The pros: Â Trader Joe's Chocolate Sunflower Seed Drops reminded me of peanut M&M's except these are much smaller, more filling, and well, no peanuts in them but...
The cons:Â While they taste like peanut M&Ms, the allergy warning does mention some possible cross contamination. Don't leave these in direct sunlight as the natural food coloring will fade extremely quickly.
The verdict: Â If I had to pick one candy I reach for (other than when I am at Trader Joe's), then it would probably be M&Ms. I love them and their crisp shell. I also like Trader Joe's Candy Coated Drops. But they are only available in a single flavor. There is no option for say peanut drops, mint drops, peanut butter drops, or heck almond butter drops.
But these have some similarities too. These are also naturally colored and have just a bit of chocolate. So keep these away from sunlight. I left them in the winter sun and they were magically faded in one afternoon. But they are so much smaller than the candy coated drops.
But despite their small size, they also have a glaring taste difference. But they also taste more like peanut M&Ms in an odd way. What's the nice is that you can have a handful of these and feel relatively satisfied. That doesn't mean that this will sit around, but it is a filling snack that you can use the sunflower seeds as being nutritious.
My only complaint with these is the allergy warning. Now, I have no food allergies. I feel like Trader Joe's could do a better job keeping an eye out for the nut free crowd. These would be ideal except for the fact that they may contain traces of peanuts.
The serving size is reasonable as long as you reseal the plastic container. For $2.99 I've purchased these several times. They are sweet, crunchy, and are satisfying.

I love these too. I even threw some into a batch of rice krispie treats I made once (after the mix had cooled). Super yummy.

I was wondering how these would hold up to being put in cookies or some other sweet item. Now I know :). They're probably easier to mix in too. Those sounds really good by the way!

Yup. Just wait till they're practically cool or it becomes kind of a melty mess. Or you could just spread them on top and pat them in. Really pretty topper.
