Trader Joe's Green Bean Casserole Bites

An unopened box of Trader Joe's Green Bean Casserole Bites

I'm sure in developing these there was probably a discussion about Green Bean Casserole. But why be basic when you can be extra?

Yup, add some phyllo cups to a classic and you get these appetizers from Trader Joe's just in time for the holiday season.

An unopened box of Trader Joe's Green Bean Casserole Bites

The taste

Casserole. It can be a love-hate thing. I love them, but my mother hates them because that is literally all she ate growing up. Since I never had it growing up there is a bit of novelty to a casserole and I usually only see them around the holidays.

Well here is a creamy and cheesy casserole. The main difference here is that the beans are chopped smaller than they would be otherwise in a normal casserole in order to fit into the tiny little phyllo cups.

I found while making this in the oven that 7 minutes seemed a bit short. I always test things with the shortest time in mind. You can always cook things more, never less.

If you are making these at home I'd recommend that you aim for something closer to 10 minutes. At the 7-minute mark, mine were warmed through but the phyllo would have been so much crisper had it been in the oven for those few extra minutes.

But despite the cooking time issues, the beans were crisp without tasting undercooked and there was no hiding the creaminess of the center of the phyllo cups.

And what green bean casserole wouldn't be complete without some crispy onion topping. This they could have been more generous with. There was a taste of those deliciously seasonal toppings but it wasn't heavy-handed the way I've had most green bean casseroles. It seems more like a fine set of onion sprinkles that landed on my appetizers.

But overall, I think this is a pretty good appetizer. My only complaint is that there are only 10 in a box. And yes, if you eat the whole box it's only 290 calories but these are easy to eat half a box yourself (or the whole box if we are being really honest).

The packaging

Inside the box is a plastic container with holes for each one of the phyllo cups. That tray is in plastic wrap. The plastic tray is not used during the cooking process. The tray does keep the phyllo cups from breaking apart if they were loose. I have a feeling they didn't make an effort to eliminate the plastic here because of the delicate nature of the phyllo cups, it makes the manufacturing process easier, and keeps these intact better than if they were just rattling around inside the box.

Overall

For $3.99 this package is a bit small for my liking. So if you are going to serve this to a crowd you might want to pick up a few of these as there are just 10 bites in each box. The phyllo cups add a nice bit of crunch and you get all the familiar deliciousness

Would I buy this again? Yes, I would buy Trader Joe's Green Bean Casserole Bites again. These were tasty and delicious.

Appetizers, Frozen, Seasonal, Trader Joe's Trader Joes, Trader Joes Review

Trader Joe's 12 Cranberry Orange Bars

An unopened box of Trader Joe's 12 Cranberry Orange Bars

Just when you think there is a classic item, Trader Joe's takes that item and puts a fun spin on it just in time for the holidays.

Behold classic lemon bars in a Fall seasonal flavor: cranberry and orange.

Trader Joe's 12 Cranberry Orange Bars on a blue plate
Some were removed for obvious tasting purposes. Yes, the box had 12 in it.
[feast_advanced_jump_to]

The taste

If you've ever had the outrageous and delicious refrigerated Cranberry Orange Relish that Trader Joe's sells from November until about the New Year then you'll be familiar with the flavor pairings. But these bars actually taste far less sweet than the above-mentioned relish.

If you've ever had Trader Joe's Classic 12 Lemon Bars then you know exactly the format of these classic bars. These have a nice tender shortbread crust at the bottom. There is a subtle sogginess between the two layers but nothing off-putting.

The top is a curd that isn't nearly as sweet as the lemon bars. This has a bit more tang and tartness to it from the cranberries.

Cranberry and oranges were a flavor match made in heaven. The color of these is a bit intense for cranberry. It's almost beet-like in color too. The ingredients mention that there is vegetable coloring involved here. Because the color of these is quite intense.

But despite the use of vegetable food coloring the taste that shines through is the cranberry. The orange is there but as a supporting role. The sweetness is kept in check with these and they are surprisingly not overly sweet.

Each one of these is maybe 2 bites at most. Perfect for guests who "just want a sliver" of whatever is being cut into.

