Trader Joe's Trio of Flavored Honey Review: Buzz Worthy or Buzz Kill

An unopened package of A trio of flavored honey.

Trader Joe's A Trio of Flavored Honey is a new spin on a concept longtime shoppers might remember. Years ago, there was the Rainbow of Honey set, a collection of tiny jars featuring different floral varieties. It was adorable, giftable, and genuinely fun to taste side by side. This new trio takes a different approach. Instead of showcasing different floral sources, it focuses on three flavored honeys: ginger, lemon, and lavender.

Same idea of a set, very different execution.

Review

Each box contains three eight ounce jars of honey flavored with:

  • Ginger
  • Lemon
  • Lavender

At ten ninety nine, the price is reasonable for the amount of honey you get, especially since flavored honeys tend to be more expensive. The jars are cute, well-sized, and easy to gift.

Let us start with the good news. The lemon and ginger honeys are pleasant and straightforward. Both flavors blend naturally with honey and feel like the kind of thing you reach for when you are under the weather or want something soothing in your tea. They are comforting flavors and work well for everyday use.

The lavender is where things got less exciting for me. Lavender can be a tricky flavor. When used sparingly, it is floral and calming. When used a little too boldly, it starts leaning into perfume territory. In this case, the lavender honey reminded me of dryer sheets. Not terrible, but not something I would willingly spoon onto toast or drizzle over yogurt. It felt more like a novelty flavor than a pantry staple.

Compared to the now discontinued Rainbow of Honey set, this trio is less interesting. The old set offered a true tasting experience of different varietal honeys. This new version focuses on flavored honeys, which feel more like specialty add ons than a collection you explore.

That said, three full sized jars for ten ninety nine is a good value. If you enjoy lemon or ginger honey in tea, or want something soothing for sick days, the set might still be worth picking up.

Nutritional information for Trader Joe's Trio of Honey.

Pairing Suggestions for Each Honey Flavor

Lemon Honey Pairings

  • Great in tea- Especially soothing for cold weather or sick days. Lemon honey melts beautifully into hot water and brings a bright citrus note that standard honey cannot.
  • Drizzle over berries- Strawberries, blueberries, and raspberries all pop with a little lemon infused sweetness.
  • Use on pastries- Warm biscuits, scones, or even a slice of pound cake become instantly more interesting with a spoonful of lemon honey.
  • Brighten yogurt or oatmeal- It adds a citrus lift without needing actual lemon zest.
  • Pair with goat cheese- This is a perfect sweet tangy combo for cheese boards.
  • Whisk into salad dressing- Lemon honey works well in a simple vinaigrette with olive oil and vinegar.

Ginger Honey Pairings

  • Tea and warm drinks- Ginger honey is made to be stirred into tea. It adds warmth and spice that is soothing, especially if you are not feeling your best.
  • Glaze for chicken or salmon- Mix with soy sauce or citrus juice for a quick, flavorful marinade.
  • Serve with roasted carrots or sweet potatoes- The ginger adds heat and depth to naturally sweet vegetables.
  • Top Greek yogurt- Ginger honey gives yogurt that warm sweet contrast that feels almost dessert like.
  • Use on toast with butter- Simple but so satisfying, especially if you enjoy ginger.
  • Stir into hot toddies- Ginger and honey already belong together. This just makes it easier.

Lavender Honey Pairings

Lavender honey is the trickiest because of the floral intensity, but here are the best uses if you enjoy it or want to tone it down.

  • Drizzle over vanilla ice cream- The floral notes mellow when paired with creamy flavors and become more dessert like.
  • Pair with mild cheeses- Brie and triple cream cheeses can balance lavender's perfumed edge.
  • Use in baking- A small amount can be folded into scone or shortbread dough where the lavender becomes more subtle.
  • Sweeten lemonade- The floral notes work surprisingly well with citrus and soften in a drink.
  • Add to whipped cream- A tiny amount turns whipped cream into a floral topping that feels more gourmet.
  • Use in lavender lattes- If you enjoy floral coffeehouse drinks, this works well as a finishing drizzle.

FAQs about Trader Joe's Trio of Flavored Honey

Below is a list of frequently asked questions about this product:

Is this similar to the Rainbow of Honey set?

No. That set showcased floral varietal honeys. This one focuses on flavored honeys.

Which flavor is the best?

Ginger and lemon were the most enjoyable and versatile.

Is this set a good deal?

Yes. Three eight ounce jars for ten ninety nine is a solid value.

Final Thoughts

Trader Joe's A Trio of Flavored Honey is a decent value and a thoughtful idea, but it does not reach the charm or variety of the old Rainbow of Honey set. The ginger and lemon honeys are enjoyable and useful, especially for tea drinkers. The lavender, however, leans too perfumed for my taste and was not something I would reach for again.

