Every fall, Trader Joe's reaches a point where seemingly nothing is safe from pumpkin spice.
Cookies? Obviously. Coffee? Expected. Pasta? We've been down that road.
Flan? Sure. Why not.
Trader Joe's Pumpkin Flan is a seasonal spin on the year-round Caramel Flan you'll find in the refrigerated aisle. A package is $3.49 and contains two individually portioned flans.
Since Trader Joe's regular Caramel Flan is actually pretty good for something premade and sitting in the refrigerator case, I went into this with reasonably high expectations.
Pumpkin plus creamy custard plus caramel sounded like it should work.
What I wasn't prepared for was just how much pumpkin spice was about to enter the conversation.
And then refuse to stop talking.

Review
I underestimated this dessert.
I looked at Pumpkin Flan and expected the familiar creamy custard and caramel flavors of the regular version, only with some pumpkin and warm fall spices added.
Instead, pumpkin spice basically kicked down the door.
The spice profile here is assertive. Actually, I'd go a little further.
It's overwhelming.
Rather than tasting creamy custard, pumpkin, caramel, and spice as separate but complementary flavors, the spice seems to dominate nearly everything else.
That's a problem because flan is normally a pretty delicate dessert.
Custard isn't exactly known for screaming for attention.
Caramel can bring some deeper sweetness and slight bitterness.
Pumpkin could have added earthy sweetness and richness.
Those elements had the potential to work beautifully together.
Instead, pumpkin spice grabbed the microphone and didn't give it back.
The first thing I noticed wasn't caramel. It wasn't creamy custard. It wasn't even pumpkin. It was pumpkin spice. And plenty of it.
The warm spice profile is substantially stronger than I expected and overwhelms some of the subtler flavors that should be part of the dessert.
If you're someone who waits all year for pumpkin spice season and thinks there's no such thing as too much cinnamon-and-spice flavor, you might enjoy this much more than I did.
Personally, I wanted balance.
A good seasonal variation should still remind me of the original product while bringing something new.
Here, I found myself searching for the caramel and custard underneath all that spice.
One of the things I enjoy about flan is the contrast between creamy custard and caramel.
Unfortunately, the caramel doesn't get much opportunity to shine here.
The pumpkin spice profile is so assertive that the caramel flavor gets pushed into the background.
And I don't think the texture of the caramel layer helped.
I found the top slightly more rubbery than I expected.
The regular Caramel Flan sets a reasonably good baseline for what Trader Joe's can do with a premade refrigerated flan, so I was disappointed that the seasonal version didn't seem to hit the same mark.
The caramel should have been one of the flavors balancing the pumpkin and spices.
Instead, it feels more like an afterthought.
What About the Pumpkin?
Here's where things get interesting.
Based purely on the name, I expected pumpkin to be a major part of the experience.
But what stood out to me much more clearly was pumpkin spice flavor.
The natural flavors in the ingredient list certainly seem to be doing some heavy lifting in creating that seasonal spice profile.
And that's ultimately my biggest issue.
I wanted pumpkin flan.
What I tasted felt closer to pumpkin spice flan.
Those are not necessarily the same thing.
Pumpkin itself can be mild, earthy, slightly sweet, and creamy.
Pumpkin spice can be loud.
This particular dessert chose loud.

How Does It Compare to Trader Joe's Caramel Flan?
I'd choose the regular Caramel Flan.
Pretty easily.
Trader Joe's year-round version isn't going to replace a beautifully made restaurant flan, but for a premade refrigerated dessert, it's pretty solid.
And that's exactly why I had higher hopes for the Pumpkin Flan.
The regular version allows the creamy custard and caramel to do their thing.
The Pumpkin Flan adds such an assertive spice profile that those flavors become harder to appreciate.
Sometimes adding more flavor doesn't actually make something more flavorful.
It just makes it louder.
That's what happened here.
At $3.49 for two individually portioned desserts, I don't think the price is unreasonable.
You're getting two convenient, ready-to-eat seasonal desserts for less than $2 each.
My issue isn't the value.
It's what else Trader Joe's sells during pumpkin season.
There are so many pumpkin products competing for your attention, money, and available stomach space that merely being okay isn't enough.
And that's where Trader Joe's Pumpkin Flan lands for me.
Okay.
Not terrible.
Not something I'd warn everyone to avoid.
But definitely not something I'm planning to stock up on before pumpkin season ends.
There are simply better pumpkin treats at Trader Joe's.

Serving Suggestions
Since these are already individual desserts, you don't really need to do anything to them.
But if you want to dress them up, there are a few possibilities.
- Whipped cream: Probably my first choice. The mild creaminess could help soften the aggressive spice profile.
- Vanilla ice cream: Another way to bring some cooling, creamy contrast.
- A little extra caramel sauce: If you're also wondering where the caramel went, we can solve the problem ourselves.
- Chopped pecans: A little crunch could add some welcome texture and works naturally with fall flavors.
- Fresh whipped cream and caramel: At this point, we've basically started repairing the dessert, but I'm okay with that.
I'd avoid adding additional cinnamon or pumpkin pie spice.
Trader Joe's has already taken care of that.
Enthusiastically.

FAQs about Trader Joe's Pumpkin Flan
The following are commonly asked questions about Trader Joe's Pumpkin Flan:
It's $3.49 for a package containing two individual flans.
Yes. Unlike the regular Caramel Flan, the Pumpkin Flan is a seasonal item.
There's certainly sweetness here, but the stronger impression for me was the amount of pumpkin spice rather than sweetness alone.

Final Thoughts
Trader Joe's Pumpkin Flan is a seasonal idea that I think sounded better on paper than it tasted in execution.
Pumpkin. Custard. Caramel. Warm spices.
There was plenty of potential here.
Unfortunately, somebody got a little too enthusiastic with the pumpkin spice.
The custard itself is okay, but the spice profile overwhelms the caramel and much of the delicacy I expect from flan. Add a slightly rubbery caramel layer, and the whole thing lands somewhere firmly in the middle.
Not bad. Not great. Just aggressively fall.
At $3.49 for two, trying it isn't a major financial commitment, particularly if you're a serious pumpkin spice fan.
But Trader Joe's gives us an absurd number of pumpkin products every fall.
You can't eat them all. Well, you can try.
But if I'm choosing where to spend my pumpkin-season calories, this one isn't making my starting lineup.
Sometimes pumpkin spice needs to remember it's a supporting character.
Trader Joe's Pumpkin Flan handed it the lead role.
