Most of the new products hitting shelves this week aren't of the healthy nature: there are new almond butter cups, candy coated peanuts, and this Blushing Apple Tart. So snacks and dessert items seem to be the order of the day. Trader Joe's Blushing Apple Tart is the new addition in the freezer aisle.

Taste and review
Now, I love a good dessert. And I've tried quite a few tarts and tartes over the last couple of years. Some are better than others.
As an added bonus, this was a good excuse to turn the oven on as here in NY the temperatures are set to plunge. Any added heat is always welcome this time of year.
The standout quality here is those bright pink apple slices. Even though this tart spent a good amount of time being frozen and about 45 minutes in the oven, those apples still kept their color.
Not only did they keep their color, they also did a great job of keeping their texture.
But the other standout item here is the almond creme filling. Being that the ingredients list almond, butter, sugar, and eggs, this is essentially frangipane.
Frangipane is lighter and fluffier than marzipan, which is a confection more people might be familiar with. But the frangipane here is a very fine layer. It's enough to balance out the tart nature of the apples.
If you are tasting something sweet it is absolutely the almond creme here.
The pastry here is pretty standard for Trader Joe's desserts. It has layers but doesn't puff up too much when baked. It's crisp around the edges and less so where the topping touches.
A day or two later, it was sufficiently firm to be picked up by a fork.
But as an added bonus, this does end up looking like the picture on the box, which is always a good thing in my mind.
This is listed as three servings although I think you can push it to four given its shape.
Overall
For $4.99 for three servings it's a pretty good deal. It's far cheaper than anything you can buy at a bakery. Best of all it would make for an impressive looking last-minute dessert.
Would I buy this again? Yes, Trader Joe's Blushing Apple Tart is tasty, affordable, and well done for something that comes out of a freezer box.

This sounds delicious! I have some maple vanilla whipped cream in a can from Whole Foods that would be delicious on top of this.

Hey Dag! That would pair so very well with this. Even vanilla ice cream with this tart while it is still warm would be phenomenal! Thanks again for sharing. Can't wait to hear your thoughts if you try this.

I applaud the creativity here. I mean almond filling?! Sign me up. Although they could had done with raspberries since it pairs perfectly. Also the color is pretty. Nice twist on apple pie/tarts

Hey Alek! I absolutely agree. But yes, the color is quite impressive considering it is a freezer item. Worth a try if you get around to it. Thanks again for stopping by!

I found this at TJs on 1/18 and immediately put into my cart. The checker said it was brand new. As soon as I got home I prepared it as directed and, my oh my, it was an instant hit. Just sweet enough. Cut into fourths and each piece was just enough to satisfy. I will definitely buy again.

Hey Linda! I found it pretty much the same time you did. The package totally caught my eye. It was a hit in my household and yes, I totally cut it into fourths, it just made more sense. Thanks for taking the time to stop by and share your thoughts!
Cathie says
This sounds wonderful! Any idea what variety of apples has color like this? I’ve never seen these before.
becomebetty says
Hey Cathie! I haven't seen apples like this either. I looked into it further and there are a few varieties it could be, so I can't give you an exact answer at this time. It didn't mention the variety on the box either.

FYI apple question: The only two red-fleshed apples I can think of are a Red Blush Apple and also a Kissabel Apple. Hope this helps.

"Blushing Apple Tart"....absolutely terrible...Pastry was tough, juices ran out of the tart making it dry.
Apple favour was nothing special. Cooked as per instructions, so that wasn't the fault. Would never buy again!!!

Hey John! I'm not sure if this has anything to do with it, but this item was discontinued about a year ago. Bummer you didn't care for it.