If you love flavored honey or want something soothing for winter tea season, this could still be a worthwhile pickup. For everyone else, it is a nice idea but not an essential Trader Joe's find.

Seasonal, Trader Joe's Trader Joes, Trader Joes Review

Trader Joe's Kouign Amann Review: Pastry Royalty

An unopened box of Trader Joe's Kouign Amann.

Trader Joe's Kouign Amann is one of those freezer finds that feels almost too good to be true. A laminated, caramelized pastry that you thaw overnight, bake in the morning, and pretend you bought from a fancy bakery. If you know what a traditional kouign amann is supposed to taste like, you go into this with pretty high expectations.

And shockingly, it delivers. Almost exactly. Just in a seasonal way.

[feast_advanced_jump_to]

Review

Sold frozen in the bakery freezer section, Trader Joe's Kouign Amann requires an overnight thaw and rise in its baking paper, of course. Once baked, you get individual pastries with visible layers, caramelized sugar edges, and a buttery, golden brown exterior. They look professional without any effort on your part, aside from remembering to take them out the night before.

The real test of a kouign amann is not how it looks when you take it out of the box, but what happens in the oven. Trader Joe's version rises beautifully, bakes evenly, and shows off those laminated layers once you break into it.

The exterior becomes deeply caramelized with crisp, shattering edges that taste like butter and sugar fused into toffee. Inside, the pastry is tender and layered, richer than a croissant but never dense. It has that perfect chew that makes a kouign amann feel indulgent without being heavy.

The buttery flavor is front and center. Every bite tastes rich and balanced without being greasy. The sweetness is exactly what you want, caramel forward rather than sugary. As for salt, this version does not have a pronounced salty hit, but the overall balance is still very well done. You do not feel like anything is missing, even if it leans slightly sweeter than some bakery versions.

What impressed me most was how close this frozen version came to a fresh bakery kouign amann. The technique, texture, and caramelization are there. This is the kind of item people will assume you bought from a patisserie if you serve it warm.

In short, this is one of the standout items in Trader Joe's freezer section.

My greatest disappointment is that this is not only seasonal, but has been sold in the past, but disappeared for a lengthy time. To me is a stock-up worthy item.

These even reheat well after baking. Pop in the microwave for 10-15 seconds to gently warm or in the oven to heat through.

How to Serve

  • Eat warm straight from the oven for peak caramelization
  • Dust with powdered sugar
  • Serve with berries or a small scoop of vanilla ice cream
  • Pair with coffee or tea for an easy breakfast treat
  • Split and fill with whipped mascarpone for a brunch upgrade

FAQs about Trader Joe's Kouign Amann

Below is a list of frequently asked questions about this product:

Do you have to thaw these overnight?

Yes, the rise happens during the thaw.

Are they very sweet?

They are caramel sweet, not sugar bomb sweet.

Would you buy them again?

Absolutely. They are one of Trader Joe's best pastries.

Final Thoughts

Trader Joe's Kouign Amann is one of the rare freezer pastries that truly earns a spot in your cart. It bakes up beautifully with caramelized edges, buttery layers, and an overall flavor that rivals a bakery version. While it could benefit from a slightly stronger salty note, the pastry is balanced, indulgent, and genuinely delicious.

If you love laminated pastries, caramelized edges, or any excuse to make your kitchen smell like a French bakery, this is a must try.

Dessert, Frozen, Seasonal, Trader Joe's Trader Joes, Trader Joes Review

Trader Joe's Truffle Risotto Review: Mildly Truffled Mostly Fine

An unopened bag of Trader Joe's Truffle Risotto on a pink surface.

Trader Joe's Truffle Risotto is one of the newest frozen items to hit shelves this season, and anything with the word truffle in the name tends to grab attention quickly. Risotto can be a labor of love, so the idea of a heat and eat version with truffle already built in sounds like a gift to busy weeknights.

It delivers on the convenience, and the flavors are there, but it is not quite the knockout truffle moment I was hoping for.

An unopened bag of Trader Joe's Truffle Risotto on a pink surface.
[feast_advanced_jump_to]

Review

Trader Joe's Truffle Risotto comes frozen in a bag, fully seasoned, and ready to cook on the stovetop or the microwave. The instructions are straightforward and surprisingly accurate. Once heated, it becomes a creamy risotto-style dish with visible grains of rice and a built-in truffle flavor.

The first win here is the cooking directions. Trader Joe's nailed the timing. The risotto thickens exactly when the package says it will, and the texture ends up creamy without turning into mush. The rice still has a nice bite to it, which is something not all frozen risottos pull off.

