Trader Joe's Simpler Wines Rose

Trader Joe's Simpler Wines Rose

I've tried Trader Joe's Simpler Wines in Peach, White, and now Rose. Which did I like the best? Peach bar none. The white was next and the rose was last for me.

Trader Joe's Simpler Wines Rose

Taste

Yes, it's cheap, bubbly, not too sweet, and not too dry. But this one is a touch fruity, but it also tasted as it came out of a can. It is pretty boozy and I found one can sufficient to get a buzz.

Now, I am by no measure a wine snob. Far from it.

It's totally drinkable at a BBQ or at a picnic. But as it cooled in my refrigerator I did not feel compelled to drink more than one at home.

In fact, I haven't touched the cans of white wine either since I reviewed them.

That is usually my sign that I don't like something that much.

But having a wine you aren't crazy about can be such a bummer. Unless you know what to do about it.

That is the case here. As I was sitting down to write this, I began a search to figure out what else I could do with it. Being that we are at the tail end of summer, I came up with Frose.

But sometimes, I'm just not in the mood to go through the steps. I'll go through it for a big batch, but frose is rarely good the next day.

So if anyone reading this is looking for a business idea of things that you really don't see in the grocery store, but should totally be there, here we go. Adult ice pops.

Popsicles- you loved them as a kid. Put some adult flavored liquid in these and you might be the hit of your BBQ, pool party, or sharing where ever that might be acceptable. Or have one heck of a business, just sayin'.

If you don't think this idea would work, then consider the fact that NYC even has its share of bakeries that sell booze-laced products like Prohibition Bakery.

Booze pops need to be a thing. Poptails maybe? The other wording combination just doesn't work. And yes, odds are you might remember those odd-tasting plastic tubes of ice pops from your childhood. I'm not sure what they were supposed to taste like. But these taste better. And they actually do sell the plastic in that same shape on Amazon.

I'm not a big fan of the molds you have to buy. They work, but this is smaller and far more portion-controlled. And the only extra equipment you'll need is a funnel. No extra storage.

They're inexpensive too. But mixed with the right ingredients you can take a meh-tasting wine and really elevate it into something you can look forward to. Two cans yielded me about 17-18 pops.

Overall

For $4.99 it isn't the best tasting rose out there. But it's canned, it's about a buck a can. But if you can find something amazing to do with it, then it's totally worth it. At that price point, there isn't much that does compete with this.

So for me, I now know what I'm doing with my cans of white wine too. And yes, you can get the recipe I tried right here on Mind Over Batter. If you aren't a fan of strawberries it is totally possible you can use other fruit as well.

Would I buy this again? No, but I'm totally making those adult ice pops again. I'll save the Peach wine for drinking and now I have a way to use my white wine.

Trader Joe's Simpler Wines Peach

Trader Joe's Simpler Wines Peach

The pros: Trader Joe's Simpler Wines Peach is the best out of the three canned varieties of Simper Wines. Per can these are super inexpensive.

The cons: Not available in all locations. If your taste buds don't like sweet or anything that tastes like a wine cooler, then skip this one.

Trader Joe's Cold Brew Coffee Ready To Drink

Trader Joe's Cold Brew Coffee bottle

I love my coffee. Dunkin Donut's slogan is pretty spot on. Not only does America run on coffee. So do I. It makes me more energetic, awake, alert, nice, and pleasant.

But there is good coffee and there is bad coffee.

Trader Joe's Cold Brew Coffee bottle

Taste and review

Unfortunately, this fits into the later part of that statement. Let me explain further.

The first cold brew coffee I had from Trader Joe's was their Cold Brew Concentrate. It was good and it's been on shelves a while meaning that people clearly like it too.

Then I tried their Cold Brew Bags and liked that too (with enough brewing time of course).

But this has its flaws. Let's start off with the packaging. I take no issue with the plastic bottle here. But shopping at Trader Joe's has made me a touch of a coffee snob. Most of their coffees on the front are labeled clearly when they are of a single origin.

They also indicate roast. It looks like a medium to medium-dark by the way. On this, they've buried the information on the side of the bottle. It's Colombian.

That brings me to my next issue. I like Colombian coffee. But not Trader Joe's Colombia Coffee. There is nothing really that special about that coffee.

That was echoed in this product. Nothing new, noteworthy, or bold here. Smooth yes, but nothing like most nuanced cold brews. You can enjoy this hot or cold. But the mellow flavor wasn't worth the premium price tag.

Overall

For $4.99 for only three servings this is getting close to the price of that cup of Dunkin Donuts coffee.

