Trader Joe's Puff Dogs

Trader Joe's Puff Dogs

The pros:  Trader Joe's Puff Dogs are a play on pigs in a blanket.

The cons: The puff didn't rise as much as I would have liked. Also, this does not come in a resealable package

The verdict:

While I should have gotten to this product sooner, this is a timely review as just the other day we here in the USA celebrated the original Brexit (1776 style). Trader Joe's Puff Dogs are new and have started some controversy. Across the pond they actually refer to items like this as sausage rolls and there has been some twitter outrage since this product made its debut.

In fact, one blog I follow, Paul Davies Cartoons, is written by a British fellow is both a talented cartoonist and has a bit of a fascination about what we Americans think of food. I can only imagine his thoughts on this matter. Now, I honestly don't think that Trader Joe's was trying to take credit for inventing any product here, however, my opinion on that can not be verified. Although they offer something similar in a smaller size known as Trader Joe's Parmesan Pastry Pups which as essentially a similar product that is smaller in size and adds a sprinkling of cheese.

The pups are mini, but these are very much full sized. Now, I've never had a real sausage roll from the U.K. In my household, we've taken a can of Pillsbury Crescent Rolls and wrapped (or swaddled as this packaging terminology goes) it on a hot dog. Thus, eliminating the need for hot dog rolls, which oddly enough are rarely sold in the same quantity as hot dogs themselves.

For $6.49 you are getting five swaddled dogs by any name you wish to call them. What's important here is what they taste like. The hot dogs are good. They were cooked perfectly by following the directions on the package and were cooked through in the time listed. The puff which is made of puff pastry reminded me of a cross between a Pillsbury Crescent roll and a Croissant. It wasn't puffy enough to be a croissant, but not quite as dense as the crescent roll. Some parts were light and flaky with some nice layers, other parts were more on the dense side and a bit heavy. These were not nearly as greasy as the Parmesan Pups.

Overall, they were good. By whatever name you wish to call them, they will satisfy that craving for pigs in a blanket. Best of all you won't have to open an entire can of crescent rolls or deal with wrapping up a mostly uneaten package of hot dogs. If you like pigs in a blanket, then you'll probably like these dogs in a blanket too. As for me, I'd consider buying them again. They also make for a quick lunch or dinner item.

Here is the visual run down of what you are getting when you buy Trader Joe's Puff Dogs:

Trader Joe's A Dozen Sweet Bites Review: The Perfect Portion to Have Your Cake and Eat it Too

Trader Joe's A Dozen Sweet Bites

Who says you have to go to a fancy bakery to enjoy fancy desserts? Trader Joe's A Dozen Sweet Bites is your ticket to feeling like a French pastry chef, without the stress, the cost, or the inevitable sugar meltdown from eating a full-sized cake. This frozen dessert sampler is here to save your sweet tooth, one mini bite at a time.

Review

Each box comes packed with twelve bite-sized desserts, featuring four of each variety:

  • Chocolate & Coffee Opera Cake: Layers of almond sponge, coffee syrup, coffee buttercream, and chocolate ganache.
  • Raspberry Macaron Aux Framboises Cake: A raspberry macaron crust on vanilla cream and sponge cake, topped with a raspberry glaze.
  • Caramel & Chocolate Cake: Chocolate cake with caramel cream and a glossy caramel glaze.

These are made in France and bring a touch of European dessert charm right to your freezer.

Let's be honest: I love dessert, and I'm always on the lookout for something that feels a little fancy without the fuss. Trader Joe's A Dozen Sweet Bites checks all the boxes: variety, presentation, and that special ooh-la-la factor you'd expect from a French patisserie.

When I opened the box, the first thing I noticed was how cute and perfectly portioned each little dessert was-like something out of a fancy bakery display, but frozen and waiting for me in my sweatpants. Each one looked distinctly different, which made me feel like I was getting a curated dessert tasting right at home.

I started with the Chocolate & Coffee Opera Cake, and wow, talk about rich! It's got layers of almond sponge cake soaked in coffee syrup, balanced with a smooth coffee buttercream and topped with chocolate ganache. It's definitely the most sophisticated of the bunch. The coffee flavor is strong but not overpowering, and the texture is spot-on: moist but with just enough bite to keep it interesting.

