Butter. So many choices. But this is new from Trader Joe's. If you are wondering or confused, no this does not replace the cultured salted butter from France. It is located right next to it.

Taste

Which begs the question? So what's the difference between Trader Joe's New Zealand Salted Butter and the other butter options?

First, there is the matter of size. This butter is sold in an 8-ounce block whereas the cultured butter is sold in an 8.8-ounce block. So yes, Trader Joe's New Zealand Salted Butter is slightly smaller in size. The size difference looks much bigger than it actually is due to the size of the block of butter.

Next, there is the matter of taste. If you think butter is butter, then I'd say you are missing out. There is something special about grass-fed butter. Don't believe me, then try brands like Kerrygold. Yes, the price is a bit more premium, but so is the product.

And compared to those regular sticks of commercial butter the grass-fed is a step ahead. It is richer in taste and in color. There is even a better mouthfeel. For purposes of baking or just eating on some warm bread, I'd reach for the grass-fed every time. The end results always seem superior.

So if I had to make a comparison then this product is pretty close to Kerrygold.

If you want the comparison between this product and the cultured butter already at Trader Joe's, then just know this product is slightly more yellow in color. It is rich in taste and does not have the cultured taste that the French butter does.

The same problems do remain: yes this is a premium product with a more premium price tag and the package isn't good about letting you know where the tablespoon measuring marks are. Most American bakers just aren't going to put out a food scale.

Overall

For $3.29 for 8 ounces it is worth a try.

Would I buy Trader Joe's New Zealand Salted Butter again? Yes, I would buy this again. It is up there with the cultured butter. It's truly an excellent product.

How does this compare to Kerrygold? That's the BEST!!! Also, butter on the finish-at-home breads right out of the oven is HEAVEN.

Kerrygold I think has the edge, but depending on where you shop this is pretty comparable.
