Every so often Trader Joe's releases a dessert that makes you stop mid aisle and whisper this is going home with me. Trader Joe's Ice Cream Macaron Sandwiches are exactly that kind of treat. Oversized macarons packed with ice cream is not a combination anyone needed, yet somehow it feels like something we should have all had in our lives sooner. These were first released in 2025 and now they are back, proving once again that Trader Joe's really does know how to keep the freezer section fun.

Review

Let me start by saying these are not petite, delicate macarons. These are supersized, overachieving macarons that walk into the room and immediately demand that you clear your schedule. Each one is large enough to double as a small dessert plate. The chocolate macaron shells are incredibly similar to the chocolate ones in the year round macaron pack, which is already one of the most consistent frozen desserts at Trader Joe's. They have that perfect combination of crackly exterior and soft chewy interior that makes you forget you bought them for under five dollars.

Now let us talk about the ice cream inside. This is where Trader Joe's really flexes. The ice cream tastes like something you would scoop from a premium pint. Smooth, creamy, chocolate rich, and not one bit icy. When you bite into it, the macaron shell softens slightly but stays intact, creating this perfect bite of chewy and creamy together. It is indulgent in a way that feels almost unfair for a product sold next to turkey meatballs.

If you remember the long-discontinued molten macarons, this feels like their cold weather cousin. Different temperature, same indulgent soul. These are playful, decadent, and genuinely well executed.

Of course, this is me, so here is the honesty. Some of mine were a bit lopsided. A few shells looked like they needed emotional support. Others had uneven filling, like the ice cream shifted during packing and never came back. But once you start eating them, the imperfections become part of the charm. These are not showpieces for a dessert table. These are freezer splurges that you devour enthusiastically.

They do soften quickly. Take them from the freezer and wait a minute or two for the shells to relax slightly, but do not walk away. The window between perfectly soft and tragic puddle is very small.

Overall, these are delicious, fun, and absolutely worth tossing into your cart before they disappear.

Serving Suggestions

Let them warm slightly
One to two minutes is perfect. Any longer and you will have a melted macaron situation.

Slice before serving
Use a sharp knife to cut them into halves or even quarters. It makes them easier to share and feels very fancy.

Pair with something warm
Coffee, espresso, chai, or even a hot chocolate creates a lovely hot and cold contrast.

Garnish the plate
A little whipped cream, cocoa powder, or chocolate drizzle turns this into a plated dessert moment.

Bring in fruit
Raspberries, sliced strawberries, or even fresh cherries add a bright contrast to all the chocolate richness.

Final Thoughts

Trader Joe's Ice Cream Macaron Sandwiches are the kind of dessert that make you feel like you are treating yourself to something fancy without spending bakery prices. They combine chewy macaron texture with rich chocolate ice cream and manage to feel indulgent, playful, and satisfying. Even with a few lopsided pieces, the flavor is absolutely worth it. If you spot these during your next freezer aisle stroll, pick up a box and enjoy a dessert that feels like a little moment of luxury at home.