Next up was the Raspberry Macaron Aux Framboises Cake-and yes, I had to practice saying that one a few times. This one is lighter, fruity, and a little bit tart in the best way. The raspberry flavor comes through nicely without being too sweet or artificial. The macaron top is soft rather than crisp, but that actually worked for me because it didn't fall apart when I bit into it.

Finally, I tried the Caramel & Chocolate Cake, and this one felt like the indulgent treat of the bunch. The caramel cream is smooth and sweet, but not cloying, and the chocolate base holds up well underneath. It's the kind of bite that makes you want to reach for a second (or third) and then remember that portion control is technically a thing.

One thing I really liked is that these desserts thaw pretty quickly-perfect for when you get that sudden sweet craving. I left mine out for about 30 minutes, and they were good to go. They're not huge, but that's part of their charm. If you're someone who likes variety (guilty!), these are a fun way to sample different flavors without going overboard on any one dessert.

Would I serve these at a fancy dinner party? Maybe with some fresh berries and whipped cream to dress them up. Would I devour them on the couch with a fork and no shame? Absolutely. For a freezer find, they're surprisingly delightful-and way easier than making three different desserts from scratch.

Final Thoughts

Trader Joe's A Dozen Sweet Bites is that freezer gem you didn't know you needed but will soon wonder how you lived without. These mini cakes are cute, convenient, and deliver just enough fancy to make any night feel like a special occasion. They're perfect for sharing at a get-together or hoarding for yourself on the couch with a fork in one hand and your favorite show on in the background.

Are they going to replace your favorite neighborhood bakery? Probably not. But for a budget-friendly, no-bake option that looks like you spent hours curating the dessert tray, these little bites are a sweet treat worth celebrating. When it comes to quick desserts with minimal effort, Trader Joe's A Dozen Sweet Bites takes the cake and then some.

Trader Joe’s Watermelon Cucumber Cooler Review: Summer in a Bottle?

Trader Joe's Watermelon Cooler

Every year, when warmer weather rolls in, Trader Joe's brings out some fun seasonal drinks, and one of the most talked about is their Watermelon Cucumber Cooler. Priced at $3.49 for a 64-oz bottle, it's bright pink, super refreshing, and screams "poolside vibes."

Trader Joe's Watermelon Cooler
[feast_advanced_jump_to]

Review

This drink has become a seasonal staple for good reason. It's light, hydrating, and tastes like summer in a glass. The watermelon is the dominant flavor-sweet, juicy, and fruity-while the cucumber adds a cooling, crisp note that rounds it out without being too vegetal or grassy. Think spa water but with a bit more personality.

It's not carbonated and not overly sweet, which I really appreciate. The balance of flavor makes it versatile on its own or as a mixer. I've poured it over ice, added some sparkling water for fizz, and even used it in a cocktail with vodka and fresh mint. It works every time.

It's shelf-stable until opened, so you can keep a few bottles on hand. Just make sure to refrigerate after opening and give it a good shake before pouring, as some of the fruit solids may settle to the bottom.

It can make for an interesting mocktail or cocktail with the right amount of alcohol. If you're really craving straight-up watermelon, then reach for the watermelon juice in the refrigerated case instead.

Otherwise, this is a fun seasonal find as long as your find both cucumber and watermelon refreshing.

FAQs about Trader Joe's Watermelon Cucumber Cooler

The following are commonly asked questions about this product:

Is Trader Joe's Watermelon Cucumber Cooler carbonated?

Nope, it's still not sparkling. But it pairs well with bubbly mixers.

Is it overly sweet?

Not at all, it's lightly sweet with a clean finish. Great for sipping on hot days.

Is it only available seasonally?

Yes, it typically shows up in late spring and summer and disappears as the weather cools.

Final Thoughts

Trader Joe's Watermelon Cucumber Cooler is one of those fun summer finds that makes a comeback for good reason. It's flavorful without being over-the-top, and it's just as good on its own as it is in a spritzer or cocktail. Whether you're entertaining or just looking to cool off, this cooler deserves a spot in your fridge before it vanishes with the season.

The cons:  This is pricier than the basic varieties of coffee, but not as ridiculously priced as Trader Joe's Geisha or Kona Coffee varieties. It's small lot which makes me concerned that there may be some consistency issues.
