Trader Joe's 4 Cheese Pastry Rolls

Trader Joe's 4 Cheese Pastry Rolls unopened

And after a little break, I'm back with more reviews. A little break does the soul good. And with that, there are some really good (and bad) items hitting shelves. Yes, Trader Joe's 4 Cheese Pastry Rolls are good. But if you follow the directions on the box you are going to not be too happy with this product.

Trader Joe's 4 Cheese Pastry Rolls unopened

The directions

Ok, before I even dive into the taste of this product. The directions are so wrong it isn't even funny. They give you oven directions. That's wonderful. Just pop them into a cold oven and they'll come out perfect, right? Wrong.

Trader Joe's 4 Cheese Pastry Roll per the directions on the box
Visually this looks fine. However, it was doughy and took a long time to actually be cooked through

I have an electric oven. By the time my timer was based on the directions on the box, my oven wasn't even up to temperature. And because of this, I needed to add another 10 minutes to the cooking time. And out of the oven they were just ok. And for those of you with gas ovens, let me know how the directions worked for you in the comments section.

I've had to buy 2 boxes of these to work through the directions. Yes, I've tried letting them rise overnight, cooking them in a pre-heated oven, and finally, the air fryer got the best results each time.

Trader Joe's 4 Cheese Pastry Roll cooked from proofed
Fully proofed. Good, but still wasn't great. Layers were created but not crisp.

Air fryer directions

So in order to get the most out of these preheat your air fryer to 325F. Once pre-heated. Spray the bottom of the tray to ensure nothing sticks. Place 2 in the basket. Cook 10-13 minutes.

This method yields results you can't hope to replicate in your oven.

Trader Joe's 4 Cheese Pastry Roll made in the air fryer
Cooked in the air fryer. 325F for 10-13 minutes. The outside is caramelized and the layers are defined with the top being crisp. While it doesn't look as impressive as the risen one, it tasted the best.

The taste

First, if you remember the now discontinued Trader Joe's Cream Cheese Brioche Pastries, then you might be familiar with the filling used here. If you never got a chance to try those then this is basically a sweetened cream cheese filling. But instead of brioche bread, you are getting what will remind you of a croissant.

Now, if you are following the directions you might be disappointed with this product. I know I was. It had potential when I bit into it but I knew it could have been better. Because my electric oven takes its sweet time with getting to temperature it took 10 extra minutes. It was also very small and dense. I had made 2 this way expecting the directions to work.

Since I had 2 more, I had 1 that I let rise until it doubled in size and the one extra one went into the air fryer.

After letting it rise, it was better, but still was lacking.

Then the air fryer was a revelation. It didn't rise much but the layers were distinct. The only problem was I had put the air fryer up to 350F which was still far too warm. Yes, in 13 minutes mine were close to burnt.

The next box I bought was all air fryer experiments. I found that 325F worked the best. So did preheating your air fryer.

The taste here wasn't as dense. The layers were light and flakey. The top got a nice caramelization which I didn't notice making this the other way. Each bite was delicious. It made a slight mess with each bite with the break flaking off. But there was a nice ratio of filling to bread.

The filling was sweet but just sweet enough to not be off-putting. And again, I didn't even notice the outer layer had a fine layer of sugar which seemed to only caramelize for me in the air fryer at the lower temperature.

But this item is a treat. I just wished someone had tested out the directions a bit more thoroughly. A lot of people may be expressing unnecessary disappointment in the product because the directions might fail them.

Cooked properly, this product was delicious. Following the directions led me to believe this product was just meh.

The packaging

Packaging is minimal here. All four rolls are in the box with no extra plastic packaging.

Overall

Would I buy this again? Yes, I would buy Trader Joe's 4 Cheese Rolls again. For $4.79 these are a solid value and delicious. And yes, the trick here is to make it in the air fryer.

No extra plastic or packaging.

The results are a few different ways:

Trader Joe's 4 Cheese Pastry Rolls compared
1- First attempt in the oven per the directions. It was heavy, doughy, and needed 10 minutes more than the box stated. 2- Allowed to rise and then baked per the directions. Results weren't bad but not a stand out. 3- The air fryer one. You can see the edges have clearly defined layers leading to a better bite. Not as pretty as #2, but the best of the 3.

Trader Joe's Mushroom and Truffle Flavored Pesto

An unopened container of Trader Joe's Mushroom and Truffle flavored pesto

Everything is coming up truffles this year in terms of newer seasonal products. Here is another seasonal offering for $4.99. There is another truffle sauce but you'll need to look in the jarred sauces for that picante. But this pesto is located near the vegan pesto in the refrigerated aisle.

