I am a proud chocoholic. The more chocolate the better. In fact, I believe that chocolate is almost a dietary need. If you feel the same love and passion that I do about chocolate, then you might want to give Trader Joe's Chocolate Lava Cakes a try.
Taste and review
Up until recently, I thought the now discontinued Trader Joe's Molten Chocolate Macaron was one of the best chocolate desserts for both the calories and money. It was basically a lava cake, but without the cake. It was the crisp macaron cookie that made it so irresistible. Unfortunately, they decided to keep the Molten Salted Butterscotch, but not the much better tasting chocolate variety.
But truth be told, there are now two of these chocolate lava cakes on shelves. This frozen one and the microwavable mug cake, which you could totally sub out the caramel for a piece of chocolate by the way.
For $2.99 you get two reasonably, responsibly, and portion-controlled cakes that are very rich and full of chocolate flavor. In a matter of 45 seconds, you go from frozen to the molten cake. How chocolatey is this? You'll want a scoop of vanilla ice cream to cut through the richness here. This is a dessert is something that you'll have to slow down and savor. At nearly 400 calories each, these are almost a meal in and of themselves.
The cake is soft on the outside, it gets fudgier as you move closer to the center. The center is like a pool of melted chocolate. It has a taste that is like eating raw brownie batter (not that you are supposed to eat that).
This is decadent and with some careful removal from the plastic it comes in could rival what you might get at your local restaurant. If this does not satisfy your sweet tooth, then a drizzle of chocolate or butterscotch, a dollop of whipped cream, or a scoop of ice cream would make this even more decadent. If you really really like chocolate, then this is something you should try. If I can spare the calories, I'd repurchase this.
Overall
Would I buy this again? Yes. My heart and thighs say no, but my taste buds say yes. It's not something I'll buy every week, but when I need my chocolate fix, this is a good match.

How do you think these compare with their chocolate babka? I thought that latter was the most chocolatey dessert they sold, but now you have me wondering. And I am going to Trader Joe's on Saturday morning...

These are on different levels. I feel like the babka was had more textures of chocolate. This was far more intense per bite and wanted vanilla ice cream to cut through the richness if that makes sense. If I could spare the calories I think I would still reach for the babka.
