Trader Joe's Spicy Shrimp Appetizer Duo

An unopened box of Trader Joe's Spicy Shrimp Appetizer Duo

For about a month, I've been putting together a list of the worst things I've had from Trader Joe's. If this wasn't seasonal, it would make the list. How bad was it? Well, the conversation in my household went something like this:

"How was lunch, honey?" my husband asked me.

"I'm making a new one," I responded.

"Why?" he inquired.

"This was the biggest Trader No's I've had in a while." "Seriously?" "Seriously."

Taste

Not since the Beef Cabbage Rolls and the Carrot Cake Spread did I feel such instant negativity.

I usually like all things Asian-inspired at Trader Joe's. There are honestly a few things I disliked.

And then I had this box.

Now, when I saw these, I thought these were the replacement for the Shrimp and Salmon Trio of last year which was pretty good.

But Trader Joe's likes to mix things up from time to time. Since the previously mentioned item was pretty good, I didn't hesitate to pick these up.

I mean, I like the Lemongrass Chicken Stix, so why wouldn't I like these?

Well for starters, for two things that are supposed to taste different, the feeling seemed very similar. It was the same notes of shrimp and spice.

But the wontons were overpoweringly lemongrass-y. I felt like I was chomping on the herb itself. Then there was a problem with cooking the wonton. They were cooked on either end but managed to be soft on the equator-like line that developed when you flip over food.

And then there were the shrimp rolls, while shrimp was up there in the filling ingredients, the flavor was buried under all the other flavors. As an added detractor, these seemed fishier than usual. I know shrimp is shrimp, but it didn't have that familiar freshness to it.

So these were three-note appetizers: fishy, spicy, and greasy. All the kiss of death in my book. Even though I didn't have breakfast and was starving by the time I cracked into these, I had no desire to push myself beyond eating one of each. That was even a stretch.

I managed to have one of each, before returning them to their rightful place: in the trash can.

And while some form of sauce is pictured here, it's only a serving suggestion. There is no sauce that would bring some balance to these.

Overall

For $4.99 this was probably my least favorite appetizer I've tried this year.

Trader Joe's Black Truffle Alfredo Pasta Sauce

An unopened jar of Trader Joe's Black Truffle Alfredo Pasta Sauce and a bag of unopened Organic Italian Garganelli

Behold, a two for one review. While most of this will center around the new and seasonal Black Truffle, I made it with the new seasonal pasta, Garganelli. Which by the way, looks a lot like a candy cane color. But for right now, truffle seems to be the flavor of the winter time. And there is no shortage of it.

Pin for Trader Joe's Black Truffle Alfredo review

Taste

Now, I got excited when I first saw this, but then got disappointed, but then got excited again.

So let me clarify that statement. Truffle is a love it or leave it type of flavor. So I'm going to approach this as someone who clearly likes the flavor.

So I was excited to see it. My disappointment kicked in when I read through the ingredients. But the second I ignored the ingredients and let my taste buds do the talking and fact-finding, then I became happy again.

You see, I will make own alfredo, but I've also had Trader Joe's Alfredo too. For something that comes out of a jar, it isn't bad. It doesn't come close to homemade, but it is nowhere near the inedible jarred varieties that are found on grocery store shelves.

But the ingredients had me solidly worried. The first ingredient is water. Not usually a good sign in most sauces.

But upon opening this, I was hit with the truffle aroma. Lots of black specs could be seen across the sauce.

So, I boiled up the new Garganelli which is very pretty dry, but is quite faded once cooked. Most of the natural coloring was left behind in the pasta water. But it was decent enough (read I'll try and pay for it just once).

I opted for that pasta because it was 1) seasonal, 2) has ridges which is perfect for sauces and 3) I didn't feel like writing a separate review saying "it tastes like pasta."

While on looks alone, the star was the pasta, on taste it was all about the sauce. Which considering my hesitation based on the first ingredient was pretty good.