An unopened container of Trader Joe's Mushroom and Truffle flavored pesto

The taste

Last year there was a truffle pesto, but I wasn't wild for it. It wasn't a green pesto either. It was the jarred cashew truffle pesto. But once that touched hot products it had an overwhelming taste of nut butter. Not my thing and I haven't seen it back this year.

This is refrigerated and meant to be enjoyed relatively close to when it is purchased. The first time I had it I wasn't quite sure what to think. I didn't love it yet, I kept eating it.

But the more servings of this I had the more I enjoyed this.

The first thing you'll notice about this is it is quite oily. Without the greens, this is more of a loose pesto. On the flip side, if you wanted to serve this with anything but pasta like for example, eggs, it is easier to add at the very end.

The oil here is both olive oil and truffle flavored oil. So if you were hoping for some chopped-up truffles, you probably aren't getting them for under $5.

But what matters in the end here is taste. And the taste was pretty good although different from many pestos I've had in the past.

First off, the first flavor that hits you is mushroom with a side of truffle. Then all the cheese hits. And since they picked a harder cheese it seems that was the most textural element here. The pine nuts weren't very assertive here. They were chopped quite fine.

This pesto is a whole lot of umami. So if you are looking for something to balance it, then that will need to be in your dish already. It is salty enough to allow the flavor to be pronounced and the mushrooms do announce themselves.

But with pasta, a little went a long way. This package could easily coat a pound of pasta. Always reserve a touch of pasta water that way if you need to thin the sauce out you can.

But overall, this wasn't bad and much better than the cashew pasta of last year. But temper your expectations if you are looking for that pop of truffle. This is also a gentle truffle flavor.

It really is the mushroom and cheese that carry the day here.

The packaging

This is available in a basic plastic container that contains a film over the top to prevent tampering.

Overall

This was pretty good. I actually liked it more and more each time I had it. It isn't something I'd stock up on. But something I would buy a second time.

Would I buy this again? Yes, I would buy Trader Joe's Mushroom and Truffle flavored pesto once again before the season comes to a close.

Trader Joe's Hair Rescue Set

An unopened package of Trader Joe's Hair Rescue Set

Trader Joe's is bringing their A-game to the holiday season. I can tell you for certain I didn't get to Trader Joe's as much as I would have liked last year. But waiting in a line to get in with a tiny human at home just wasn't going to happen. Now that life is a bit different this holiday season the products that this holiday season are bringing us are so very good.

An unopened package of Trader Joe's Hair Rescue Set

Testing this out

Since purchasing this, I've used it twice. Despite the jars being 6 ounces, you don't need all that much product. As an added bonus these two products are a solid complement to one another. A few years back they sold bath bombs which haven't been seen since. So I assume they figure everyone showers instead.

Charcoal and Peppermint Clarifying and Exfoliating Shampoo

If you were thinking this shampoo would be black you are wrong. This shampoo when opened is actually silver. And yes, it will leave your hair squeaky clean. But the neat thing about this is that there are ground-up walnut shells to help exfoliate your scalp. So this is refreshing on many levels.

The smell here is peppermint but there is also tea tree oil that adds to the tingly nature. All of which makes this refreshing.

My hair was nice, clean, and smooth when I used this product.

But a clarifying and exfoliating shampoo isn't what I'd reach for each day. This is something I'd use once or twice a week at most.

My hair is relatively long and past my shoulders but using a reasonable quantity I'll probably be using this for the next 2-3 months.

Deep Moisture and Shine Hair Mask

If you bought Trader Joe's 12 Days of Beauty, I'm pretty sure this is the same hair mask that was found in that set. The only problem with the 12 days of beauty is that sample was large enough for single use.

Now, this container even if your hair is long should get you through at least a month if you are using it once a week.

There wasn't a discernable fragrance here other than the coconut oil found in the conditioner. Now, some of you might be asking yourself, "Is this different than Trader Joe's Coconut Oil and Shea Butter Hair Mask?" And my answer is yes.

When Trader Joe's makes something with new packaging that means there have been some changes. So these are different products. Both are solid in their own right. This product also asks for 5-10 minutes of your time. The other hair mask only asks for 3-5 minutes.

In any case, I didn't have any problems with my hair looking or feeling greasy afterward. And yes, my hair was silky and shiny.

But would I buy this on its own? Absolutely.

The packaging

The packaging here is pretty but functional. The box keeps the two tubs together. The box also allows it to be wrapped up as well.

Overall

This was a solid buy. The exfoliating shampoo was gentle enough to feel good. And yes, the deep conditioner isn't something you'll use every day but it left my hair feeling oh so soft.

Would I buy this again? Yes, I picked up an extra Trader Joe's Hair Rescue Set for the season. This is another item that I would love to see sold year-round.

Trader Joe's Vegan Buttery Spread

An unopened package of Trader Joe's Vegan Buttery Spread

If you've noticed Miyoko's Vegan Butter hasn't been well-stocked lately, then maybe we have an answer for that. Trader Joe's is now making their own buttery spread for $3.99.

