Trader Joe's Turmeric Ginger Coconut Beverage

An unopened box of Trader Joe's Tumeric Ginger Coconut Beverage

If one area has been consistently expanding, it is the non-dairy options at Trader Joe's. While I've tried some interesting flavors from blueberry lavender to matcha to the seasonal chocolate peppermint, Trader Joe's Turmeric Ginger Coconut Beverage is far and away in a class it's own both in taste and in color.

Taste

First off, for those who are unfamiliar, golden milk has been around for a while. Its popularity has risen over time. And let's admit something: anything brightly colored ends up being popular on most social media channels. Health and wellness sites, report there are various potential health benefits to adding turmeric to one's milk. However, you are always free to do your own research on the matter.

And when I mentioned brightly colored, I mean this is the brightest thing I've seen without artificial coloring. It pours like a thinned-out French's Mustard (which also has turmeric to it).

Now, unlike all the other non-dairy drinks I mentioned, this one stands out, but I don't think this is going to resonate with everyone.

This drink tastes mostly of turmeric as there is a mildly spicy ginger-like flavor to it, which might also come from the ginger juice that is present here. Adding to the mild spice is the addition of black pepper.

One thing that is surprising here is the addition of honey. Although this product seems to try to appeal to a lot of groups: dairy-free, gluten-free, and soy-free, this product isn't vegan due to the presence of honey. Using maple syrup instead would have allowed this to be a vegan product as well.

But overall the flavor here was subtly sweet, mildly coconut-y, spiced with ginger. But most importantly, it did have that milky creaminess despite being nondairy. Well done on that end.

That being said, I tried this two different ways: cold and warm.

I preferred this slightly warm rather than chilled in the refrigerator. I felt like the flavors were more enjoyable that way due to their spiced nature of them. In either case, this was a fun item to try but wasn't my thing.

Now full disclosure, this was my first time having golden milk, so if anyone has a comparison point I'd love to hear from you.

I'm not too sure how many pre-made ready-to-go golden milk drinks are out there, although there are some that are in powder form. But in all fairness, with a decent spice cabinet, this is something that can be made at home.

Overall

For $2.69 if you are curious it may be worth trying.

Would I buy this again? No, I won't be buying Trader Joe's Turmeric Ginger Coconut Beverage again.

Trader Joe's Strawberry Greek Frozen Yogurt Parfait Bars

An unopened box of Trader Joe's Strawberry Greek Frozen Yogurt Parfait Bars

Confession time: One food-related item that I've made a point not to publish or try is yogurt. To date, the only yogurt products I've put up reviews for are the ones where the yogurt is buried with another ingredient. Why? Of all the dairy items I consume, I detest yogurt. So why would I try something like Trader Joe's Strawberry Greek Frozen Yogurt Parfait Bars?

Taste

It's new. It also tastes pretty good. Not just pretty good for yogurt, but pretty good in general.

Now, this isn't an overly tangy type of bar. Nope, this is way heavier on the strawberry flavor than any of the yogurt flavor that usually has me making faces.

When I say it's heavy handed with the strawberry, I'm talking about the way I made strawberry milk as a kid. At least 25% of the glass was strawberry syrup, the rest of was milk.

A similar ratio seems to be at play here. The bar is intensely pink. I don't know who edited the photo on the box, but I can assure you that my bars aren't that washed out despite the fact that I too edit my photos to correct for lighting and other minor issues.

Despite that the shape is correct, but the color is way off, what you have here is a parfait that was heavy handed with the fruit, a handful of granola, and some greek yogurt that were shoved in to molds.

Now, unlike most parfaits where the granola is crisp and crunch, the granola here isn't quite as crisp and is really here to add an extra textural element. For me, this was kind of the weak point in the bar, but no deal breaker either.

Overall

But what I like about these the most is the calorie count. Despite the fact they feel pretty sweet, they've kept most of the sugar in check as they did the calorie count. They kept these bars at a nice even number of 100. Nothing that is going to ruin a diet.

