The pros:Â Trader Joe's Chipotle Black Bean Dip is a smokey and thick dip.
The cons: The smoke flavor is very strong with this one.
The verdict: Â There is a fine gap in my work day where I get hungry. It's somewhere between lunch and getting to the gym before dinner. Now, I don't recommend bean dip before hitting the gym. But some snacks are more filling than others.
This isn't the same as having some pico de gallo as a snack. Nope, this is filling and eats more like a meal. At 35 calories per serving it's better than reaching for a candy bar.
But depending on the type of flavor you might enjoy will dictate whether or not this is a good match for you. If you are say making nachos at home, then this might make a good topper with one major caveat.
The smoke flavoring with this is strong. Very strong. It was the reason my husband liked it, but I wasn't so thrilled about it. He loves anything smokey. The stronger the better. He is unafraid to use any of my smoked salts or liquid smoke with what he eats.
The heat here is present but mild. The texture is as expected with a black bean dip. It's a very similar texture to say Trader Joe's Refried Pinto Beans Salsa Style.
For $1.99 this is thick dip, so bring some heavy chips like Trader Joe's Restaurant Style Tortilla Chips that won't break easily. This dip can be a hit or miss depending on the flavors you like.

Would I buy this again? Trader Joe's Chipotle Black Bean Dip gets only gets a maybe in my book. I think for some the smokey flavor might be overpowering. With some nachos (and melted cheese) it was a bit more tolerable, but I don't think this product is as good or as balanced as it should be.

I love Trader Joe's chipotle black bean dip. I agree it is a little oo strong to dip into straight. But mix in a 1/2 cup of refried beans, and it's a delicious, cheap and filling snack.
