 for four cans it's affordable for a specialty soda.

Would I buy this again? For me, Trader Joe's Sparkling Watermelon Juice is a one-and-done, but if you are watermelon obsessed, this is a good item to try.

Did you try it?  Let me know what you think in the comments section!

I had very fleetingly thought about buying this but decided against it. Like you said it is just natural sugar from watermelon and it has some potassium e TC. And it is certainly better than a 12 oz Coke that comes in at 39 grams of sugar but I think I'll still stick with naturally flavored carbonated mineral waters with zero sugar for now and possibly add in a very small splash of juice.