For $2.99 for four bars, Trader Joe's Strawberry Greek Frozen Yogurt Parfait Bars were pretty good. And that is coming from a yogurt hater.

Dessert, Frozen, Trader Joe's Trader Joes, Trader Joes Review

Trader Joe's Shrimp Scampi Lasagna

An unopened box of Trader Joe's Shrimp Scampi Lasagna

When I went to Trader Joe's before 4th of July, I was really there for a different frozen item. I was actually there to pick up the now returning frozen Mac and Cheese Bites (review to be updated soon). But right next to it was an unexpected sight: Trader Joe's Shrimp Scampi Lasagna.

Taste

Priced at $5.99, it is on the higher end of things, but nothing that would break the bank either.

So into my cart, it went. Now, I know the packaging says 3.5 servings. If you are a normal person, this is maybe 2 servings at most.

Unlike some items, I think it is a bit debatable what makes something a lasagna. This qualifies under the most narrow of margins.

Every time I've made lasagna, I layer things until I've pretty much hit the top of the pan.

This seems to be about 2 layers. And when I say layers, I mean this is pretty flat when you plop it on a plate. You have about 3 layers of noodles and in between is an alfredo-like layer and then the scampi layer.

Now the scampi is a bit debatable too. The butter came right through on this as did all the other flavors of a scampi from the wine to the garlic. However, the shrimp seemed chopped finely and seemed to get lost in the breadcrumbs.

But in the end, it was a bit of an oil slick on the plate, and in the pan, it came in.

So while this tasted good, the execution could have been better. And to be clear, I made this in the oven and it did take the full 50 minutes.

I've complained previously that there aren't enough low-carb items out here. But here you also have the foundation of a low-carb dish. If they could have swapped out the pasta, which did not add much in my opinion, with say zucchini, this could have been much better.

Or better yet, make this into a rollatini so when you bite into it you feel like you are getting more layers than you actually are. Or at the very least add a few layers of veggies to balance the richness of this.

Overall

Would I buy this again? While I liked the taste of Trader Joe's Shrimp Scampi Lasagna, the execution of this had me not wanting to buy it again.

  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 tablespoons butter (you'll need 6 tablespoon in total)

Final Thoughts

If salmon had a glow-up, this would be it. Salmon Meunière is elegant, indulgent, and really not as fancy to make as it tastes. That buttery lemon-caper sauce is the kind of thing you'll want to drizzle on everything. Now go put on some good music, pour a glass of white wine, and enjoy the kind of dinner you deserve.

Trader Joe's Mini Gummy Bears on a Chocolate Pool Day

An unopened box of Trader Joe's Mini Gummy Bears on a Chocolate Pool Day

Overall, 2019 has brought us quite a few sweet treats. This is pretty interesting considering I know I have a good number of my readers and friends who are low carb. So, I'm still wondering why Trader Joe's hasn't pushed harder on the low carb front. But nonetheless, there must be a good amount of people out there who have solid sweet tooths. If you are buying Trader Joe's Mini Gummy Bears on a Chocolate Pool Day is just another way Trader Joe's is appealing to those people.

Taste

So here is a completely average chocolate bar assuming you enjoy the combination of white chocolate and dark chocolate.

From the way it is packaged, it looks like a pool.

Remove said chocolate bar from the box and you have a normally shaped chocolate bar with both dark and white chocolate with gummy bears thrown in.

Instead of being cute floating gummy bears, they actually look like they need a life preserver or someone to pull them out of the "pool" as they look to be drowning.

Despite the appearance, the crisp bar and the gummies weren't a texture that had me going back for more.

There weren't many of the gummies and the chocolate just wasn't that great. It wasn't cheap chocolate, but there are some really good brands of white chocolate out there too. This was literally just average.

Overall

For $1.99 it isn't expensive, but there are better options out there for under $2.

Totally worth skipping this summer unless there is a kid in the household who would think this is the coolest thing ever.

Would I buy this again?  Trader Joe's Mini Gummy Bears on Chocolate Pool Day is a no from me. This is just a cute basic bar of chocolate. Nothing special here.
