One of my most frequent snack purchases at Trader Joe's has been their frozen Big Soft pretzels. When that first came out, it was difficult to keep them in the house. My husband and I were eating them like they were going out of style. With a tub of pub cheese no less. Now, I have something new to dip them in: Trader Joe's Honey Pale Ale Mustard.
Taste
Now don't get me wrong, I like pub cheese. But when we eat certain other things honey mustard is a must.
In fact, White Castle's Chicken Rings come to mind. In pretty sure we might have had to equitably distribute the honey mustard packets that come with our take-out order. And if you couldn't tell, we don't do fancy very much.
So, when this hit shelves, I figured it is a lower-calorie alternative to pub cheese, I figured I'd give it a go.
While close, it reminded me of those little packets of White Castle goodness, with some key differences.
Overall tastes more like dijon-style mustard. You get a good amount of honey flavor. The texture is smooth and it will coat whatever you dip into it. Alternatively, this would totally pair well with a protein as well.
As I was eating my pretzel I was totally craving hot dogs with this.
But the one thing that did not come through much was the pale ale flavor. It's the last ingredient, but it was hard to taste through the mustard which overwhelmed it.
Overall
Despite not being able to taste it, it is really well-done honey mustard. Best of all this jar is priced right at $1.99.
Would I buy this again? Trader Joe's Honey Pale Ale Mustard is a solid yes from me. It is a good condiment to keep on hand.

I love mustard and use it in several different ways in cooking. This was OK for the price sorta middle of the road type mustard.
I think it would be good as a coating for baked pork chops. I usually use dijon with a thyme panko crust.
Thanks for your review.

Hey PattiAnn! Thanks so much for stopping by. What's your favorite mustard? Your pork chops do sound delish. Thanks again!

This can be treated like any other mustard in recipes. It's nice change from standard honey mustard.

This was another product that I had picked up in the store and contemplated buying but decided against it for the time being. I am so glad you tried it and did a review on it. I will definitely be buying it in the future. I have a homemade German pretzel recipe that would be a perfect accompaniment for this type of mustard!

I LOVE honey mustard, but avoid it because most have too much sugar for me. Will definitely pick this up, with some chicken sausages and saur kraut this week.
Thanks for the review! I walked right by this last week, without looking at label because i assumed it was full of sugar.

Hey Robin! I hope the review helped you. Also, they now have a no sugar bacon on shelves that I just tested out tonight (didn't write up the review yet), but so far it was good albeit very small. I know a lot of readers are watching their sugar intake. Thanks again for stopping by!

My favorite mustard by far is Sierra Nevada Stoneground Stout. Made with SN beer. On the expensive side and can only find it in one store ( Central Oregon) but wow is it a great mustard!
I have in the past made my own mustard, which is a fun project. Have you tried making your own?
becomebetty says
Hey PattiAnn! Thanks for sharing. I've made many things from scratch, but honey mustard isn't one of those things. I guess it should be simple enough to make. Do you make your own?

My very most favorite mustard and at Trader Joe's here in Albuquerque they no longer carry it.
