An unopened bag of Trader Joe's Mini French Baguettes

Few things beat the smell of freshly baked bread, especially the kind that comes out of your oven with minimal effort. Trader Joe's Mini French Baguettes promise exactly that, a warm and cozy carb moment without the fuss of kneading, rising, or praying your yeast cooperates. They are small, convenient, and ready in minutes, which makes them one of those freezer items that always feel like a good backup plan.

Review

Trader Joe's Mini French Baguettes come in a box of six and bake directly from frozen. There is no thawing and no overnight rise. Just straight into the oven and about four to six minutes later you have warm, lightly crisp bread that smells like you worked much harder than you actually did.

The truth is, these look more like breadsticks than traditional baguettes. They are short and narrow, not long and slender. Once baked, they stay on the pale side even after you hit the recommended cooking time. They also turn out lighter in color than the photo on the box suggests. That does not mean they lack flavor, but if you expect a deep golden crust you may want to leave them in the oven for an extra couple of minutes.

Texture wise, these lean soft rather than crusty. The exterior has a gentle crunch, but it is not the shattering crust you get from a true French bakery loaf. The inside is fluffy and tender with a nice chew. They taste freshly baked, and the aroma that comes off the tray is enough to get people wandering into the kitchen asking when dinner is ready.

Flavor wise, they are mild, clean tasting, and very versatile. They pair beautifully with salted butter, and if you want to elevate the experience then the New Zealand Grass Fed Butter or the French Cultured Butter from Trader Joe's takes them into full treat territory. They also make an excellent sponge for pasta sauce, soup, stew, or anything you want to sop up from the plate.

If these are sold out, the closest comparison is the Parbaked Ficelles in the fresh bread aisle. Those are larger, more traditionally baguette forward, and also freeze well. If you want more crust, the ficelles are the better choice. If you want a quick personal sized breadstick style option, the Mini French Baguettes do the job.

These disappeared from my sheet pan faster than I could take photos which, honestly, is probably the best review any bread product can get.

FAQs about Trader Joe's Mini French Baguettes

The following are commonly asked questions about this product:

What do Trader Joe's Mini French Baguettes taste like?

They have a mild flavor, a soft interior, and a light crisp exterior.

Do they need to thaw?

No. You bake them directly from frozen.

Can I bake them longer for more crust?

Yes. A couple of extra minutes helps develop a better golden finish.

Final Thoughts

Trader Joe's Mini French Baguettes are not going to replace an artisan loaf from a local bakery, but they are a dependable freezer staple that delivers warm, tasty bread in minutes. They bake quickly, pair with almost anything, and make even a simple meal feel a little more special. They lean more breadstick than baguette, but they are still a solid option for people who want the freshly baked experience without committing to making bread at home.

For $4.49, they are an easy yes and something I would buy again, even if I still gravitate toward the parbaked ficelles when I want a more traditional French loaf experience.

I love these! But seems it's sold out! Hope it comes back. The pairing with the NZ Cultured butter is divine.

I wonder if I could air fry them instead of heating the oven up just to bake one or two of them?

I actually don't see why that wouldn't work. If you try it, I'd love to hear how it works for you!

I found it necessary to cook them a bit longer. I think around 8-10 minutes or so. Also, as tempting as it is to eat it hot from the oven, the middle was a bit gummy fresh from the oven and did much better when I allowed it to cool for at least 20-30 minutes first. I did manage to make a mini sandwich out of these and successfully used them for garlic bread, but that involved taking them out of the oven after 5 minutes, slicing them in half, spreading garlic butter all over, then baking again for another 5 minutes or so.
Overall I don't think I would buy these again. I loved the idea, just not the execution. The croissants are FANTASTIC and even if I had to leave these out on the counter overnight to rise and have a nice, hot, fresh baguette in the morning, it would be worth it. On the bright side, I can make a pretty awesome no knead baguette (you still need to fold/shape the baguette normally), and I have no shortage of bakeries nearby selling baguettes. Those would be better options for me at this point instead of getting this product again.

I tried airfrying these. 400 degrees for 7 minutes so good! Perfectly golden all over. No flipping at all.

I tried baking at 400 for 10 min. with no crisping or browning. I did it again at 450 for 10 min and they came out brown, crispy with a nice soft center. I made a very nice small salami and butter sandwich much like I had had in France years ago.
