Trader Joe's Sweet Sriracha Uncured Bacon Jerky bag on a red background

Bacon. It’s like meat candy all on its own. Add something sweet and spicy and you have on heck of a combination. The combined saltiness and textural elements work so very well in Trader Joe’s Sweet Sriracha Uncured Bacon Jerky.

Trader Joe’s Cioppino Seafood Stew

An unopened bag of Trader Joe's Cioppino Seafood Stew package

So if I’m going to do all these bread reviews, it’s only fair to share something that could use some bread. Or something for all that bread to sop up. I love a good sauce, but with almost a foot of snow being predicted by the weekend, I was thinking about some hearty meal planning and lots of staying indoors by the weekend.

Trader Joe’s Chicken and Vegetable Wonton Soup

Trader Joe's Chicken and Vegetable Wonton Soup

The pros:  Trader Joe’s Chicken and Vegetable Wonton Soup makes for a quick and low calorie meal. The wontons are the highlight here.

The cons:  You will still need to add water and I wasn’t crazy about the veggies in the broth.

Trader Joe’s Coffee Rubbed Flank Steak

2 · Mar 24, 2017 · Updated October 29, 2018 · 3 Comments

Trader Joe's Coffee Rubbed Flank Steak

If you are searching through the fresh meat aisle there are a few selections which now include March’s new Trader Joe’s theme: coffee. Trader Joe’s Coffee Rubbed Flank Steak made a lot more sense than the Coffee Spatchcocked Chicken. The coffee here was a lot more subtle without being so forward. This makes me wonder why we haven’t seen any red-eye gravy with all this coffee craziness.

The pros:  Trader Joe’s Coffee Rubbed Flank Steak is pre-marinaded so you don’t have to do any of the work.

The cons:   Directions should remind you that for the most tender pieces you should cut the meat across the grain. Touching the meat or the marinade will leave an orange hued stain so be careful if you don’t wish to look like you’ve had a poorly done spray tan.

The verdict:  …

Trader Joe's Butter Lettuce

The pros:  If you find salad to be boring or just love iceberg lettuce, Trader Joe’s Butter Lettuce is a good product to pick up.

The cons:  Not as nutrient dense as some other salads in a bag, but if you need to break up your routine, this is a good one to reach for.

The pros: Trader Joe’s Organic Chocolate Chip Granola Bars is an on the go snack bar that’s organic and full of fiber.

Trader Joe’s Soy Chorizo

95 · Mar 6, 2017 · Updated October 29, 2018 · 4 Comments

Trader Joes Soy Chorizo

The pros:  Trader Joe’s Soy Chorizo is spicy, tasty and happens to be vegan and gluten free and inexpensive at $1.99.

The cons:  If you are looking for it to hold it’s sausage shape you will be disappointed. Meat lovers will miss exactly two things about this “sausage:” the casing and the fact that this really isn’t sausage and will not hold itself together. Might be a bit spicy for some. Will leave that familiar red grease stain anywhere the chorizo touches.

Trader Joe's Uncooked Wild Blue Shrimp

The pros:  With a little planning and a bit of actual cooking, Trader Joe’s Uncooked Wild Blue Shrimp are quite good. Shrimp are a blank canvas and take well to a variety of cooking methods. These were a nice size and were not fishy at all.

Trader Joes This Fig Walks Into a Bar

The pros:  Trader Joe’s This Fig Walks Into a Bar is organic, flavorful, some nutritional value, tasty, inexpensive compared to other organic snack bars.

Trader Joes Fully Cooked Baby Back Pork Ribs

The pros:  Trader Joe’s Fully Cooked Baby Back Ribs are tasty, tender and ready in under 20 minutes.

The cons:  If you are hoping for championship level BBQ, this isn’t it. Doesn’t mean that it’s bad either. It’s just not the best BBQ I’ve ever had. You’ll also want a very sharp knife in order to separate the ribs. Some were no problem, some were a bit of a challenge with a very sharp knife….

Trader Joe's Golden Spiced Milk Chocolate Bar

The pros:  Quinoa and chocolate work in Trader Joe’s Golden Spiced Milk Chocolate Bar to make a crisp texture and in fact I wish and would be willing to buy many bars containing this combination. It’s a healthy improvement to a familiar flavor & texture combination.

The pros:  A new addition to the freezer section. Trader Joe’s Cauliflower and Broccoli Vegetable Patties are quick and easy that taste fresh and require minimal work. While they won’t work out as a burger, they will make a nutritious side dish.

The cons:  You’ll need to add something here to make it more flavorful. This is a blank canvas. I found the addition of a bit of salt to be essential. No microwave allowed on this one.

Stew Leonard’s Chocolate Covered Rice Cakes

3 · Feb 18, 2017 · Updated April 7, 2019 · 3 Comments

Stew Leonard's Rice Cakes

I remember the first time I brought these home. I remember the kind words of my father: Chocolate covered diet food, seriously? I implored him to try one. I implored my mom to try one. After scoffing at the offer, I quickly found my container to have been consumed by someone other than myself. If you’ve stuck your nose up at rice cakes before, you’ll stop doing it. What are rice cakes missing? Obviously, it must be good chocolate and turns into Stew Leonard’s Chocolate Covered Rice Cakes.

The pros:  Great tasting and do come in a variety of flavors that are not always available. I’ve seen white chocolate, dark chocolate, the black and whites pictured below, drizzled, coconut topped, M&M topped, Peanut butter candy topped, and seasonally you’ll see white chocolate and peppermint. Chocolate used tastes of good quality.

The cons:  You mind find yourself being judged for consuming chocolate covered rice cakes. Depending on the topping and how much chocolate is used will dictate how large of a container you get for the price. I think these used to have the calorie count on them.

The verdict:  …

Trader Joe's Kettle Cooked Chicken Soup

The pros:  Trader Joe’s Kettle Cooked Chicken Soup is tasty, well made, fresh tasting, and not too salty.

The cons:  If you want noodles you’ll have to add them yourself. Soup isn’t overly salty, so depending on your preference you may want to add some salt. Not as cheap as the canned varieties, but the quality is here. More than a quarter of the sodium you should eat in a day.
