Trader Joe's Ghost Chile BBQ Sauce

An unopened bottle of Trader Joe's Ghost Chile BBQ Sauce

Trader Joe's products sometimes like to play with fire. And when I speak about fire, I am referring to ghost peppers. This is by no means a humble jalapeno; this is many stages past it on the Scoville scale. For perspective's sake, a jalapeno is usually rated somewhere in the 2,500-8,000 Scoville Heat Unit Scale. The assertive Ghost Pepper runs somewhere close to one million on the same scale. So, I cleared my calendar to try Trader Joe's Ghost Chile BBQ Sauce.

Taste and review

Now, I know it sounds dramatic to make sure I am home to try something. But let's be honest, I've seen enough of those YouTube videos of people attempting to eat these types of peppers and have seen the physical effects. So out of an abundance of caution, I stayed at home.

This isn't the only ghost pepper option Trader Joe's sells. They sell ghost pepper chips, seasonal ghost pepper cheese, and even sell a grinder of the stuff. So if you like the hot stuff, they've got you covered.

I like to dip my toes into things like this slowly. So I didn't cook with it. I used it as a dipping sauce.

And I'm glad I did.

Make no mistake, this stuff should be categorized as hot. Plus, this is heat that lingers.

My first observation of this was how thin the sauce is. Perhaps for easy application. It's not thick, but don't let that put your guard down.

Personally, I wouldn't dare cook with this unless you are a complete spice junkie. The heat is tolerable and the flavor of the sauce was able to come through. But cook it and concentrate on it a bit more, no thank you. You'll be dealing with some serious heat.

If you keep this as a dipping or finishing sauce and aren't looking to concentrate it any further, then you'll actually be rewarded with a flavorful sauce.

It's tomato-based but is still on the sweet side as pineapple juice is also part of the base here along with sugar and molasses. I was pleasantly surprised by the fact of how well balanced it is.

The peppers added a decent amount of heat, but because I hadn't made the sauce any more concentrated it was very edible. Of course, this can also double as mild allergy relief as it will likely clear your sinuses in a way that only hot sauce can do.

And to be fair, I'm no spice junkie. I consider a jalapeno to be hot on its own. But the peppers were muted enough that the heat level rises to that of a jalapeno pepper WITH its seeds.

Cook with it, you'll be in a whole new pepper range.

Overall

This is by no means an "everyone should try this" kinda product. But if you like a solid dose of heat and flavor, this is well done.

For $2.69 Trader Joe's Ghost Chile BBQ Sauce is a seasonal offering.

Would I buy this again? I think the one bottle will get me through this summer season, but I hope they offer it again next year. I liked it a lot as a dipping sauce.

Trader Joe's Lemon Meringue Tarte

An unopened box of Trader Joe's Lemon Meringue Tarte

With summer upon us, on my most recent trip I was going to pick up the usual seasonal Key Lime Pie. In New York, this isn't something you can find regularly. Nor can you find it at Trader Joe's. It's summer only. But next to that bright green box was an equally yellow box of Trader Joe's Lemon Meringue Tarte.

An opened box of Trader Joe's Lemon Meringue Tarte

Taste

Now, this product isn't technically new. It's been on shelves previously, but like so many other products, it just hasn't been on shelves in a while.

And as an unofficial rule of shopping at Trader Joe's (just in case you didn't know), if it says "made in France" and it contains bread or pastry, you are pretty safe to assume it is going to be good. I struggle to think of something I didn't like that was made in France.

Now, as far as summer goes, here is a dessert that only requires you to defrost. A big win when it comes to summer and desserts. The less I can have the oven on the better.

If you look at the box, you see a stunningly presented dessert. My hope was that it would come out of the box just as beautifully. Well, to be honest, it was just as impressive coming out of the box as the pictures indicated.

Within about an hour of defrosting I had a slice. If someone had put this on a plate in front of me I would assume that they had made it themselves. It looked homemade.

And then there is the ratio. There is about 1.5-2x as much of the meringue as the lemon filling.

The crust is buttery at cuts through much of the sweetness of the overall dessert. It's not crisp like most pie crusts, but it is more of a contrast to the elements presented.

Despite the calorie (and carb/sugar count), it is sweet, but not cloying. It's tart but nothing that would make you pucker. It's a refreshing palate-cleansing taste that would be a good way to end a meal.

