Madras Cocktail

A pair of Madras Cocktails

This Madras Cocktail might remind you of a more familiar, but classic cocktail the Cape Codder. The Madras drink adds both color and sweetness with the addition of orange juice. A perfect summertime cocktail that is a good balance of sweet and tart.

Two finished Madras Cocktails with limes slices leading up to the drinks

Maybe overly sweet cocktails aren't your thing. A Vodka Cranberry or Cape Codder is on the tart side of things from the slightly astringent taste of cranberries. But cranberry cocktails are usually made, with cranberry cocktail juice and not 100% pure cranberry juice.

History of the Madras Cocktail

If cocktail history teaches us anything, it is that a heck of a lot of cocktails is closely related to one another. Usually, vodka-based cocktails made an appearance sometime after 1945.

And if anything, you may have heard this referred to as a "Mattress Cocktail" since the words sound somewhat close together. Perhaps they will sound more alike if you have a few of these.

But if you look at this recipe, it is a close cousin to the Cape Codder, which is also referred to as a Vodka Cranberry. As with ordering cocktails, a different name means something has been added or deleted.

The Cape Codder has other various cocktails that are derived from it.

  • A Sea Breeze adds grapefruit juice
  • A Bay Breeze adds pineapple juice.
  • My Malibu Bay Breeze adds pineapple juice but also swaps the vodka for coconut rum.
  • And yes, a Madras adds orange juice to a Cape Codder.
  • And if you make this Madras with Rum it is then called a White Madras.

In this case, the addition of the splash of orange juice gives this a new name and a whole new look. It also adds a touch of sweetness without the use of simple syrup.

Tips for Making This

Here are my best tips for making this cocktail:

  • Because of the amount of juice in this drink, serve in a tall glass.
  • Be sure your juices are chilled before making this, otherwise consider using a cocktail shaker
  • Use Cranberry Cocktail and not 100% Cranberry Juice
  • Always use quality ice
  • This is a stirred cocktail, which means there is no extra equipment required to make this at home.

Variations of this Cocktail

If you aren't a fan of vodka, then fear not. Here are a few ways to vary this cocktail

  • If you use tequila, this becomes a Mexican Madras
  • If you use gin, you might want to adjust the amount of OJ and shake this instead of pouring it

Trader Joe's Coffee Lover's Espresso Beans

An unopened bag of Trader Joe's Coffee Lovers Espresso Beans

Some aisles at Trader Joe's have gotten larger over time, some have seen diminishing shelf space. Coffee recently has entered the world of diminishing shelf space. Some of the coffees are really good, some not so much. And sadly, with the addition of small-lot coffees, by the time you realize that you love a certain coffee, they are often off the shelves likely to never be seen again. Coffee aside, this isn't Trader Joe's first rodeo with coffee and chocolate, just now you have a small snackable-sized bag with Trader Joe's Coffee Lovers Espresso Beans.

An unopened bag of Trader Joe's Coffee Lovers Espresso Beans

Taste

The last time Trader Joe's added a product that was both so very chocolatey and coffee-flavored it was with Trader Joe's Dark Coffee Squares. But that didn't quite have the same literal coffee ground taste that Trader Joe's Cold Brew Coffee Bar had.

In Trader Joe's Coffee Lovers Espresso Beans, they are giving you the beans. Within each one of these candies, there is a whole espresso bean. So if chomping down on a fully roasted bean doesn't sound appealing to you then walk away from this product.

For me chomping down on a whole espresso bean isn't my favorite thing in the world, but I know some people don't mind it.

When you open this bag it also smells like a coffee shop. Or at least a Starbucks, but there is no hiding the aroma.

The bag is small at 2.5 ounces, but if you manage to nosh on this whole bag it will set you back 360 calories.

But in this bag, you are getting 4 different types of candies.

Flavors and review

White Chocolate- This is white chocolate, but you'll notice it is speckled. The speckles are grounds of coffee that have been added for texture and flavor. It's not cheap white chocolate and the coffee adds some texture in addition to the beans.