There was a nice ratio of filling to crust here too. The curd is pretty generous but doesn't overwhelm the palate.

These are very well done and quite snackable too. Because these are so small they defrost at room temperature in about an hour so plan accordingly.

The packaging

The packaging is basically identical to that of the classic 12 lemon bars. All the bars are placed on a paper tray. The tray is covered in thin plastic wrap.

Overall

For $4.99 you get 12 bars that defrost in almost no time. These are a solid option to serve (or enjoy by yourself). However, this still doesn't rival the Lemon Bars.

But these are solid on their own and a good item to try. They also won't take up a lot of space in your freezer either.

Would I buy this again? Yes, I might pick up another box of Trader Joe's 12 Cranberry Orange Bars before they are done for the season. I love the size they are and the fact they aren't too cloyingly sweet.

Dessert, Frozen, Seasonal, Trader Joe's Trader Joes, Trader Joes Review

Trader Joe's Caramel Sea Salt Baking Chips Review: Worth Their Salt

Trader Joe's Caramel Sea Salt Baking Chips unopened

If your baking game needs a serious upgrade without breaking the bank, Trader Joe's Caramel Sea Salt Baking Chips are about to become your secret weapon. This seasonal gem blends gooey caramel sweetness with just the right amount of sea salt, all in a compact chip you can toss into everything from cookies to brownies.

Trader Joe's Caramel Sea Salt Baking Chips unopened
This is the new packaging for 2022.
[feast_advanced_jump_to]

Review

These 10-ounce bags of gluten-free chips taste like mini caramel pucks with a salty twist. You can bake them into treats, melt them down into a smooth sauce, or swirl them into ice cream for instant dessert-level vibes.

Opening the bag of these baking chips is like getting hit with a sugar rush. Like caramel air freshener in the best possible way. They smell like that caramel drizzle you always want extra of on your ice cream sundae, but in convenient, chip-sized form.

Popping one in my mouth straight from the bag? Oh, these are sweet with a capital S. It's like a soft caramel candy that's been sprinkled with just enough sea salt to make you reach for another. The salt doesn't overpower. It's that perfect little accent that keeps things interesting. I could definitely snack on these by the handful. (No shame in that game.)

Now, let's talk baking. Fold these chips into cookie dough, and suddenly you're the hero at the bake sale. They melt into gooey caramel pockets that add just the right amount of chew and richness. Brownies? Oh, please. I sprinkled them in, and the result was an ooey-gooey masterpiece. Basically, they make everything you bake feel fancy like you planned it that way all along.

One thing to keep in mind: they are sweet. Like, sweet-sweet. If you're looking for a delicate caramel nuance, these might be too much. But if you're the type who thinks "too sweet" isn't a real thing, you're going to love them.

The only downside? They're seasonal. So when they hit the shelves, it's like a caramel chip stampede. If you see them, grab two bags. Trust me, you'll thank me later.

Maybe someone at Trader Joe's read my review and suggested packaging changes. To which I say thank you since 2021's bag was nearly unreadable.

How to Use

  • Cookies: Fold them into your favorite cookie dough for gooey caramel pockets.
  • Brownies: Sprinkle generously on top or mix into the batter for extra decadence.
  • Ice Cream Topping: Melt and drizzle for instant caramel sauce.
  • Snack Attack: Eat them straight from the bag-no judgment.

Creative Uses

  • Mix into Granola Bars: Add a pop of sweetness and chew.
  • Top Oatmeal: Stir into warm oats for caramel heaven.
  • DIY Snack Mix: Combine with pretzels and nuts for a sweet-and-salty treat.

Trader Joe's Butternut Squash Mac and Cheese Bites Review: Like a Warm Hug… From Someone Who Doesn’t Know You That Well

An unopened box of Trader Joe's Butternut Squash Mac and Cheese Bites

Fall is here, and Trader Joe's knows how to get us in the seasonal spirit with their Butternut Squash Mac and Cheese Bites. Imagine the creamy, cheesy comfort of mac and cheese combined with the sweetness of butternut squash, all wrapped up in a bite-sized, crispy snack. Whether you're looking for a party appetizer or a quick snack, these bites hit all the right notes for cozy fall comfort food.

