An unopened tin of Trader Joe's Mint Watermelon Flavored Black Tea package on a pink background

For the first time, after a long harsh northeast winter, I've been able to keep my windows open for more than a few hours. It's like mother nature finally got a handle on her emotions. Today, I finally tucked away my winter coat and started thinking about warmer weather.

My mind was wandering towards thoughts of summer vacation, mojitos, bbqs, and having time off. At least two flavors of that list are represented in this product.

Now, when I think of summer I think of iced tea. I'm right now completely wanting and needing hot tea to, well, keep me warm. So over it this year. I want a cool drink.

Mojitos and margaritas are my thing over summer months. Mojitos probably a bit more. I love the flavor of mint. I just wasn't sure when I bought this that it would work.

It does in a way.

When drinking this beverage hot, it tasted like a mint tea. The watermelon was very muted, if not lost next to its more assertive herbal flavor. This isn't a pure fruit based tea either. The watermelon is the last ingredient. I saw licorice on the ingredient list. Thankfully, it is not as present as the taste of the black tea or mint.

Now, drinking this cooled to room temperature, this is a very different tea. I think it almost asks to be sweetened. With just a touch of sugar or simple syrup, you'll get the full flavor of the watermelon. It was light, refreshing, and almost a strange pairing.

But somehow, it worked. Now, I don't feel like everyone is going to love this product. If you don't care for mint tea, then steer clear of this one.

For $4.99 this is priced in line with all of the other teas in tins like Cherries and Berries among others. There is a bit of a premium for the teas in the nicer packages, but seems like a nice seasonal flavor that captures warmer weather. I liked it, but I liked it a lot more cold and with just a bit of sweetness to it.

However, be warned this is a seasonal offering. You can pick this up seasonally at Trader Joe's or through third party sellers on Amazon.com

Would I buy this again? Yes, I would buy Trader Joe's Mint Watermelon Flavored Black Tea again. It will take me a bit of time to go through 20 tea bags, but this is absolutely a pleasant flavor pairing that reminded me of the warmer days ahead.

I’m not much of a tea drinker, but I’d try this just to get the tin!

The tin is very cute but smaller than previous ones I've had. Do you use them for tea or repurpose them?

I keep my multi-year old teabags in a Lock and Lock container that hasn’t been opened in probably three years! I have special expensive tea tins from Teavanna that we bought about seven years ago - they are empty. Neither of us often drinks tea. Clearly having tea makes no sense for us.

But I have a “thing” for containers. I’d probably put something else in it, but I have no clue what. More than likely, it would sit empty for years, but I would admire it every time I looked at it.

I have a little metal, tiny pull-out drawer thingy that my grandmother kept postage stamps in that I can remember playing with when I was in first grade. I’m 75 now; does that tell you how crazy I am, truly???

Judie- Not one bit! As a 36 year old middle school teacher in the Bronx I reuse everything. I mean everything. There is nothing above me trying to find another way to use it. And yes, these tins make for great storage containers. Our society is so disposable about everything, it's nice to hear that you appreciate the nice tins. Thanks for sharing!

It would be good that way. It might also be good as a John Daly with the addition of alcohol. I'll have to do some experimenting.

We drink a lot of tea and this sounds amazing. Have you had chamomile honey tea? So good. Not too sweet.

Oh I definitely want to try this as an iced tea. I would probably concentrate it a bit to get more flavor. Add some ice cubes, a sprig of mint and possibly either fresh or frozen watermelon cubes to it.

It's really refreshing if you can find it. Some stores don't have it yet. I'd love to hear what you think when you do try it!

Sadly I doubt I ever get to try it as I don't live in the US and we don't have Trader Joe's in Estonia 🙁

FYI- I was just in Trader Joe's last night (and emailed them today) and they have discontinued the Mint Watermelon Black Tea 🙁 If you want (a chance) to see it come back be sure to drop them a line on their website... I have seen them bring items back sometimes if enough people contact them, and they are able to. I too greatly enjoyed this tea! I'm so sad I only bought 1 container.