Coffee Au Lait- or at least that is what I'm calling this really light brown candy. Anyways, this seems to be somewhere between white and milk chocolate. The coffee flavor hits when you get to the bean in the middle.

Milk Chocolate- pleasant but not cloyingly sweet milk chocolate. The coffee flavor hits when you get to the bean.

Dark Chocolate- good dark chocolate but is slightly sweet dark, but this one seems to compliment the bean the best.

Overall

For $0.99 it is pretty well done. Considering how small it is, I was able to just take a few because they were providing both sweetness and a bit of a mid-afternoon pick me up.

Would I buy this again? I may or may not buy Trader Joe's Coffee Lovers Espresso Beans again. They were tasty, but I'm sure there will be new treats to snack on in the near future as well. But if you need your buzz or really like coffee, this is well made.

Trader Joe's Organic Carrots of Many Colors

An unopen bag of Trader Joe's Organic Carrots

You might look at this product and say, "Wait haven't you already reviewed Trader Joe's Organic Carrots of Many Colors before?" And the answer is sort of. You see these carrots are dehydrated, I've reviewed the fully hydrated bag of Trader Joe's Carrots of Many Colors and Trader Joe's Colorful Carrot Coins previously. This now makes the third colorful carrot product I've reviewed so far.

An unopened bag of Trader Joe's Organic Carrots of Many Colors

This is also my least favorite out of all of them.

Taste

I'm sorry, but I haven't reviewed anything this ugly since reviewing Trader Joe's Dried Baby Bananas. If you haven't seen what is hiding in that package it looks like something my cat would leave in his litter box. Or fingers of the dead. Your choice of analogy.

Now, I'm not against ugly food in any way. But it does have to taste good.

So how can a product with 2 ingredients: carrots and salt taste bad?

Easy. Mess with the texture. A carrot is not up there in terms of the most hydrated veggie. In fact, I tend to believe it is one of the driest, to begin with. Which makes it perfect for dipping.

But here through some type of dehydrated magic, the taste feels wonky. There is a hard to describe taste here which makes it hard to decipher whether or not it is related to the space age texture.

And yes, these remind me a lot of Trader Joe's Freeze-Dried Strawberries. They have a unique styrofoam-like texture as do Trader Joe's Organic Carrots of Many Colors. But for some reason, I don't love the taste of these carrots on their own.

I'd eat a bag of fully hydrated carrots any day. Now, maybe if I had paired these with a dip, my feelings might change, but on their own, they don't wow me in flavor or price.

I'm not throwing out this bag. Why?

Odds are, if I'm cooking and need some carrots, I'll just rehydrate these.

Overall

For $2.99 this is one of those healthy snacks that you don't need. Regular carrots are far more affordable, go well with dip, and offer quite a bit of crunch. Best of all, they don't have a space-age texture and after taste in the same way that these do.

Would I buy this again? No, I will not buy Trader Joe's Organic Carrots of Many Colors again.

Trader Joe's Pimento Cheese Dip Review: Cheddar Late Than Never

An unopened container of Trader Joe's Pimento Cheese Dip

Let's be real, when you think of Southern comfort food, pimento cheese is right up there with fried chicken and sweet tea. Trader Joe's knows this, so they went and put their own spin on this classic with their Pimento Cheese Dip. Priced at around $4.99, it's creamy, cheesy, and suspiciously addictive. But is it a must-have for your fridge, or just another tub of orange goo?

[feast_advanced_jump_to]

Review

Trader Joe's Pimento Cheese Dip comes in an 11-ounce container that practically screams, "Open me, I'm delicious!" (Okay, maybe that's just me talking to my fridge at midnight.) Inside, you'll find a creamy blend of shredded cheddar cheese and mayonnaise, pimentos, and just enough spice to keep things interesting. The texture is thick and spreadable-perfect for slathering on crackers, toast, or even sneaking spoonfuls straight from the tub (no shame here).

