It's been a while since Trader Joe's added anything to the dips and hummus options. They've taken away items, but not too much has been added back. Well, consider this a vegetarian (at least based on the ingredients) spin on the familiar 7 layer dip. Trader Joe's 5 Layer Dip is new, delicious, and just needs something to dip it in or scoop it on.
Taste and review
For the most part, much of this dip is pretty basic. You have a bunch of mostly familiar elements.
But they were made for this product specifically. The Pico De Gallo is much chunkier than the refrigerated pico available. And it doesn't have much in the way of heat.
The 4 cheese blend is also different compared to its refrigerated counterpart as well. It is finely shredded as opposed to the thicker shreds in the bagged variety.
As for the guacamole and sour cream I couldn't compare it to anything on the shelf as sour cream for the most part just tastes like sour cream. The guacamole was pretty smooth.
Regardless, the hummus is a delicious and unexpected compliment to the sour cream, cheese, pico, and guacamole. It tastes far more like black beans than hummus. And almost reminded me of a layer of refried beans with the texture of hummus.
For $4.99 it isn't too badly priced.
As an added bonus this is more than just a dip. Remember that no so great Taco Kit I reviewed recently? Well, this would make a far better topping for tacos, burritos, or homemade nachos than that kit ever could.
There is just one problem with this kit. If you like spice, just understand that in this plastic tub there is pretty much none to be found. Not even a little bit.
So bring your own delicious spicy add-on to this if you are a spice junkie.
And there might be a second problem too. Most 7-layer dips look so presentable and pretty. This looked like the morning after a party when someone walked in at 6 am. The ingredients were unevenly distributed and it wasn't very presentable. But it tasted darn good.
Overall
Would I buy this again? Yes, I would buy Trader Joe's 5 Layer Dip again. I can't wait to use it in ways other than scooping it out with those new Elote Corn Chip Dippers.

I think elote chips are a good pairing with the dip. Spicy chips would work good with this.