However, if you like this coffee or want a cup of coffee that you know what to expect if you are camping or on the road then this might make more sense for you to purchase.

Would I buy this again? No, I would not buy Trader Joe's Cold Brew Coffee again. I'd reach for the concentrate or the cold brew coffee bags first.

Trader Joe's Asian Style Ground Chicken

Trader Joe's Asian Style Ground Chicken package

I love Asian cooking. I just don't want to keep a pantry full of products to make things for myself.

Trader Joe's Asian Style Ground Chicken package

Taste and review

I took a Pad Thai class and was blown away by how many things I would need to keep on shelves to make this one item. So, since I don't make it or make it from scratch regularly, I also don't keep much beyond soy sauce on my pantry shelves.

Maybe the urge to make homemade dumplings or potstickers has hit you. Maybe you've grown tired of Trader Joe's Chile Lime Burgers and need something new to excite your palate.

Enter Trader Joe's Asian Style Ground Chicken.

It's all the flavor you would hope for in an Asian-style marinade. It's complex. It's umami.

Yes, soy is the first flavor that hits your palate. But there is also a slightly tangy flavor. It's a bit sesame, a bit ginger-y, a bit green onion-y, and a whole lot of things that play a harmonious background profile.

It's good.

This ground chicken looks so different from say other ground meats. It's thoroughly marinaded but in a pan, if you aren't breaking it up, you'll have one big patty.

So it would work for no effort burgers or meatballs.

I used mine to pair with fried rice. I was wishing for some wonton wrappers. These would make pretty awesome dumplings.

The only flavor that did not stand out was the "natural rosemary flavor." It was the last ingredient, but it did not stand out. There wasn't any real heat from this, but that can always be added in either during or after the cooking process.

Overall

For $4.49 this is priced in line with most ground meats. It makes for an exceptionally easy meal. While this is chicken, it is not bland in any way. This was another really good pre-marinated chicken option.

Would I buy this again?  Yes, I would buy Trader Joe's Asian Style Ground Chicken again. I have a feeling this one is going to become a staple in my household.

Trader Joe's Beef Cabbage Rolls

An unopened package of Trader Joe's Beef Cabbage Rolls

I was really excited to see Trader Joe's Beef Cabbage Rolls hit store shelves. I love stuffed items. Maybe one day we will see some stuffed peppers. For right now, we will have to settle for these.

So let's go through the negatives here first. Usually, I save these for the end. But this is the order in which I experienced things.

Trader Joe's Beef Cabbage Rolls review

Taste testing

There are only microwave directions. Normally, I like microwavable items, but I'm really really hoping someone out there will be able to come up with some alternate directions.

Now, cabbage is an interesting item. When done right it is delicious. When done wrong, hydrogen sulfide is released into the air alerting all those within smelling distance that something has gone terribly wrong.

Chemical warfare was unleashed after 3 minutes in the microwave.

If you were sharing this with a first date, you can be certain it might be a last date too. If you are married, it might unleash the "Did you just..." "No! It was the cabbage this time" discussion.

If you were making this at work, you will earn the ire of your colleagues. It may even inspire Febreeze to create a new fragrance line called burning sage to put the devil in check. Or make you want to get an EMF reader to make sure the microwave is no longer possessed.

In short, that not-so-pleasant smell of overcooked cabbage came right through in all of its glory. And it shouldn't be that much of a surprise. You have a product that has been cooked, frozen, and then microwaved.

Despite the noxious odor, the texture of the cabbage leaves was a bit lacking. They ran in both directions of mushy and ones that still had some texture to them.

Without the use of red sauce, the aesthetics of this product are lacking. In other words, this product will not win a beauty pageant since they look like brown logs.

So now that I've given you the smell and the visual, I'm sure you are dying to know how they taste.

And yes, I ate all of these. There was one thing that was odd about the ground beef. It wasn't the taste; it was the texture. The ground beef is ground to the consistency of Taco Bell's taco meat.

The filling wasn't bad actually. It was plentiful. The beef was mixed with carrots and onions. The flavor of tomato was there too, but there was also a mild heat as well.

I ended up pairing mine with some of Trader Joe's Marinara with Barolo wine which seemed to bring it back to the type of cabbage rolls that I've had in the past.

Overall

For $4.99 these aren't cheap either. Like a stinky cheese, the bark is far worse than the bite itself. I did eat all of them. But if you can figure out a way to cook these safely, I'd love to hear from you in the comments section.

Would I buy this again? I'd be willing to try these again if someone can come up with a way to cook these so that I don't need to reach for a gas mask. Until then, Trader Joe's Beef Cabbage Rolls probably won't end up in my cart again. The bark was worse than the bite.
