A Trader Joe's Tikka Masala Curry Sauce on a pink surface.

Ever since I started reviewing Trader Joe's tikka masala items from the freezer section, my takeaway was always the same. I wished they would just sell the sauce on its own. So when Trader Joe's finally released a Tikka Masala Curry Sauce, I was excited. Maybe a little too excited.

And at first, I did not love it.

Review

Trader Joe's Tikka Masala Curry Sauce comes in an 8.8 ounce pouch and is labeled as a simmer sauce. It is thick, deeply spiced, and clearly meant to be cooked rather than poured straight over food. Think of this less as a finished sauce and more as a concentrated base.

This is important information. Ask me how I know.

The first time I used this sauce, I thought it missed the mark. It felt heavy, overly thick, and not quite right. But after a second look and a little trial and error, I realized the issue was not the sauce. It was user error.

This sauce is concentrated. Very concentrated. It is not meant to be used straight from the pouch the way you might with a jarred pasta sauce. Once I treated it like a base and cut it with another ingredient, everything clicked.

For me, the magic combination is a can of reduced fat coconut milk. Once mixed together, the sauce transforms. The warm spices open up, the texture smooths out, and suddenly it tastes very close to the tikka masala flavor people love from Trader Joe's freezer meals. It is not an exact dupe, but it is close enough that it scratches the same itch.

I have experimented with other mix ins like heavy cream and half and half. They work, but coconut milk is still my favorite. It complements the spices instead of muting them and gives the sauce that familiar tikka masala richness without feeling heavy.

This is not a sauce I would throw into a slow cooker. The flavors are best when handled gently. My preferred method is to cook the protein separately, then add the sauce and coconut milk and let everything simmer together for about 20 to 30 minutes. That is it. No need to rush it or overcook it.

Once I figured this out, this sauce became a regular purchase for me. It is one of those items that quietly overdelivers if you know how to use it.

Nutritional facts and ingredients in Trader Joe's Tikka Masala Curry Sauce.

How to Use It Successfully

  • Serve with rice, naan, or roasted vegetables
  • Treat it like a concentrated curry base
  • Always cut it with coconut milk, cream, or half and half
  • Cook your protein first, then add the sauce
  • Simmer gently for 20 to 30 minutes

Top Tip

This sauce is probably not meant to be used as is. Coconut milk from a can was the best pairing to mellow out the concentrated flavors.

Pairing Suggestions for Trader Joe's Tikka Masala Curry Sauce

Proteins That Work Best

Chicken thighs or breasts
This is the classic for a reason. The sauce clings well and stays juicy, especially when simmered gently with coconut milk.

Chickpeas
Perfect for a vegetarian option. Chickpeas soak up the spices and give you a hearty bite without overpowering the sauce.

Tofu
Extra firm tofu works best. Pan sear first so it holds its shape before simmering in the sauce.

Shrimp
Add at the very end so they stay tender. Shrimp pair beautifully with the warm spices once the sauce is cut properly.

Vegetables That Love Tikka Sauce

Cauliflower
Roast first, then fold into the sauce for texture and depth.

Bell peppers and onions
Add sweetness and balance the spices nicely.

Spinach or kale
Stir in at the end for color and a little bitterness to round things out.

Sweet potatoes
Soft, sweet, and excellent at absorbing flavor.

FAQs about Trader Joe's Tikka Masala Curry Sauce

Below is a list of frequently asked questions about this product

Is this the same sauce used in Trader Joe's frozen tikka masala meals?

No, but it is very close once prepared correctly.

Do you need to add something to it?

Yes. Coconut milk, cream, or half and half is essential.

Would you buy it again?

Yes. This is now a regular purchase for me.

Is it spicy?

Not really, there is some heat here but it is pretty mild. If you are a spice junky you'll have to add some chili powder or other ground pepper to kick it up a notch.

Recipe Suggestions

Classic Chicken Tikka Shortcut

Cook diced chicken thighs or breasts in a pan until browned. Add one pouch of sauce plus one can of coconut milk. Simmer 20 minutes. Finish with cilantro and serve over basmati rice.

Vegetarian Chickpea Tikka

Sauté onion and garlic. Add chickpeas, sauce, and coconut milk. Simmer gently. Stir in spinach at the end and serve with naan.

Creamy Tikka Masala

Use heavy cream or half and half instead of coconut milk for a richer, milder sauce. Best with chicken or roasted vegetables.

Roasted Veggie Tikka Bowl

Roast cauliflower, sweet potatoes, and bell peppers. Toss into the diluted sauce and simmer briefly. Serve over rice or quinoa.

Shrimp Tikka

Add shrimp during the last 5 minutes of simmering so they stay tender. Finish with lime juice.

Final Thoughts

Trader Joe's Tikka Masala Curry Sauce is a perfect example of a product that deserves a second chance. On its own, it can feel thick and underwhelming. But once you cut it with coconut milk and let it simmer properly, it turns into something genuinely delicious.

This is not a dump and go sauce. It is a concentrated base that rewards a little intention. If you tried it once and walked away disappointed, try it again using this method. You may find yourself adding it to your regular rotation like I did.
