While Trader Joe's seems to make an effort to embrace a lot of dietary needs, there seems to be one group who has been sorely left out of so many of the new products I've tried this year: the low-carb crowd. It seems like the vast majority of the items hitting shelves are sugar-laden.
Taste and review
However, Trader Joe's Soft Honey Nougat with Almonds takes that to a new level.
You see if you look at the ingredients there are quite a few sugars found here: glucose, sugar, honey, and powdered sugar.
And yes, I'm not unclear that this is a confectionary item, but I'm not sure it is one that we need.
There is no shortage of sweet goodies on Trader Joe's shelves. But this one is kinda blah.
When I reach for something sweet that will take 20 or so minutes to work off in the gym, I want it to taste good. And while this wasn't terrible, it didn't end up tasting like much other than the few almonds in each piece.
Trader Joe's has used honey flavor pretty effectively in their Dark Chocolate Honey Mints. The flavor was pronounced. And while it wasn't my favorite, it was a more natural sugar than what is present here.
I took one bit and was kinda bummed out. I've had marshmallows that are far more flavor-packed than these.
I was looking for the honey flavor, but it was super subtle. Perhaps the soft is a reference to the flavor and not to the texture.
The texture here is much like a piece of marshmallow fluff that is more structurally sound.
Overall
But my biggest problem here is that it just needed something: a chocolate coating or some salt. It needs something to cut through the raw sweetness presented here. The almonds were pretty much the only reprieve.
For $3.49 for about 8 pieces this is a bit pricey too. Between the price and the nondescript flavor of these, they get a thumbs down from me.
So, would I buy this again? No. This product just didn't do it for me.

As I mentioned before I'm not the biggest fan of sugary sweets but I like nougat so these tweaked my interest a little bit. But after reading your review not anymore. And I have never seen so many forms of sugar in one ingredient list-lol. I will definitely be taking a pass on these

Hey Dag! I'm holding out the holiday candy (ok, chocolate) which should be right around the corner! I totally can't wait. Thanks as always for taking the time to stop by and share!

I thought it was not too bad. I did attempt toasting it. Didn't make a difference. Almost like a smoky flavor. I should try do a smore instead of marshmallow using toasted nougat.

Hey Alek! Good idea for the smores. The nougat was a lot like marshmallows that I was expecting. Thanks so very much for always taking the time to stop by and share!

It’s been an epic past six months for low carb items- i.e. everything made from cauliflower, veg noodles, new meat and seafood options, squash based casseroles etc. Actually just read there will be a cauliflower stuffing in stores soon.
Nougat isn’t usually very flavorful, more about the texture and included nuts. My mom used to make a great version that had a good bit of vanilla in it. I have to pass because of my delicate dental work, but I’m looking forward to the seasonal chocolates

Hey Ttrockwood! I've been working on a Keto post for about 2 months now, so maybe that angle has skewed my view on things. I mean the jerky is 6 net carbs! Yikes. But yes, there have been some good low carb additions, just wish the snack aisle wouldn't be so sugary. Anyways, I'm with you, I'm totally saving my calories for all those seasonal chocolates that should be hitting shelves in the very near future. Thanks again for stopping by and sharing!

sorry to hear you were not as crazy about it as I am. this nougat is amazing. Soft and chewy and not too sweet. the perfect little sweetness. Unfortunately they have discounted the item : ((

Hey Nicole! Thanks for sharing. You can always reach out to Trader Joe's in hopes they will bring these back.

I think you lack knowledge of the European tradition of soft nougat (turron in Spain, torrone in Italy) and your analysis of the nutrition label and ingredients misses the mark. The only meaningful comparison is with the leading Italian brands. Trader Joe's has nearly identical ingredients, clearly of the same quality, costs less, and has less sugar. And they taste great. My workmates have been eating my Italian torrone at Christmastime for years, but when introduced to the TJs version they liked it a bit better.

I loved this stuff. Chocolate doesn’t agree with me, so I look for other choices. The flavor is sweet and maybe too subtle for you, but I would have ordered a few cases if I had known that it would now be discontinued. Can’t find anything as good anywhere. I wish Trader Joe would get it back.
