The pros:  Trader Joe's Pumpkin Spice Scone Mix makes quick, easy, tender, and flavorful scones that are perfect for the Fall.

The cons:  It's seasonal, so if you discover you really like this then you really should stock up because you don't know when or if you'll ever see this one again.

The verdict:  Homemade scones are the best. The ones from Trader Joe's are a close second. I've tried all their scone mixes and it was just a matter of flavor preference. They only require you to add water. These are no different. Even the icing just requires water. Inside the box are two bags: one for the scones, the other for the icing. Both flavors compliment each other well.

The batter this makes is quite thick, so absolutely follow the suggestion on the box about mixing this with a fork. I have a scoop that I used and managed to get 11 scones from this mix. The directions were perfect in terms of timing in the oven. Once cooled, feel free to add as much or as little icing as you'd like. The maple is such a good balance for the pumpkin spice here.

In terms of texture, these were almost cake like. If you aren't going to serve these (or in my case eat ALL 11 of them) in one sitting then make sure that you put them in an air tight container for storage. These will not get better with age. The amount of pumpkin was on the lighter side of things. It was not very assertive in terms of pumpkin flavor, but the spice mixture came right through. Not being assertive in pumpkin is sometimes perfectly acceptable. Especially here where there is a maple icing.

The maple icing was a really nice contrast between the flavors of the scone and with a touch of maple flavor. If you really wanted to up the maple flavor, then use a bit of maple syrup in place of the water. Just add any liquid in no more than drop sized increments. I found that my icing needed additional water in order to have enough hydration to be considered icing.

For $3.69 this was a really well done pumpkin spice that won't overwhelm you with pumpkin flavor. It's present but you'll still want to reach for more. I'm looking forward to eating the rest of the scones. It's worth a try if you do actually appreciate the taste of pumpkin. However, don't expect it to be like eating a pumpkin pie.

I have used this mix for the last couple of years. I add 6 oz (1/2 pkg.) of white chocolate chips and a hand full of dried cranberries, they add another texture to this fall treat.
