A box of bubble waffles sitting on a table.

Trader Joe's Bubble Waffles are back for the summer and bring a little Hong Kong street food flair to your freezer aisle. Also known as gai daan zai, these vegan waffles are a twist on the classic egg waffle, offering a crispy outer shell and soft, chewy mochi-like bubbles. Each box contains four individually portioned waffles that crisp up beautifully in the toaster oven or air fryer.

Review

There's something undeniably fun about Trader Joe's Bubble Waffles. Straight out of the box, they don't look like much-just flat, frozen rounds-but once you pop one in the toaster oven or air fryer, the transformation is quick and satisfying. The edges get crispy, the bubbles puff just slightly, and the scent of toasted coconut starts to fill the kitchen. These aren't your average freezer waffles.

Texture-wise, this is where they shine. The bubbles offer that signature mochi chew, which gives each bite a little stretch and bounce. The surrounding edges stay crisp, so you get a combo of crunch and chew in every piece. It's a more interactive eating experience than you'd expect from something you just toasted.

Flavor-wise, the sweetness is mild and the coconut notes are noticeable but not overpowering. If you've ever eaten a sugar cone and thought, "I wish this was softer and chewier," then this might be right up your alley. On their own, they're pleasant, but not particularly memorable. This isn't a waffle that stands alone as a decadent dessert-it's more of a blank slate waiting for your creativity.

That said, these bubble waffles are made to be played with. I topped one with vanilla ice cream and a drizzle of caramel and was immediately reminded of a street food-style dessert. Another time, I smeared on some whipped cream and berries, and it gave brunch-vibes in the best way. The mochi texture held up surprisingly well to toppings, but they do start to harden within minutes of cooling, so don't wait too long to dig in.

While I loved the novelty and the texture, I wouldn't call this a filling snack. The waffles are fairly small, and with only four in a package, they'll disappear quickly-especially if you're sharing. Still, for a vegan, freezer-friendly dessert that leans more playful than indulgent, I'd say it earns a spot in the summer rotation.

What Is Gai Daan Jai?
Originating in Hong Kong, gai daan jai translates to "little chicken egg" due to the shape. They're popular as street snacks, often served plain or with fun fillings. Trader Joe's version is more of a frozen hack on the traditional snack, but the spirit is still there-crispy edges, chewy bubbles, and endless topping potential.

Final Thoughts

Trader Joe's Bubble Waffles are one of those fun, slightly offbeat items that make seasonal shopping at TJ's exciting. They're quick to prep, tasty, and adaptable for dessert or a sweet brunch. If you love mochi, coconut, or just enjoy trying something new, these are worth tossing in your cart. Just be warned, they're best eaten fresh and hot.