An unopened box of Trader Joe's Butternut Squash Mac and Cheese Bites

The taste

Trader Joe's Butternut Squash Mac and Cheese Bites come in a 10-ounce box, typically priced around $3.99. These crispy, golden bites are made with a blend of butternut squash puree, a creamy cheese sauce, and elbow macaroni. The outside is breaded and perfectly crunchy, while the inside is rich and cheesy with a subtle sweetness from the butternut squash. They're a seasonal item, which means you'll have to act fast to enjoy them while they're available!

Honest Review of Trader Joe's Butternut Squash Mac and Cheese Bites

Flavor: These bites bring together the best of both worlds: the creamy, cheesy goodness of traditional mac and cheese, paired with the slight sweetness of butternut squash. The squash flavor is subtle, complementing the cheese rather than overpowering it. They have just the right balance of savory and sweet, making them a fun twist on a classic comfort food.

Texture: The contrast between the crispy exterior and the gooey mac and cheese inside is spot-on. The breading crisps up beautifully in the oven or air fryer, while the cheesy filling stays rich and creamy. It's the kind of texture you expect from a well-executed appetizer-crunchy on the outside, soft and melty on the inside. In the oven these were less crisp.

Overall: These bites make for a decent snack, party appetizer, or even a fun side dish. They're easy to prepare and don't take long to cook, making them a quick go-to when you're in the mood for something warm and comforting. The squash was subtle and these were best made in the air fryer. Where I was disappointed in these was that I was expecting this to be a lot more like Trader Joe's Butternut Squash Mac and Cheese which is outstanding and flavorful, these were noticeably more plain.

Frozen, Pasta, Seasonal, Trader Joe's Trader Joes, Trader Joes Review

Trader Joe's Pumpkin Overnight Face Mask

Trader Joe's Pumpkin Overnight Face Mask unopened

Last year Trader Joe's came out with a pumpkin face mask. That product was single-use only. And if you've ever bought one of those disposable face masks you know that they never fit quite right. Now they are selling a face mask in a jar for $6.99

Trader Joe's Pumpkin Overnight Face Mask unopened

Testing this

So maybe you didn't get a chance to try last year's face mask. No worries, but if you have tried the summer's Watermelon Face Mask then this is pretty similar minus fragrance.

Now, let's talk about the fragrance here. This doesn't smell as pumpkin-y ask you might think. In fact, I felt like this smelled like pumpkin with some notes of papaya.

It is a touch orange-hued but don't worry, none of that color transferred onto my skin.

And if you are reading the directions and are concerned, don't worry.

If you are concerned that this is going to mess up your sheets or pillowcase then hear me out. If you apply a thin layer this will dry relatively quickly.

If you apply a thicker layer then give it like 10-15 minutes to absorb and your face will still be relatively moisturized. It will feel a bit tacky but not sticky.

This is really more of a deep moisturizer than a mask. I followed both the overnight directions and the sensitive skin directions.

I used it for about a week.

It was nice. Maybe not a repurchase. Maybe because I have so many moisturizers hanging around my bathroom.

But it was moisturizing. Maybe not something I'd reach for when the humidity is high like it still is here in New York.

Best of all I didn't notice any breakouts from using this several nights in a row. So if that is a concern for you, hopefully, that helps (and hopefully your skin reacts the same way mine did). I also think having to wash your face off either in the morning or after about 10 minutes might have something to do with that as well.

For some reason, I prefer the Watermelon Face Mask over this one. Perhaps it was the fragrance that I liked so much better.

The packaging

This comes in a cute and giftable box. The jar is heavy and glass. It feels more expensive than it actually is. This container has two ounces of product in it which is generous while being priced under $7.

Overall

While this is nice and perhaps even giftable to the person who loves all things pumpkin I think this was a nice one-time purchase.

Would I buy this again? Trader Joe's Pumpkin Overnight Face Mask is a one-and-done for me. I liked it but not enough to buy it again. I'll use it up but won't look for it again if it comes around next season.
