Trader Joe's Caramel Apple Flavored Granola

Trader Joe's Caramel Apple Flavored Granola

The Fearless Flyer should land on Monday. In the meanwhile, I'm gearing up for my fall/winter body with all the goodies on shelves. Aside from the usual pumpkin offerings, it seems they have been branching off even more.

Trader Joe's Caramel Apple Flavored Granola Review

Taste

Among the things that ended up in my cart in the last 24 hours have included: Caramel Cookie Crunch and Pistachio gelato, a new Autumnal Harvest Soup, new organic Turkey Bites, Corn on the Cob Popping Corn, Chocolate Salted Caramel Mug Mix, Vanilla Bean infused Maple Syrup, Cheesy Spaghetti Squash Casserole, El Salvador small-lot coffee, Hot Cocoa Dunkers Cookies, and Harvest Spaghetti Squash Spirals. My cart was screaming "Di-a-bee-tus."

I did manage to pick up a few items that have some nutritional value to them while I was there too. All were in the produce section: fresh carrot spirals, butternut squash spirals, and pre-cut spaghetti squash that can be microwaved. It seems like they are taking advantage of some of the spiralized veggie crazes and I'm cool with that too.

So if you want to chime in and let me know which items you want to see first, I'm happy to make the sacrifice :). No seriously. I really want to hear which ones you want to read about first.

But in the meanwhile, behold new granola that is autumn flavored. There are spiced pumpkin seeds in this, so while the name doesn't hit as such, they are there. Trader Joe snuck them into an unsuspecting bag. They added some peanuts to round out the nuttiness here.

Not too long ago I tried Trader Joe's Peanut Butter Protein Granola. I really liked it. It was peanut buttery, filling, snackable, and really well done. Something I could sit and munch on the whole bag.

So expectations are high on this one. But this is a very different product altogether.

As savory as the peanut butter is, this item leans on the sweet side. There are large chunks of dried apple in each bite. Some chunks of dried apples are quite large. So if you aren't into dried fruit, this might not be your thing.

Likewise, there is a good amount of caramel holding this together. There is a strong splash of vanilla to round out the flavors here. I ate mine right out of the bag, but there is an interesting recipe on the side suggesting you could eat this as a warm cereal. On my to-do list of ways to enjoy this.

Overall

Now, if you are looking to avoid sugars, this is not an item to reach for. If you want that sweetened cereal taste, then this is pretty solid. The seeds and nuts are not as forward as other granolas.

But trying this it was obvious that this was trying to be something different and uniquely seasonal. To which it is. While it won't be available all year long, it isn't a bad item to try, but it is one of those flavors I would probably enjoy just once a year.

For $3.49 this is priced in line with the other granolas on shelves. This isn't my favorite granola. It's on you might find yourself picking at it regardless.

Would I buy this again? While I like Trader Joe's Caramel Apple Flavored Granola, I still prefer Trader Joe's Peanut Butter Protein Granola Better.

Trader Joe's Organic Cold Pressed Fuji Apple Spiced Cider

An unopened bottle of Trader Joe's Organic Cold Pressed Fuji Apple Spiced Cider with a red background

I want to make sure I'm not bombarding you all with everything pumpkin. Because this year, it seems that the seasonal flavors are being fanned out to include more apple and maple. Both are welcome additions. I welcome them even more if they are done well. Trader Joe's Organic Cold Pressed Fuji Apple Spiced Cider

Taste and review

Good news. Count this among them.

I'm a really big fan of Trader Joe's Honey Crisp Apple Cider. It's almost as fresh as a freshly pressed juice.

If you are a Starbucks fan, this is pretty close to the Caramel Apple Spice drink they offer. Except this is refrigerated. And there is no added syrup.

Here you have that super fresh apple taste coming from organic Fuji Apples. Fuji apples are sweet, not tart. All the freshness tastes like it has been contained in this little plastic bottle. And when I say little, I'm talking about 12 ounces. Same size as a soda can. So I'm not sure why they have to remind you to consume this in three days is that this is considered one serving.

For $1.99, it isn't cheap when you think about the fact the Honey Crisp Cider goes for $2.99 for a 64-ounce bottle. Your call how you want to spend your money.

But what makes this product different is that it is a spiced cider. The spice is well-balanced and neither the cinnamon nor the clove was overwhelming. They achieved a good balance on this one.

Overall

If cider makes you happy during this sweater weather (ok, maybe not yet in New York, but hopefully soon), then this is a good option if you enjoy a sweet apple cider with the right amount of spice.

Would I buy this again? Yes, while not cheap, Trader Joe's Organic Cold Pressed Fuji Apple Spiced Cider is delicious.

Trader Joe's Vermont Ghosted Maple Syrup

Trader Joe's Vermont Ghosted Maple Syrup

Before you criticize my con of this being hot. I'm aware of how hot ghost pepper is supposed to be. But short of the actual grinder of ghost peppers that Trader Joe's sells, a lot of the products have had the heat level toned down to be more palatable.

Taste and review

The here today, gone tomorrow ghost pepper cheddar hit shelves and was hot. This is much hotter.

