Review of Trader Joe's Macarons

Trader Joe's 6 Chocolate and 6 Vanilla French Macarons box

There are times company comes by expectedly or without any warning. Whatever the case is, there are handy items to keep in the freezer if you are just having a cup of tea and want something sweet. Be warned, if you are not familiar with macarons, they are light and somewhat sweet, they are not made with regular flour like most cookies, they are made with almond flour. So if you have a nut allergy, steer clear.

Trader Joe's carries several varieties. Vanilla and Chocolate are sold in packages of 12 containing six of each flavor. Don't look for them in the cookie aisle either. They're in the freezer section (all varieties are kept together). But there have been the following seasonal varieties as well:

  • Heart Shaped Macarons
  • Watermelon and Peach
  • Raspberry, Vanilla, and Blueberry

Here is the quick rundown of what you get in each variety. Let's start with Trader Joe's 6 Chocolate and 6 Vanilla French Macarons.

Trader Joe’s Seafood Paella Review: Sounds Fancy, But Is It Actually Good?

Trader Joe's Seafood Paella bag

Paella is a classic Spanish dish that combines seafood, rice, and vibrant spices to create a satisfying and hearty meal. But what if you don't have the time (or ingredients) to make paella from scratch? Enter Trader Joe's Seafood Paella, a convenient frozen meal that aims to deliver the essence of this beloved dish.

What is Trader Joe's Seafood Paella?

Trader Joe's Seafood Paella is a frozen dish that combines Spanish-style rice with a variety of seafood, including shrimp, mussels, and squid. It's an affordable option priced at $4.99 for a 16-ounce bag, offering a quick way to enjoy paella at home without the labor-intensive cooking process. This frozen meal includes a small yet generous amount of seafood for a frozen entrée and captures the classic flavors of saffron, garlic, and paprika that are typical of traditional paella.

Quality as of late has been inconsistent and at times tastes a bit fishy in a not great way. Some bags I've purchased were solid, more recent ones weren't as good as compared to when I first reviewed this item.

Tasting Notes and Texture

As a frozen meal, Trader Joe's Seafood Paella delivers a surprisingly authentic flavor. The rice is tender but not mushy, and the saffron-infused seasoning provides warmth and depth. The seafood holds up well after cooking, with the shrimp being firm, the mussels briny, and the squid surprisingly tender (not rubbery as you might expect from frozen squid). The vegetables, while not overly abundant, add a bit of crunch and color to the dish.

While this paella won't replace a homemade version or one from a high-end restaurant, it's a solid choice for a quick weeknight meal.

Trader Joe's Seafood Paella contains:

  • Seafood: Shrimp, mussels, and squid.
  • Rice: Spanish-style short-grain rice, pre-seasoned with a blend of spices like saffron, paprika, and garlic.
  • Vegetables: Peas, red bell peppers, and onions, which add color and texture to the dish.

Nutritional Information (per serving):

  • Calories: 220
  • Fat: 4.5g
  • Sodium: 460mg
  • Carbohydrates: 29g

This meal is relatively low in calories and fat, but the sodium content is on the higher side-something to keep in mind if you're watching your salt intake.

How to Prepare Trader Joe's Seafood Paella

Preparing Trader Joe's Seafood Paella is simple and doesn't require any special equipment. Follow these steps for the best results:

  1. Stovetop Instructions: Heat 1 tablespoon of oil in a large pan over medium-high heat. Add the frozen paella to the pan and cover with a lid. Cook for 4 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  2. Uncover and Cook: After 4 minutes, remove the lid and continue cooking for an additional 2-3 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the seafood is fully cooked and the rice is heated through and the shrimp are opaque.
  3. Optional: If you prefer a crispier texture (similar to the traditional socarrat at the bottom of a paella pan), let the paella cook undisturbed for an extra minute or two at the end.

Serving Suggestions

While Trader Joe's Seafood Paella is a meal on its own, here are a few ideas to enhance your experience:

  1. Serve with Fresh Lemon Wedges: Adding a squeeze of fresh lemon juice over the paella brightens the flavors and adds a nice contrast to the richness of the seafood and spices.
  2. Side Salad: Pair the paella with a simple green salad with a light vinaigrette. A mix of arugula, cherry tomatoes, and shaved Parmesan would complement the dish nicely.
  3. Garlic Bread or Crusty Baguette: A side of garlic bread or a crusty baguette will help soak up the flavorful sauce and any leftover juices from the seafood.

Pairing Suggestions

Wine:
Paella pairs wonderfully with a crisp white wine or a light rosé. A Spanish Albariño or a French Rosé would complement the seafood and saffron notes without overwhelming the dish.

Beer:
A light, refreshing lager or pilsner works well with the bold flavors of the paella. For a more authentic pairing, try a Spanish cerveza like Estrella Galicia.

Trader Joe's Chicken Tikka Masala nutritional information, ingredients, and how to prepare

Quick History of Chicken Tikka Masala

Chicken Tikka Masala is a dish that has become synonymous with Indian cuisine, but its exact origins are a bit of a mystery and often debated and may surprise you.

One popular theory suggests that Chicken Tikka Masala originated in the UK in the 1960s. According to this story, a Bangladeshi chef in a British curry house created the dish to appease a customer who found the chicken tikka (grilled marinated chicken) too dry. The chef reportedly improvised by adding a creamy tomato sauce to the dish, thus giving birth to what is now known as Chicken Tikka Masala.

Another theory traces its roots back to the Indian subcontinent, where similar dishes, such as "murgh makhani" (butter chicken), were already being made with marinated grilled chicken in a spiced tomato sauce.

