The pros: Trader Joe's Dark Chocolate Powerberries are a pretty tasty snack and are similar, but not identical to Brookside's Dark Chocolate Fruit Flavored Centers.
The cons: If you are used to Brookside's Dark Chocolate Fruit Flavored Centers, then you might find the center of these dry and somewhat grainy or more crystallized.
The verdict: For $3.49 you get a half pound bag of Trader Joe's Dark Chocolate Powerberries. These are similar to Brookside's Dark Chocolate Fruit Flavored Centers, but are not an exact copy. In terms of appearance, these are not nearly as highly polished nor are they as perfectly round as the Brookside Chocolates. These also have less of a thick gel center and there are no flavor varieties within the bag. What you get that is similar are the superfood (fruit) buzzwords of the moment in the center. The dark chocolate was a bit waxy tasting and the dark chocolate could have been more intense.
But that isn't why you buy these. The star here is the center. If you are hoping for a smooth center, you will be disappointed. The center is more crystallized than a Brookside's would be and I didn't find that to be a bad thing. I liked the added texture. Maybe not after the first few candies, but I started to embrace it after a few bites. It seems more fruity as well. It's not a distinct fruit taste either. It's the blend of buzz word superfoods of the moment (acai, pomegranate, cranberry and blueberry mentioned on the bag. Overall, I liked these. They were tasty and had an interesting texture. I'd buy them again.