The truffle flavor is present, noticeable, and pleasant. It is not overpowering, but it is definitely there. If you enjoy truffles in moderation, this will feel well-balanced. If you are a truffle maximalist, you might wish they had gone bolder. If you need a pop, also look for the Truffle Oil Duo.

Where this product loses a little steam is in the overall impact. It is good. It is edible. It is easy. But Trader Joe's has released truffle items in the past that were far more memorable like the mac and cheese and the gnocchi. This one lands safely in the middle. Nothing wrong with it at all, but nothing that made me sit up and think I needed to stock my freezer either.

This is one of those items that checks every box but still did not become a favorite. Would I eat it again? Absolutely. Would I reach for it over some of their other seasonal truffle products? Probably not.

Nutritional information and ingredients in Trader Joe's Truffle Risotto.

How to Serve

  • Add sautéed mushrooms for more depth
  • Stir in parmesan for extra richness
  • Top with grilled chicken for an easy dinner
  • Serve with roasted asparagus or green beans
  • Add a drizzle of truffle oil if you want a stronger flavor

FAQs about Trader Joe's Truffle Risotto

Below is a list of frequently asked questions about this product

Does it taste strongly of truffle?

The truffle flavor is present but not intense.

Does the rice stay firm?

Yes, it has a good bite and does not turn mushy.

Is this the best truffle item at Trader Joe's?

No, they have released stronger truffle products in the past.

Trader Joe's Truffle Risotto fully cooked in a bowl next to the original bag on a pink surface.

Final Thoughts

Trader Joe's Truffle Risotto is a well executed freezer meal with reliable cooking directions and a pleasant truffle flavor. The rice keeps a good bite and the dish comes together easily. It is a perfectly good item to keep on hand for nights when you want something comforting without much effort.

But as far as Trader Joe's truffle offerings go, this one is good but not great. It is the kind of item you enjoy but do not rave about. Worth trying once, but not something I feel compelled to stockpile.

Frozen, Seasonal, Trader Joe's Trader Joes, Trader Joes Review

Trader Joe's Panettone and Chocolate Gelato Style Frozen Dessert Review

An unopened package of Trader Joe's Panettone and Chocolate Gelato on a pink surface.

Trader Joe's Panettone and Chocolate Gelato Frozen Style Dessert is one of those holiday surprises that instantly sounds festive. You see panettone, chocolate, fruit, citrus peel, and something that sounds very close to gelato and you think this might be the sleeper hit of the season. Then you read the label a little more closely and realize it is not actually gelato. It is gelato frozen style dessert, which is the food version of saying trust me bro. And the texture is more Cool-Whip than full blown ice cream.

Still, with a new for 2025 label and a price of four forty nine per pint, I was curious. Panettone in frozen form is not something you see often. And flavor wise, there is a lot happening here.

The top of the container of Trader Joe's Panettone and Chocolate Gelato on a pink surface.
[feast_advanced_jump_to]

Review

Trader Joe's Panettone and Chocolate Gelato Frozen Style Dessert is a frozen dessert meant to mimic the texture of gelato. It comes in a pint sized container with a dramatic chocolate swirl right at the top. Inside you will find tiny pieces of panettone mixed throughout along with citrus peel and brandied fruit flavoring.

The dessert is lightly textured, creamy, and sweet with flavors meant to echo traditional Italian holiday panettone.

The first thing you taste is how light this dessert is. It has the airy feel of gelato without the dense rich mouthfeel you usually get from a true Italian style version. It is buttery in flavor but not heavy in texture. There is even a caramel like note that rounds it out in a very pleasant way.

Once you dig in a little deeper, you start hitting the teeny tiny cubes of panettone. They add some interest but do not bring a ton of chew. The citrus peel (flavor not texture) and brandied fruit flavor come through immediately. This dessert does not hide its panettone inspiration at all. It tastes like it has the elements just misses on the dairy dessert part.

Up top you get a huge swirl of chocolate. It looks dramatic and scoops up beautifully, but it does make you wish the entire pint had that intensity running through it. Once you move past that first layer, the chocolate becomes more of a background note.

Overall, Trader Joe's Panettone and Chocolate Gelato Frozen Style Dessert is not bad. It is sweet, festive, and fun to try at least once. But the labeling and texture do feel like a corner cut. You can tell this is not true gelato and not a premium ice cream either. It sits in a middle space there like Cool Whip which is just too airy to pretend to be a dessert and not a topping.

The flavor captures panettone nicely and the citrus is bright without being sharp. If you enjoy holiday baked goods turned into frozen desserts, this is worth a try. If you wanted full bodied gelato or a creamier premium ice cream, you'll be better off reaching for the actual dessert from the shelves.

