The pros: Trader Joe's Dark Chocolate Peanut Butter Cups does not disappoint in making the classic peanut butter cup, rich dark chocolate that isn't waxy or too sweet. Chocolate is a nice contrast to the sweet peanut butter filling.
The cons: I might take some adjustment to having dark chocolate with this.
The verdict: For $0.99 for the small bag in the checkout aisle I was surprise how good these are. They do sell these in a larger size which now knowing that I ate this whole bag in one sitting, I'll probably only buy the small bag. I'm not going to compare these to going to a fine chocolate store as that's not a fair comparison, especially for what I paid for this. The best thing to compare this to is a Reese's Peanut Butter Cup. I don't know if it's age or the recipe has changed over time, but the chocolate in a Reese's seems less chocolatey and more waxy and sweet. It's not a terrible thing as the peanut butter filling is the highlight of that treat. That's not the case here. The chocolate is very assertive and is a nice dark chocolate that isn't overly sweet. My biggest concern here was that I would miss the familiar Reese's peanut butter filling taste. Truth is this had more of a peanut butter taste and I liked it better that a Reese's. I know there is a milk chocolate one and I'm positive that there will be a review of that in the coming weeks. This is worth a try.