Overall

For $5.99 this is a good one to keep in your freezer for a last minute dessert. Worth stocking up on because I haven't seen this on shelves since 2016 which is quite a hiatus.

Would I buy this again? Yes, I would buy Trader Joe's Lemon Meringue Tarte again. It is beautifully presented considering it is coming out of the freezer, it tastes really good, and would be worth picking up an extra just in case it takes another long vacation.

Trader Joe's Organic Sparkling Apple Cider Drinking Vinegar

Two unopened bottles of Trader Joe's Organic Sparkling Apple Cider Drinking Vinegar

Vacationing in our household is really just about eating in a different city. And drinking for that matter. We pretty much go to different places and just bring back food. When we visited Watkins Glen, NY, and Mystic, Connecticut we saw some sights, but the highlights of our visit were fun little shops. In both of those towns, we found our way to fun shops that only sold Olive Oil and Vinegar. None of it was technically drinking vinegar.

Taste and review

Don't get me wrong. We totally walked around the shops sampling a bit of everything. So yes, we were literally drinking vinegar and taking little mini shots of what would eventually be salad dressing.

So while the vinegar we were sipping on was meant more as a condiment, apparently drinking vinegar is a thing.

So if you are curious, WebMD has an explanation of the benefits and down sides. I leave health related items to the professionals and to you the end user to make the best decisions for you and your health.

So on a basic level, if you know what apple cider vinegar tastes like, this isn't too different. Just add some seltzer to it and you are pretty much there. Both of these drinks are fizzy.

And they come in bottles that I plan on using for some homemade vanilla extract.

But if you can imagine vinegar soda (but not quite as carbonated as soda), you have about 80% of the flavor down. Both are priced at $1.99 and are found in the refrigerated aisle of Trader Joe's.

So here is the breakdown of both flavors.

Cucumber Mint

This is the less assertive of the two flavors because cucumber doesn't have a strong flavor. Here the mint seems to take the lead but also highlights the mild cucumber flavor.

Strawberry and Basil

To me, this was the better of the two flavors. The strawberry with the basil was really natural in flavor and there was just a hint of sweetness to this likely coming from the honey. The balance between strawberry and basil was well done.

Overall

A few sips were sufficient. I didn't love how the extra acidity felt in my stomach. But I know some people absolutely love it.

Would I buy this again? While I personally, can't get into drinking vinegar, Trader Joe's Organic Sparkling Apple Cider Drinking Vinegars did taste as good as can be expected. It's not something I would repurchase, but if you are into these, they are pretty good.

Drinks, Organic, Refrigerated, Trader Joe's Trader Joes, Trader Joes Review

Trader Joe's Honey Pale Ale Mustard

An unopened jar of Trader Joe's Honey Pale Ale Mustard on a marble background

One of my most frequent snack purchases at Trader Joe's has been their frozen Big Soft pretzels. When that first came out, it was difficult to keep them in the house. My husband and I were eating them like they were going out of style. With a tub of pub cheese no less. Now, I have something new to dip them in: Trader Joe's Honey Pale Ale Mustard.

An unopened jar of Trader Joe's Honey Pale Ale Mustard

Taste

Now don't get me wrong, I like pub cheese. But when we eat certain other things honey mustard is a must.

In fact, White Castle's Chicken Rings come to mind. In pretty sure we might have had to equitably distribute the honey mustard packets that come with our take-out order. And if you couldn't tell, we don't do fancy very much.

So, when this hit shelves, I figured it is a lower-calorie alternative to pub cheese, I figured I'd give it a go.

While close, it reminded me of those little packets of White Castle goodness, with some key differences.

Overall tastes more like dijon-style mustard. You get a good amount of honey flavor. The texture is smooth and it will coat whatever you dip into it. Alternatively, this would totally pair well with a protein as well.

As I was eating my pretzel I was totally craving hot dogs with this.

But the one thing that did not come through much was the pale ale flavor. It's the last ingredient, but it was hard to taste through the mustard which overwhelmed it.

Overall

Despite not being able to taste it, it is really well-done honey mustard. Best of all this jar is priced right at $1.99.

Would I buy this again? Trader Joe's Honey Pale Ale Mustard is a solid yes from me. It is a good condiment to keep on hand.
