Trader Joe's Truffle Mac and Cheese

The pros:  Trader Joe's Truffle Mac and Cheese is a tasty, well done mushroom mac and cheese with the notes of truffle that are pronounced without being overdone.

The cons:  Watch the calorie count, this box actually contains 2 servings so about 600 calories if you are bringing this to lunch with you. If you've never had truffle before, there is a distinct earthiness that's hard to describe, but it may not be a flavor everyone will appreciate.

The verdict:  For $3.49, this was tasty, well cooked from the microwave, cheesy and all the things you would like in a mac and cheese. It also adds the flavor of truffle (through truffle extract). Truffle is a notoriously expensive ingredient, so don't expect those mushrooms to be actual truffles. Besides, truffles are a finishing item, you add it at the end. However, in terms of truffle flavor, it's there. There is a distinct earthiness about this dish that can only be achieved through some truffle flavoring.

Would I buy this again? For me, Trader Joe's Truffle Mac and Cheese is a yes. It's a nice diversion from the orange hued other mac and cheese products that I find myself buying. It's best as it cools down towards room temperature. The truffle adds a luxurious taste to it. It was filling as a lunch although on the high calorie side. A really nice treat or side dish with a full meal.