An unopened package of Trader Joe's Vegan Buttery Spread

The taste

The first time I had Miyoko's Vegan Butter I was a bit suspicious how it could possibly taste like butter. I tried it and realized that other than the color it was pretty spot on in terms of taste and texture.

In fact, in a blind test, I would be hard-pressed to tell which is which. Now, let's see how Trader Joe's Vegan Buttery Spread compares to that shelf staple.

Color- Miyokos tends to be an off-white color. Trader Joe's went that extra step to make it look like butter too. The color here isn't from turmeric but rather beta carotene.

Texture- I wasn't missing any mouthfeel with either of these products. These are both excellent butter substitutes and there is so little that would lead you to believe they weren't butter. And when I say that since they aren't quite as hard as a stick of butter would be out of the refrigerator both are more comparable to margarine. Not a big deal but a small thing you might notice.

Taste- Now for the all-important detail. They both are very much like the real thing. I had mine on a toasted bagel. And I was pleasantly surprised. It had the look, the taste, and the mouthful all without the dairy.

Spreadability- Trader Joe's is softer than Miyokos out of the refrigerator. Not a big deal but it did make it easier for spreading on. my bagel.

So if you are in the market for non-dairy or vegan butter then this product is solid. But overall, don't think that Trader Joe's is white labeling Miyokos. There are still have some substantial differences between the two.

The packaging

This is basic butter packaging. No cardboard on the outside. It's packaged the way regular butter would be. However, unlike butter, there are no units of measurement.

So while the package mentions you can use it as a 1:1 substitute for butter, those little lines to help the home cook measure would have been a nice addition to the packaging but weren't there.

Overall

Trader Joe's Vegan Buttery Spread is priced in line with other vegan butter. Vegan butter is a better value at Trader Joe's than many mass-market grocery stores as well.

If you buy vegan butter this is pretty good.

Would I buy this again?

Trader Joe's Merry and Bright Skin Care Trio

A unopened box of Trader Joe's Merry and Bright Skin Care Trio

So recently, I updated another returned seasonal favorite: 12 Day of Beauty. 2021 was the best offering of that product so far. And now, with the arrival of Trader Joe's Merry and Bright Skin Care Trio I can now say I'm really excited to get some full-sized products of things I tried and I absolutely adored.

A unopened box of Trader Joe's Merry and Bright Skin Care Trio

The products

So all three products knocked it out of the park for me. I might have passed on this if it haven't been for the 12 Days of Beauty which was in my local stores for what seemed like only a couple of days before being out of stock.

This trio contains three new products:

Vitamin C Serum

When I tried the Vitamin C serum in the 12 Days of Beauty it was hands down my favorite. It smells slightly citrusy. But fragrance aside, I used it every morning for a week and it made my skin feel soft, smooth, and never dry. I had no breakouts from using this. I really hope this appears on shelves as a regular because if you had told me it came Sephora I would have believed you. I'd gladly pay $10 just for this one item.

Glow Face Mask

This is less of a mask and more of a moisturizer. When I applied a thin layer it absorbed right into my skin. I'm sure if I globbed it on then maybe it would need to be wiped off. But treat this as a gentle moisturizer before bed. Again, I had no breakouts after a week of using. There was a slight smell of citrus that my nose could detect on this one. My skin didn't feel oily in the morning. It just seemed to be nice and balanced.

Lip Balm Butter

O...M...G. This was the curveball here. During the winter months here in New York it gets cold and wearing a mask at work all day causes my lips to be very dry. I'm a huge fan of Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask. But I'm no fan of the over $20 price tag. Well, I don't say this lightly but this Trader Joe's Lip Balm Butter is just as good as Laneige. Yes, I said what I said. My lips felt phenomenal after using this and for hours after it had worn off. My lips are very soft and I don't feel the need to reach for my chapsticks during the day. The packaging here is boring and the tube only needs the gentlest amount of pressure to release a more than adequate amount of product. But holy cow, this product knocks it out of the park for me. And yes, this I'd pay the $10 for.

The packaging

So it's gift season, but despite this being a likely gift they did fairly well with minimizing the amount of packaging here.

Overall

I might have bought a couple for myself. And a few for family. But yes, this is probably one of the best sets I've seen in a while.

But let me be honest here, I can only hope after the holiday season we see these products back on shelves individually. This gift set is absolutely worth every penny. Heck, it is even worth picking up an extra one for yourself. I rarely rave about products here, but this is a stellar set for any beauty junkie.

Would I buy this again? Yes, I would buy Trader Joe's Merry and Bright Skin Care Trio if they sold these products individually. And yes, don't be afraid to Treat Yo Self on this one.