I took a bit on a spoon and tried it. I tried maybe a teaspoon. Right away, I could tell that this was really good maple syrup. If they sold the maple syrup on its own, then it justifies the price.

Then the heat kicked in. It's hot. And it lingers. I walked around my house mouth agape for a bit in a poor attempt to cool the burn. Now, it's not chili pepper contest eating hot. It's just hotter than my usual reach for medium wings.

So speaking of wings, now comes the question: how do I use this product? My answer is not so many pancakes, but something more savory. I mean, if you want your pancakes to burn, by all means, use it this way. But I know the quantity of maple syrup I use for pancakes, which would make it less than enjoyable.

This item begs for savory with a hint of sweetness for contrast. My goal is to use this for some chicken and waffles. Or maybe some spicy maple bacon. Even a veggie where I would think about using maple syrup would be a good use of this. And yes, some maple glaze wings would play well with this product. One of my readers on Facebook, Juli Michele said she used it successfully in unsweetened hot cocoa.

But I would only drizzle this product. Someone who likes heat more might not feel the same way. But in either case, this is a quality product. It's not for everyone and not for the faint of heart. It's also for people who are willing to get creative with this product. If all you are going to use it for is your morning breakfast, it might not be the right fit for you.

Overall

If you are up for a culinary challenge and can stand the heat, then you have a really good maple syrup that brings the heat. For $8.99 it isn't cheap. But real maple syrup is a premium product.

And if you missed out on this product, Amazon does sell other ghost pepper-infused maple syrups.

Would I buy this again? One bottle of Trader Joe's Vermont Ghosted Maple Syrup should get me through the year. While it is different, I look forward to trying the new and more mellow Vanilla Infused Maple syrup of some of the newer maple syrups hitting shelves.

Trader Joe's Carrot Cake Spread

An unopened jar of Trader Joe's Carrot Cake Spread

When a reader, H M, mentioned that this was new to shelves I got excited. And then H M tried it. And gave it a big thumbs down. Intrigued, I hunted for this product. I, too, agree. Here is a product that I had a fantasy about what it must taste like. My vision for this was like the carrot cake equivalent of cookie butter.

trader joe's carrot cake spread

Taste and review

H M warned me in advance that it has no flour and no eggs. Then the bomb was dropped: this is more of a chutney. And a weird one at that.

I'm not sure why they picked carrot cake for the name. It has ingredients that you probably wouldn't find in most run-of-the-mill carrots cakes: pineapple, apple juice concentrate, and pectin.

The dominant flavor is raisin (which isn't a favorite of mine) and sugar. It's very sweet. But the biggest problem with me was taste and texture. Neither worked for me.

Even going through how to use this, I couldn't see myself enjoying it in any of those ways. And especially not how the jar mentions eating it: by the spoonful. A little nibble and my face scrunched up in disgust.

Perhaps if someone wants to experiment with using this in a more savory way, I'm all ears on how you are using this. But I loved neither the taste nor the texture nor the name carrot cake. It's a spread. It seems deeply misnamed. I'm sure this will have its fans, but you can't count on me being one of them.

Overall

For $2.99 I'm not a fan of this one. It's way too sweet, doesn't taste like anything remotely carrot cake-like, and wasn't enjoyable to eat on its own. Fortunately, it is seasonal. So the shelves will be cleared at some point to make room for some other things.

Would I buy this again? No. This is one of those rare times I'll have to take advantage of their return policy.

Trader Joe's Hot Cocoa Organic Frosted Toaster Pastries

Trader Joe's Hot Cocoa Organic Frosted Toaster Pastries

The Fall items have landed. The Fearless Flyer for September will land in less than two weeks but Trader Joe's has dropped what looks like a winter seasonal item on us. Yes, the Pumpkin Toaster Pastries are back. As much as I dig the pumpkin items, I do love a break from them as well.

Taste and review

This isn't the first time Trader Joe's had put a chocolate item as a seasonal item. I very much miss the chocolate chip waffles that I had two years ago but did not come back on shelves.

So while I deeply hope they will bring back that decadent breakfast treat, I have a new chocolate item to fill my morning chocolate cravings. If you are a chocolate fan and Pop Tart fan, then you'll probably like these.

Now, the only source of controversy here is the frosting. Some people love it, some hate it. In either case, I don't feel like it added much here.

But that is probably the only flaw here. I popped mine in the toaster and in a matter of 2 minutes the middle was molten in the best possible chocolatey way.

It had that chocolate lava cake flattened into a toaster pastry. The dominant note here is chocolate. For me, it was less hot cocoa but more deeply chocolate. This is a well-done product. If you've had a Pop-Tart then you are already familiar with what these are like: dense pastry with filling and a hard frosting.

Not a bad way to start your day.

Overall

For $2.99 these are worth keeping an eye out for. I'd absolutely recommend heating these. I often skip that step, but that melty center really made these that much more awesome.

Lastly, if you find yourself falling in love with the taste of these, then be warned that this is a seasonal item. So when it is off the shelves odds are the next time you'll see this is during the fall/winter holiday season.
