Trader Joe's Panettone and Chocolate Gelato Frozen Style Dessert is one of those holiday surprises that instantly sounds festive. You see panettone, chocolate, fruit, citrus peel, and something that sounds very close to gelato and you think this might be the sleeper hit of the season. Then you read the label a little more closely and realize it is not actually gelato. It is gelato frozen style dessert, which is the food version of saying trust me bro. And the texture is more Cool-Whip than full blown ice cream.

Still, with a new for 2025 label and a price of four forty nine per pint, I was curious. Panettone in frozen form is not something you see often. And flavor wise, there is a lot happening here.

Trader Joe's Panettone and Chocolate Gelato Frozen Style Dessert is a frozen dessert meant to mimic the texture of gelato. It comes in a pint sized container with a dramatic chocolate swirl right at the top. Inside you will find tiny pieces of panettone mixed throughout along with citrus peel and brandied fruit flavoring.

The dessert is lightly textured, creamy, and sweet with flavors meant to echo traditional Italian holiday panettone.

The first thing you taste is how light this dessert is. It has the airy feel of gelato without the dense rich mouthfeel you usually get from a true Italian style version. It is buttery in flavor but not heavy in texture. There is even a caramel like note that rounds it out in a very pleasant way.

Once you dig in a little deeper, you start hitting the teeny tiny cubes of panettone. They add some interest but do not bring a ton of chew. The citrus peel (flavor not texture) and brandied fruit flavor come through immediately. This dessert does not hide its panettone inspiration at all. It tastes like it has the elements just misses on the dairy dessert part.

Up top you get a huge swirl of chocolate. It looks dramatic and scoops up beautifully, but it does make you wish the entire pint had that intensity running through it. Once you move past that first layer, the chocolate becomes more of a background note.

Overall, Trader Joe's Panettone and Chocolate Gelato Frozen Style Dessert is not bad. It is sweet, festive, and fun to try at least once. But the labeling and texture do feel like a corner cut. You can tell this is not true gelato and not a premium ice cream either. It sits in a middle space there like Cool Whip which is just too airy to pretend to be a dessert and not a topping.

The flavor captures panettone nicely and the citrus is bright without being sharp. If you enjoy holiday baked goods turned into frozen desserts, this is worth a try. If you wanted full bodied gelato or a creamier premium ice cream, you'll be better off reaching for the actual dessert from the shelves.

I wanted to like this, but as I looked through my freezer I wasn't drawn to it. Some desserts are straight up addicting, but this wasn't one of them. It's a one and done in my book. Cool idea, but execution needs to step up.

FAQs about Trader Joe's Panettone and Chocolate Gelato Style Frozen Dessert

Below is a list of frequently asked questions about this product:

What does the flavor taste like?

Panettone with citrus peel, brandied fruit, and a chocolate swirl.

Are there chunks of cake in it?

Yes, small pieces of panettone throughout.

Does this taste like real gelato?

No. Corners were cut here, and there is a lot of air here, so it lacks the true, denser texture.

Final Thoughts

Trader Joe's Panettone and Chocolate Gelato Frozen Style Dessert is a creative and festive idea. It brings the flavor of panettone into frozen dessert form with citrus peel, brandied fruit notes, and a generous chocolate swirl. It is sweet, seasonal, and interesting.

But it is not quite gelato and not quite ice cream. The texture leans light, and the flavor is fun, yet the whole experience feels like it could have been better if it committed fully to one style. If you love anything panettone, this is absolutely worth trying. If you want that ultra creamy gelato experience, you may walk away wanting more.