The sauce is thick so go easy and add if it isn't coated enough. If you can get past the fact that water is added (as is a thickening blend) and look further down the ingredient list, you have all the familiar flavors found in a good alfredo.

The truffle is pronounced without being overwhelming. If you feel it is too mellow, then the addition of Trader Joe's Black Truffle Butter or Trader Joe's Truffle Salt would bump this up a notch.

Overall

For $3.99 this is an affordable luxurious flavor (assuming you like this polarizing flavor). But it is a seasonal item, so if you find that you enjoy it, then you should pick up an extra jar or two as this will likely be gone for the season.

And if that is the case, you could always make your own with the addition of the Black Truffle Butter and Truffle Salt. The truffle butter freezes well and the truffle salt will last a long time.

The pasta here is the new Garganelli which is priced at $2.99. And if you notice the dry color compared to the cooked ones, it faded quite a bit. The directions were on point though.

Would I buy this again? The pasta I'd skip, but I'd reach for another jar of the sauce to get me through the winter months when an alfredo tastes best.

Trader Joe's Vegan Jackfruit Cakes

Cookie Butter had its year. I'm pretty sure 2018 was the year of Cauliflower. Are we seeing Jackfruit as the food item of the year for 2019? Perhaps, but time will tell. And it will all be based on how good the products coming out are. But for right now, there is now an additional frozen item that has jackfruit in it.

Pinterest Image for Trader Joe's Vegan Jackfruit Cakes review

Taste

This time last year, Trader Joe's introduced the Yellow Jackfruit Curry, prior to that they added canned jackfruit. So the options seem to be slowly expanding. Unlike cookie butter or cauliflower, there are lots of people who might be unfamiliar with jackfruit.

While it's called jackfruit it isn't sweet, so don't let the word fruit fool you. Some people compare the texture to pulled pork.

I'd agree with that assessment of the texture, but say the taste is closer to artichoke. Or at least in this application.

The last time I had them, it was with curry so it was more of an assertive flavor.

This, however, seeks to be the meatless answer to Trader Joe's Crab Cakes. These are also much cheaper. One box of two crab cakes would set you back $6.99, however, this one box of vegan jackfruit cakes costs $3.99 and contains four cakes.

And for a meatless solution, it's pretty good. But don't expect this to taste like crab.

Here you have the familiar elements of a crab cake: a breading and filling.

I treated mine like crab cakes and enjoyed them the same way. They weren't bad. And the package of four made for a filling meal with a reasonable calorie count.

But there were a few differences. These seemed a bit greasy and they were a bit gummy in terms of the exterior. But as a substitute, for real crab cakes they did a good job mimicking the flavors.

Based on the ingredients, these are not only vegan (which is labeled), but they seem to be gluten-free as well (which is not labeled as being such).

Overall

Not a bad option. The taste isn't crabby and if you go into it expecting more of an artichoke flavor, then you might enjoy these. It made for a nice meatless dinner.

Would I buy this again? Yes, I'd buy this again, but I'd also buy the crab cakes too.

Trader Joe's Bath Fizzers Set

An unopened package of Trader Joe's Bath Fizzers Set

If you are thinking about doing some holiday shopping at Trader Joe's, then perhaps skip the sweets and start looking in the health and beauty aisle. This year there seems to be no shortage of new and fun items. This bath fizzers set is one of the new items I was excited to get into.

Pinterest image for Trader Joe's Bath Fizzers Set

Testing this

In real life, I'm a girly girl. My husband doesn't quite know the extent of my Sephora shopping. My makeup collection is kept in various gallon-sized plastic bags based on what the product is.

So this year, I'm going to get to the gifts that are meant to be enjoyed. That way if you'll know you need to pick up an extra one. For giving. Or yourself. No judgment.

So needless to say, my bathroom has a record amount of product in it. Yes, I also have this year's sugar scrub set, body butter trio, macaron soap, face mask trio, lip therapy duo, and moisturizing hand creams.

So, this week it's been nothing but straight-up self-care. For me, that means a bath.

Now, in a full tub, these bath bombs fizz up like a giant Alka-Seltzer. Kinda fun to watch.

