The pros: Trader Joe's Fleur de Sel Caramels are essentially salted caramels. If you love the salty sweet combination, then this a treat for you.
The cons: Texture was all caramel. I think these would have been more successful if they had the a touch of salt on top.
The verdict: I'm not sure who discovered the magic of sweet and salty, but they are absolutely on to something. Caramel for the most part is a bit too sweet for my liking.
Add a touch of salt and then it becomes magical.
Trader Joe's has been known to experiment with this magical concoction from time to time. More often then not those flavors are seasonal. If they are seasonal, then they aren't on shelves for long. Only to maybe be seen at another date.
In the past Trader Joe's has experimented with Pumpkin Spice Salted Caramels and Dark Chocolate Sea Salt Malted Vinegar caramels to varying degrees of success. While both of those were chocolate covered, the only variation of this pure caramel form I've seen since I started this blog would be Trader Joe's Vietnamese Coffee Caramels.
Those caramels have a lot more in common with this item (bummer those coffee caramels were a seasonal thing). These caramels are pliable and a balance of sweet and salty. The wrapper did not hug the product at all.
My only complaint (beyond the obvious that these are addicting) is that there is no texture beyond the caramel present. I would have loved some fleur de sel salt sprinkled on top (in moderation).
Otherwise, for $2.99 these are good for those with a sweet tooth who like moderately sweet, chewy candies that have absolutely no nutritional value.
Here is the visual rundown of what you can expect if you purchase these.

I think those would be great in brownies or even melted down and spooned over ice cream. Or eat with apples!

Really great suggestions Alek! Thanks for sharing!

Oh my gosh Alek nailed it! Imagine biting into a brownie with one or two of these in the middle!
I must say whoever decided to add salt to caramel should be revered and have their own national holiday! And to make it even better add dark chocolate to caramel and sea salt. I just had a wild thought of cocoa rice krispies with one of these melted on every square.

Those cocoa cripsy treats would be aaaaamazing. And yes bless the person who decided to pair those two items together!
Alek says
YES! But I wonder that would be too sweet. Unless adding bit of salt to balance out the sweetness.
Dag says
Good point Alek. And definitely a Sprinkle of salt on top

I was thinking the same thing. A bit of salt on top for contrast and crunch. Yum! Thank you both for the great ideas!

I LOVE these - I make Browned-butter Salted Caramel stuffed Snickerdoodles with them! Use the regular recipe for Snickerdoodles, but brown the butter before adding it to the dough... then when you've chilled the dough and roll it into balls, cut the Caramels in half and make a hole in the ball of dough - cover it up and seal the ball and bake as usual. These are decadent, ADDICTIVE and made great holiday gifts. Make a triple batch. You'll need it. 🙂

Thanks for sharing Martha!

I can't find these at Trader Joe's anymore. Was told they were seasonal? Do you have an update?

Hey Carlyn! I think they've been discontinued. 🙁