I popped the lid and was instantly greeted by a whiff of cheesy goodness, with a little zing from the pimentos. It looked inviting-like that Southern grandma at the family reunion who insists you eat second and third helpings.

Trader Joe's Pimento Cheese Dip is all about balance. It's creamy and cheesy with a gentle tang, but it's not overly spicy or overwhelmingly mayo-y (which some grocery store versions can be). The cheddar cheese gives it richness, while the pimentos add that signature Southern flair. Overall, it's mild but flavorful-like the cheese dip that's been to etiquette school.

This dip is thick, with real shreds of cheese throughout. It's spreadable enough for crackers and sandwiches, but sturdy enough to stand up to a sturdy tortilla chip. It's not runny or gloopy, which I appreciate

What I Loved:

  • It's got that perfect cheesy tang that makes it super snackable.
  • The consistency is just right-smooth but with enough texture to feel substantial.
  • It's easy to eat straight from the tub (don't judge me).

What I'd Change:

It could use a touch more salt or seasoning to really pop.

A little more zing wouldn't hurt-some versions of pimento cheese come with a peppery kick that's missing here.

How to Serve It

  • Straight from the Tub: Midnight snackers, unite!
  • With Crackers: The classic move-like, why mess with tradition?
  • On Sandwiches: This makes a killer spread on toasted bread or even dolloped on top of a burger.
  • As a Dip: Pair with tortilla chips, pretzels, or veggie sticks.

FAQs about Trader Joe's Pimento Cheese Dip

The following are commonly asked questions about this product:

Is this dip spicy?

Not really. It's mild, so you won't be reaching for a glass of milk after every bite.

Is it gluten-free?

Check the label, but most versions are naturally gluten-free since it's just cheese, mayo, and pimentos.

Can I heat it up?

Technically yes, but it's best enjoyed cold or at room temperature for that creamy texture.

Final Thoughts

Trader Joe's Pimento Cheese Dip might not reinvent the wheel, but it sure makes it cheesier. It's creamy, flavorful, and easy to love-just the thing for crackers, sandwiches, or sneaky spoonfuls when no one's looking. If you're in the mood for a Southern classic done Trader Joe's style, this is a fridge staple you won't regret.

Pink Squirrel

Two finished Pink Squirrels garnished with cherries

Think of the Pink Squirrel as the drink your grandma used to drink but make it chic. This retro gem blends almond‑flavored crème de noyaux (or amaretto), white crème de cacao, and heavy cream into a silky pink dream that's equal parts cocktail and dessert.

Whether you're hosting a throwback-themed party or just craving something sweet and sippable, this cocktail is a showstopper. And hey, it takes less effort than choosing between Netflix titles.

  • 1 oz heavy cream (or milk / half & half for lighter version)
Grenandine, amaretto and creme de cocoa

Why You'll Love This Recipe

  • Silky-smooth: Almond meets chocolate meets cream in an iconic throwback flavor trio.
  • Easy dessert cocktail: Only three ingredients and a couple shakes to sip-worthy.
  • Nostalgia in a glass: It tastes like mid‑century supper clubs, but your couch.

Tips & Tricks

  • Don't have crème de noyaux? Use amaretto plus a drop of red food coloring to get that pink hue.
  • Lighter option: Swap cream for milk or half and half for a gentler sip.
  • Frozen twist: For an over-the-top treat, blend with vanilla ice cream until smooth.

FAQs about the Pink Squirrel

Can I make it non-alcoholic?

Yes! Substitute crème de noyaux with a drop of almond extract and crème de cacao with chocolate syrup. Use cream or milk and blend for a smooth mocktail.

How strong is it?

It's meant to be a silky, low‑proof dessert cocktail, not a heavy hitter.

Can I double it for two or more?

Absolutely. Just scale proportions and shake in batches or a larger shaker.

Where was this drink invented?

This drink is credited to Byrant's Cocktail Lounge in Wisconsin.