Each individual bath bomb has its own fragrance. I've gotten into the rose petal and floral fantasy. The rose seemed more assertive in fragrance than the floral fantasy.

Both were pleasant but not overwhelming. Those who have a sensitivity to smells might not agree. But the fragrance did seem to linger on my skin after bath time was over.

As far as taking an aromatherapy bath, it was nice and something to look forward to. These seemed mildly moisturizing as they do contain oils which this time of year is always appreciated.

Unlike some bath bombs, clean-up is straightforward. There are no dyes or glitter in these.

And when you compare them to a company like Lush, a similar-sized bath bomb will set you back $5.95 (more for the larger ones). And yes, I said one. Single. Bath Bomb is almost $6. For $6.99 you are getting four bombs and you won't have to worry about colors or glitter in your tub when you are done.

Overall

Would I like this as a gift? Yes! I'm totally gifting myself another box or two of these. Would it be a good gift for someone? Yes. The fragrances are more on the girly side so just be aware. But anyone who enjoys a good soak in the tub would probably like this. And yes, this makes my gift guide if you are getting items at Trader Joe's.

If you can't find this at your local Trader Joe's, then you might be able to find this through third-party sellers on Amazon.

Trader Joe's Crispy Vegetable Pouches Review: She’s Not Like Other Snacks, She Has a Handle

Trader Joe's Crispy Vegetable Pouches unopened package

Imagine tiny fried veggie bundles that look fancy but taste like childhood spring rolls on vacation. That's Trader Joe's Crispy Vegetable Pouches. These belong on appetizer platters or anytime you want to feel fancy without effort. Press play on the air fryer, grab your dipping sauce, and prepare for crunch bliss.

Review

Frozen bite-sized pouches filled with jicama, taro, cabbage, carrot, onion, shiitake mushrooms, and garlic chives. Seasoned with garlic, ginger, soy sauce, red chili, sesame oil, and ginger, then wrapped in a flour-based skin for deep-fry escape artist vibes. Vegan, dairy-free, and meant for 15 minutes in the oven or 7 minutes at 400°F in the air fryer.

I didn't expect these to be as good as they are. Honestly, I threw them into the cart with low expectations. I mean, how exciting can a pouch of vegetables be? But wow, these crispy little guys came to impress.

The outer shell is what dreams are made of: golden, crunchy, and doesn't get soggy in five minutes like some frozen snacks do. The air fryer is definitely the move here. It crisps up the wrapper to that perfect delicate shatter when you bite in like you're crunching into a very polite cracker that doesn't stab the roof of your mouth.

Inside is a cozy, savory filling of cabbage, carrot, taro, shiitake mushrooms, and garlic chives that taste like they were just stir-fried minutes ago. The garlic and ginger flavors are strong in the best way. You get a punch of umami from the soy and sesame oil, a slight zip of chili, and enough texture from the veggies that it doesn't just feel like mush.

Each bite is well-balanced-nothing dominates, nothing feels like filler. Even the taro, which can sometimes be weirdly starchy, blends right in. It's almost like an herbaceous veggie dumpling that went to culinary school and graduated with honors.

Now let's talk portion. The box says "2.5 servings," which is hilarious. If you're sharing this, you're stronger than me. The truth is, these go fast. Blink, and the pouch is empty, and you're left staring at your air fryer, wondering how many bags you can justify buying next time.

Flavor-wise, they're more interesting than a plain spring roll, more satisfying than your average vegan app, and way more exciting than they have any right to be. They're salty-yes. A little oily? Maybe. But in a totally indulgent, Friday-night-treat kind of way. They feel like something you'd get at a trendy vegan café trying to do upscale dim sum.

Pair them with a good dipping sauce and a glass of something bubbly, and you've got yourself a snack that doesn't feel like a compromise. These veggie pouches are low-key bougie without being fussy.

Bottom line? I'd grab a backup box next time. They're too good not to have on hand for sudden snack cravings or surprise guests.
