Stew Leonards Seafood Pot Pie

The pros:  Stew Leonard’s Seafood Pot Pie has a super flaky pie crust, delicious and rich filling that doesn’t skimp on the seafood.

The cons:  No nutritional values (I probably don’t want to really know. Anything that tastes this good, I’m strangely ok with not looking how not good it might be for me) or how to prepare/reheat. I really wanted to make sure I didn’t microwave this, nor did I want to burn this. I had it in the oven for 20 minutes and still hit cold middle. Cold delicious middle.

Betty Crab Cake Recipe

I love crab cakes. They are expensive whether you buy them at the store or order them out. This is not your traditional Maryland style crab cake recipe. This is a very savory rendition that will allow you to add much flavor to canned crab, crab in the freezer case, or in the refrigerated case. I tend to use a lot of Penzey’s Spices. If you don’t have a location near you they take orders online. Their stuff is high quality and their stores are awesome. You can actually go into the store and sniff each and every spice they have. It’s also worth it to be on their mailing list. If you aren’t using Penzey’s, then by all means substitute what you can. I’ve included fresh and dry measurements so depending on what you have available so you can switch things out….

Trader Joe’s Canned Crab Meat

Trader Joe's Crab Meat

The pros:  Trader Joe’s Canned Crab Meat is the cheapest crab meat around. You’ll have to find the right medium for this product. I doubt it would be any good in a crab dip or crab or seafood salad. You can get away with this in a crab cake, but not a Maryland style crab cake where the crab is the star. If you can afford it, splurge for the new product in the freezer aisle Wild Caught Crab.

The cons:  Lacks the appearance of lump crab. It looks like they cleaned out the machine, packaged it in water, threw some bigger chunks on top so hopefully you won’t notice the shavings of what’s left. Crab is not from the US. Slight metallic taste even though it has a paper wrapping in the can.

Trader Joe's Wild Caught Crab Meat

The pros:  The taste of Trader Joe’s Wild Caught Crab Meat will remind you of the ocean. There is a distinct saltiness that hits you first followed by the soft and sweet flavor of crab. It will take a little breaking up the meat by hand to make it not look so unattractive coming out of the vacuum sealed bag.

The cons:  Crab meat not from the US, keep an eye on possible shells. A little grey coming out of the package which visually made me a bit uneasy, but its pre-cooked so you can eat it once the package is defrosted.
