Let's address the most important part first. If you are buying these because you love cookie dough, Trader Joe's understood the assignment.

Each bite gives you substantially more cookie dough than you would normally find in cookie dough ice cream. There is vanilla ice cream here, but it knows its place. The cookie dough is the star and the ice cream is basically there to make sure we can technically call this a frozen dessert.

And I am completely fine with that arrangement.

The cookie dough has that familiar soft, slightly dense texture you want. You get the buttery sweetness, the little chocolate chips, and enough actual dough in every bite that you never find yourself wondering where it went. And it's the textural contrast between the slightly sugary grit that is cookie dough and the smooth vanilla ice cream.

If your biggest complaint about traditional cookie dough ice cream is that manufacturers seem to ration the cookie dough like there is a worldwide shortage, this product fixes that problem.

The vanilla ice cream itself is good. It is creamy, pleasant, and perfectly fine. Is it memorable? Not particularly. But I also don't think anyone is standing in the Trader Joe's freezer aisle staring at a bag called Cookie Dough Ice Cream Bites and thinking, "I hope the vanilla ice cream really steals the show."

It doesn't.

The cookie dough does.

Texture wise, these work really well straight from the freezer. You get the cold, creamy ice cream paired with the softer chew of the cookie dough. That contrast makes them more satisfying than simply eating chunks of frozen cookie dough.

And then we need to discuss the word "bites."

Yes, technically they are bite sized.

No, that does not mean they are portion controlled.

There are roughly a dozen in a bag, and it is alarmingly easy to sit down with the intention of eating two or three and suddenly discover you are holding an empty bag.

My biggest complaint is the price. At $4.79 per bag, you are not getting a tremendous amount of dessert. With only about a dozen bites inside, these feel a little expensive for what you get. My other big complaint is that while Trader Joe's sells cookie dough, it is not safe to eat unbaked.

And yet, here is where my argument completely falls apart.

I've bought another bag almost every week.

So apparently I have decided that $4.79 is too expensive while simultaneously voting with my wallet every time I walk through the freezer aisle.

That probably tells you more about how much I like these than any rating I could give them.

If you aren't a cookie dough person, there is absolutely no reason to buy these. This product isn't going to convert you. But if you are the person digging through cookie dough ice cream looking for the good stuff, Trader Joe's finally fixed the ratio.

Serving Suggestions

These really don't need much help, but there are a few ways to make them even more dangerous.

Eat them straight from the freezer This is the obvious answer and probably the best one.

Add them to an ice cream sundae Chop a couple and scatter them over vanilla or chocolate ice cream for even more cookie dough.

Make an absurdly good milkshake Blend a few with vanilla ice cream and milk, then add another chopped bite on top.

Add them to a dessert board Pair them with brownies, cookies, strawberries, and other small frozen treats for an easy dessert spread.

Use them as a brownie topping Place a bite on top of a warm brownie right before serving. The ice cream will start melting while the cookie dough stays soft. I mean a brookie is never a bad choice right?
