A few years back, Trader Joe's surprised us with a full sized Beef en Croute for the holidays. It was not perfect, but it was festive, hearty, and by today's standards, pretty affordable. Fast forward to this year and they have taken that idea and resized it into appetizer form with the new Mini Filet Mignon en Croute. At nearly ten dollars a box, you would expect a rich, meaty, Wellington style bite.
Unfortunately, this one took a very different path.

Review
Trader Joe's Mini Filet Mignon en Croute comes frozen with small puff pastry wrapped bites that promise tender beef, mushroom duxelles, and a golden bake. They look adorable in theory and feel like the kind of appetizer you would put out for a holiday gathering when you want something elegant with minimal effort.
But once you open the box and taste a few, reality sets in quickly.
If someone handed one of these to me and whispered that the center was vegan, I would nod politely and believe them. The mushroom flavor is not just present. It is the entire experience. You taste mushroom, you see mushroom, you feel mushroom. What you do not find is beef.
I tried several pieces and struggled to locate even a hint of filet mignon. If I added up every tiny shred I found in the entire bag, I still do not think I could build a single full bite. Once I reread the ingredient list, everything made sense. Beef was the second to last ingredient. Egg was the last. So calling this Filet Mignon en Croute feels generous in the same way calling a cracker dinner feels gourmet.
The pastry on the outside is fine. Light, buttery, bakes up golden. But the filling? Pure mushroom with a suggestion of beef the way a candle suggests vanilla. If you were expecting a mini beef Wellington, this is nowhere close. What you get is a mushroom stuffed puff bite that might contain microscopic beef crumbs.
If you love mushrooms, this could work for you. But if you want a meaty holiday appetizer, this will break your heart. I left this review with one overwhelming thought. This is a skip. A total skip. I will not be repurchasing. And for $10 I was hoping for a meaty appetizer, not just 2nd to last ingredient pretending like it's a primary ingredient.

How to Serve
If you end up buying them, here are a few ways you might salvage them:
- Pair with a creamy horseradish dip to add sharpness
- Serve alongside a beefier appetizer to balance the flavors
- Add to a vegetarian appetizer spread since they practically fit the theme
- Brush with garlic butter after baking for more depth
But honestly, there are many better Trader Joe's appetizers to spend ten dollars on. You can see my list of best frozen appetizers here.

FAQs about Trader Joe's Mini Filet Mignon en Croute
Below is a list of frequently asked questions about this product
Barely. Beef is the second to last ingredient.
Yes, the pastry itself is fine. The filling is the issue.
Not unless you are specifically feeding mushroom lovers.
Final Thoughts
Trader Joe's Mini Filet Mignon en Croute is one of the biggest misses of the holiday season. The pastry is fine, but the filling is overwhelmingly mushroom based with only the barest whisper of beef. The name sets up expectations this product simply cannot deliver.
If you want something meaty, savory, and special for the holidays, there are far better options in the Trader Joe's freezer aisle. This one is a skip for me and will not make my holiday table again.