I wanted to like this, but as I looked through my freezer I wasn't drawn to it. Some desserts are straight up addicting, but this wasn't one of them. It's a one and done in my book. Cool idea, but execution needs to step up.

Nutritional facts and ingredients in Trader Joe's Panettone and Chocolate Gelato.

How to Serve

  • Scoop into small bowls and top with extra chocolate sauce
  • Pair with biscotti or butter cookies
  • Serve with a slice of actual panettone for a double dessert moment
  • Add to an affogato style treat with a shot of espresso
  • Use as a base for a holiday ice cream sundae

FAQs about Trader Joe's Panettone and Chocolate Gelato Style Frozen Dessert

Below is a list of frequently asked questions about this product:

What does the flavor taste like?

Panettone with citrus peel, brandied fruit, and a chocolate swirl.

Are there chunks of cake in it?

Yes, small pieces of panettone throughout.

Does this taste like real gelato?

No. Corners were cut here, and there is a lot of air here, so it lacks the true, denser texture.

Final Thoughts

Trader Joe's Panettone and Chocolate Gelato Frozen Style Dessert is a creative and festive idea. It brings the flavor of panettone into frozen dessert form with citrus peel, brandied fruit notes, and a generous chocolate swirl. It is sweet, seasonal, and interesting.

But it is not quite gelato and not quite ice cream. The texture leans light, and the flavor is fun, yet the whole experience feels like it could have been better if it committed fully to one style. If you love anything panettone, this is absolutely worth trying. If you want that ultra creamy gelato experience, you may walk away wanting more.

Dessert, Frozen, Seasonal, Trader Joe's Trader Joes, Trader Joes Review

Trader Joe's Maple Brioche Liege Waffles Review: Flavor Gone Mild

An unopened bag of Trader Joe's Maple Brioche Liege Waffles.

Trader Joe's loves a seasonal twist on a proven favorite, and the Maple Brioche Liege Waffles are exactly that. If you have tried the regularly offered Liege Waffles, you already know what you are getting here. These new waffles keep the same brioche dough base and pearled sugar crunch, but add a light maple note to fit the season.

If you were hoping for a bold maple punch, these stay on the subtle side. Still sweet. Still chewy. Still loaded with sugar pearls. Just not a dramatic departure from the classic version.

An unopened bag of Trader Joe's Maple Brioche Liege Waffles.
[feast_advanced_jump_to]

Review

Trader Joe's Maple Brioche Liege Waffles come in a pack of six They are made with a brioche style dough, sweetened with the signature pearled sugar, and lightly flavored with maple. They heat quickly in a toaster or oven, and the sugar pearls crisp up when warmed.

The waffles are slightly darker in color than the original version, but otherwise look very similar.

If you enjoy the original Liege Waffles from Trader Joe's, you will like these too. The texture is still the best part. They have that chewy brioche interior, the caramelized sugar bite on the outside, and the satisfying crunch from the pearled sugar on top.

The maple flavor, however, is very subtle. It is there, but it does not take center stage. Most of the sweetness you taste comes from the sugar pearls rather than the maple. Compared to the regular version, these are only a shade sweeter and a shade deeper in color.

They lean sweet, but Liege waffles always do. These feel like a gentle seasonal variation rather than a must stock up item. Nothing wrong with them at all, but nothing that sets them dramatically apart from the original either.

If you love maple, you might wish for a stronger flavor. If you love the original Liege waffles, you may simply reach for those instead.

Overall, a perfectly good waffle with a mild seasonal twist, but not something that replaces the classic.

Nutritional facts and ingredients in Trader Joe's Maple Brioche Liege Waffles.

How to Serve

  • Toast and top with butter and a drizzle of real maple syrup
  • Turn into a maple ice cream sandwich
  • Add fresh berries and whipped cream for brunch
  • Serve with bacon for a salty sweet pairing
  • Use as the base of a quick waffle dessert with caramel sauce

FAQs about Trader Joe's Maple Brioche Liege Waffles

Below is a list of frequently asked questions about this product

How strong is the maple flavor?

Subtle. It is noticeable but not bold.

How do these compare to the original Liege waffles?

Very similar. Same texture and sweetness, just a slight maple twist.

Are they very sweet?

Yes. The pearled sugar makes them sweet even without syrup.

Final Thoughts

Trader Joe's Maple Brioche Liege Waffles take a beloved freezer staple and give it a light seasonal twist. They taste good. They toast beautifully. They still bring that pearled sugar crunch that makes Liege waffles so satisfying.

But the maple flavor is faint, and the overall experience is almost identical to the regularly offered version. If you like the original, you will enjoy these. If you were hoping for a maple forward waffle, this will fall short. Not a must buy, but still a tasty one to have on hand.