Regardless of its exact origin, Chicken Tikka Masala became widely popular in the UK and beyond, often cited as one of Britain's most beloved dishes. It has come to symbolize a fusion of Indian flavors with Western preferences, particularly due to its mild spice level and creamy texture, making it accessible to a wide range of palates.

How to Cook Trader Joe's Chicken Tikka Masala

This meal is designed for quick preparation:

  • Microwave: Heat for 3-4 minutes on high. Stir and ensure it's heated thoroughly before serving.
  • Oven: Although the packaging suggests microwaving, some people prefer to reheat this meal in the oven for a crispier texture and richer flavor.

Pairing Suggestions

Below is a quick list of items you can serve with this in order to make it a more hearty meal:

  1. Naan bread- Soft, pillowy naan is a classic accompaniment to Chicken Tikka Masala. It's perfect for scooping up the flavorful sauce. Trader Joe's sells frozen naan that you can quickly heat up for a restaurant-like experience at home.
  2. Samosas- These crispy, savory pastries filled with spiced potatoes, peas, or lentils are a great appetizer or side dish. Trader Joe's also sells frozen mini samosas that can complement the meal.
  3. Roasted or steamed vegetables- like cauliflower, carrots, and green beans make for a healthy, light pairing. They add a nice crunch and complement the richness of the sauce.

Frequently Asked Questions

Below is a list of frequently asked questions about this product

How spicy is Trader Joe's Chicken Tikka Masala?

The spice level is mild to medium. It's flavorful with traditional Indian spices, but it won't overwhelm those sensitive to heat.

Is the portion size filling?

The portion size is generally considered satisfying for one person, with enough protein and carbs to make it a filling meal. However, larger appetites might want to pair it with a side or additional protein.

Does Trader Joe's offer other Indian-inspired frozen meals?

Yes, Trader Joe's offers a variety of Indian-inspired frozen meals, such as Butter Chicken, Paneer Tikka Masala, and Vegetable Biryani.

Conclusion

While this can easily be made from the microwave this comes out as good if not better than some of the Indian Restaurants I've eaten at. This is a perennial favorite and it should be no surprise.

Trader Joe's Chicken Tikka Masala is a great option when you're in the mood for Indian-inspired flavors but short on time. It's not a perfect replica of the restaurant version, but for a frozen meal, it delivers solid taste and convenience at an affordable price. If you're looking for a quick meal fix that's both filling and flavorful, this is worth keeping stocked in your freezer.

If you've never tried Indian, then this is a really good gateway to trying out this flavorful cuisine. Most of the frozen Indian items I highly recommend.

Trader Joe’s Paneer Tikka Masala: Frozen Favorite or Forgettable?

An unopened box of Trader Joe's Paneer Tikka Masala box on a green background

If you're a fan of Indian cuisine but looking for a vegetarian alternative, Trader Joe's Paneer Tikka Masala is a freezer staple worth trying. With its mildly spiced, creamy tomato sauce and soft cubes of paneer, this dish delivers both taste and convenience. For only $2.99, it offers great value, especially compared to the chicken version. But how does it compare to other options, and what are some creative ways to elevate this meal?

Trader Joe's Paneer Tikka Masala
[feast_advanced_jump_to]

What is Trader Joe's Paneer Tikka Masala?

Trader Joe's Paneer Tikka Masala is a frozen Indian-inspired meal featuring cubes of paneer (a pressed, non-melting cheese) in a rich, creamy, and mildly spiced tomato-based sauce. The dish comes with fragrant spinach basmati rice, which pairs nicely with the sauce and provides a bit of extra flavor compared to plain basmati rice. At 430 calories per serving, it makes for a satisfying yet light meal option.

Tasting Notes and Texture

The paneer is soft, chewy, and absorbs the flavors of the tikka masala sauce well. If you've never had paneer, think of it as the most tender chicken you've ever had-except it's cheese! The sauce has a great balance of spices and creaminess, and the spinach basmati rice adds an extra layer of texture and flavor. This dish isn't overly spicy, which makes it approachable for those who enjoy Indian flavors without intense heat.

Trader Joe's Paneer Tikka Masala box on a green background

Directions

You can make this in the microwave by heating it on high for 2-3 minutes. Stir and then return to the microwave for another 60 to 90 seconds. This can also be made in the oven. Preheat your oven to 375F, place this on a baking sheet, and heat for 20-25 minutes.

Both yield a delicious dish, but the microwave option works well if you are at work. If the microwaving option would be frowned upon because of all the spices here, then another reasonable option would be to look into getting a Crockpot Lunch Box and heating this up with a lid.

Creative Uses for Trader Joe's Paneer Tikka Masala

While Trader Joe's Paneer Tikka Masala is satisfying on its own, you can also get creative with it to turn it into a more robust meal:

Paneer Tikka Masala Over Roasted Vegetables

Paneer Tikka Masala Pizza
Use the paneer tikka masala as a pizza topping! Spread it over a pre-baked naan or pizza crust, top with some shredded mozzarella, and bake until bubbly. Garnish with cilantro for an Indian-inspired pizza.

Conclusion

A solid single-serve meal option in the freezer section. Minimal effort and maximal taste. The spinach rice is a standout here too. I do wish there was a bit more of it to go with the dish. Reasonably priced and not too hot to appeal to more people. This is a regular purchase in my household.

Trader Joe's Shrimp Tacos

It's completely possible that you have relied on a freezer meal at least once or twice in your life. I've eaten things like Lean Cuisines and SmartOnes in an effort to deal with both laziness, not packing a lunch regularly, not wanting to go out to lunch and not wanting to spend $10 on lunch. Yes, even a lazy dinner can be added to this list.

Now, Trader Joe's Shrimp Tacos were awesome, but I will warn you, they are a bit misleading if you go by the picture alone....
