Trader Joe's Zhoug Sauce Review: A Little Green Kick in the Taste Buds

Trader Joe's Zhoug Sauce opened revealing the green sauce

If your taste buds are craving a flavor adventure, Trader Joe's Zhoug Sauce might just be your new best friend. This vibrant green sauce is like a wake-up call for your palate, delivering a punch of heat and a burst of fresh herbs that can transform even the most mundane meal into something memorable.

Review

Zhoug Sauce is a Middle Eastern condiment with roots in Yemeni cuisine. Trader Joe's version combines cilantro, canola oil, jalapeño peppers, chile flakes, garlic, cardamom, sea salt, and cumin seeds to create a spicy, aromatic sauce that's as versatile as it is flavorful.

The first time I cracked open Trader Joe's Zhoug Sauce, I had no idea what I was in for. The moment that vibrant green sauce hit the air, it was like a punch in the face from the herb garden. Cilantro, jalapeños, garlic-this sauce doesn't hold back, and I mean that in the best way possible.

The texture is rustic and a little chunky, like a cross between a pesto and a chimichurri. It's not some dainty drizzle you'd get on a fancy restaurant plate-it's unapologetically bold and a little bit messy, which makes me love it even more.

Flavor-wise, this stuff is like a flavor bomb. The jalapeños bring the heat, but it's not the kind of heat that makes you regret every life decision leading up to this moment. It's more of a pleasant tingle that warms your mouth and keeps you coming back for more. The cilantro is the real star here, bright and fresh and herbaceous. The cumin and cardamom add a depth that makes you pause and think, "Wait, what is that flavor? I need more."

I tried it first on pita bread, and it was like a party in my mouth. Then I got adventurous-stirred it into scrambled eggs, slathered it on a sandwich, even added a dollop to a bowl of soup. Every time, it transformed a basic meal into something crave-worthy.

One thing to know: a little goes a long way. I made the rookie mistake of piling it on like guacamole, and let's just say my taste buds got a serious wake-up call. If you're sensitive to heat, start small and build your way up. For everyone else, dive right in and enjoy the ride.

This sauce is the perfect example of why I love Trader Joe's. It's unique, affordable, and makes me feel like a culinary rock star without actually being one. Sure, it's a bit of a flavor punch, but that's what makes it so fun. If your fridge needs a little spice-and let's be honest, whose doesn't? Zhoug Sauce deserves a spot in there.

Final Thoughts

Trader Joe's Zhoug Sauce is the kind of condiment that makes your taste buds stand up and do a little dance. It's fresh, fiery, and just the right amount of wild-like a party guest who's always the first on the dance floor. This sauce takes boring meals and makes them anything but. Whether you're adding a dollop to eggs, slathering it on a sandwich, or mixing it into rice, Zhoug Sauce brings the kind of excitement that keeps your kitchen from feeling like the same old, same old. Just be warned: it's got a kick, so if you're not into spicy, proceed with caution. But if you're ready to add a bold, herbaceous twist to your meals, Zhoug Sauce is the flavor bomb your fridge has been waiting for.

Trader Joe's Truffle Salt with Black Truffles

Trader Joe's Truffle Salt with Black Truffles package opened

Truffle evokes exactly two emotions: Yum or Yuck. It doesn't seem to be much in between on this flavor. But odds are if you are reading this review, you are part of the yum part of the population who likes the earthy flavor that is truffle.

Pinterest Image for Trader Joe's Truffle Salt with Black Truffles review

This winter we have seen the return of Truffle Mac and Cheese, Truffle Butter, White Truffle Potato chips, and even Truffle Dip. So on the end cap, not too long ago were these little jars of salt. While I recently reviewed the lovely gift set 7 Salts of the Earth, it only contained one truly flavored salt. But Trader Joe's Truffle Salt with Black Truffles is a salt all unto its own.

For $3.99 this is the cheapest truffle salt around. The last time I was in Sur La Table, I'm pretty sure I spent almost $10 to get a jar of the same size. When opening the jar, it's clear that they did not short change you in any way of truffles. That's a good thing. Ever since they debuted the truffle butter, my morning scrambled eggs have not been the same (and I'm not sure I ever want to go back).

To be fair there seem to be two groups when it comes to truffles: OMG Yum and OMG yuck. I'm part of the first group. I love the earthiness of truffles that is so difficult to describe. You can impart a good amount of truffle flavor in just a sprinkling of this salt.

What else does truffle salt pair well with? According to The Flavor Bible "bacon, beef, cauliflower, chicken, cod, eggs, foie gras, langoustines, lemon, mushrooms, olive oil, pears, potatoes, rabbit, scallops, shellfish, chicken stock, tarragon, and balsamic vinegar" all pair well with the flavor of black truffles. As for me, it's been fun to experiment to see what works well, but there is also enough of this to last until my supply of black truffle butter runs out.

This item was priced well and did not shy away from truffle flavor. I hope this is around next year.

Would I buy this again?  While I won't have the chance to buy Trader Joe's Truffle Salt with Black Truffles again this year, I would absolutely buy this again in the future.
