If you are a fan of Trader Joe's frozen desserts then you are not alone. There are so many good items to choose from. Now Trader Joe's is looking to be far more inclusive in some of their desserts because this vegan dessert is based on the popular Vanilla Ice Cream Bon Bons that this grocery chain has been on shelves for years.

So since Trader Joe's tested a vegan mint bon bon over the past holiday season they decided to make a far less seasonal flavor available.

The packaging

So these bon bons are like opening a little present. It starts with the basic box that we all expect from the frozen foods. But within the box is a gift-like plastic wrapper that conceals the plastic shell that protects these little domes of non-dairy ice cream and keeps the outer shell as round as possible without cracks.

Here is what it the product looks like outside the box:

Trader Joe's Vegan Cookies and Cream Bon Bons out of the box with the extra layer of packaging.
Is the pretty plastic really that necessary? If you are environmentally conscious perhaps not.

The taste

So how good can a dairy-free and plant-based option be? So starting from the outside the shell is very good. It is thin and crisp. Just the way you would hope for any well-made ice cream bar. The dark chocolate is a nice contrast to the filling.

For me, the non-dairy ice cream is where these had their downfall. This had the texture of real ice cream, but the taste was so muted. It didn't scream cookies in and cream. In fact, I was missing the cookie bottom that the regular bon bons have.

Heck, I was missing any semblance of a cookie. Mine was sorely lacking. If you had told me they were just plain I probably wouldn't have noticed.

It didn't taste much like vanilla either. There was a mild coconut flavor that came through but nothing that was overly assertive or concentrated.

Comparing two bon bons

So if vegan is a must, then you'll need to reach for these. Otherwise, how do these compare with Trader Joe's Vanilla Bon Bons?

Here is where they are similar:

  • Both are frozen bon bons
  • Both contain wheat so if you have an allergy these aren't gluten-free.
  • Both are solid choices as frozen desserts
  • Portion control is good on each dessert

Here is where they are different:

  • The regular ice cream bon bons are smaller but a dozen come in a package. The vegan option only contains six but they are larger in size overall.
  • The cookie bottom was a highlight for me on the regular variety
  • Neither one of these desserts will ever match the truly sublime nature of Trader Joe's Sublime Ice Cream Sandwiches which are still my top pick in the dessert aisle if you are looking for something ice cream based.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much do Trader Joe's Vegan Cookies and Cream Bon Bons cost?

These are priced at $3.99 and six come in a package.

Are they gluten-free?

The ingredients mention in this product contains wheat.

Are they nut-free?

The allergy information indicated it may contain traces of almonds.

Where can I buy these?

These are only available at Trader Joe's. They are located in the frozen dessert section.

Overall

For $3.99 these weren't bad. But they aren't a must-buy or must-try. There are a lot of new treats hitting shelves in the frozen aisle so there are plenty of other desserts that might be worth your attention.

However, if you feel limited because this is vegan, then these are perfectly fine desserts.

Would I buy this again? For me, Trader Joe's Vegan Cookies and Cream Bon Bons are a one-time purchase.

You can see there isn't much cookies in each bite. At most each bite was like little crumbs of cookie mixed in.

I’m a fan! I was disappointed this afternoon when I went to get more and they were out. I agree that there’s barely any of the cake part, but I still love them.
