Trader Joe’s Gnocchi alla Sorrentina

14 · Jan 22, 2019 · 5 Comments

An unopened bag of Trader Joe's Gnocchi alla Sorrentina

Confession time:  It’s the second time in two days I’ve been to Trader Joes, forgive me, I went on a Sunday and it seems like food was going out of fashion, especially in the frozen section.  I wasn’t actually there for this product.  I was actually looking for Trader Joe’s Sweet Potato Gnocchi with Butter and Sage.

I adored it.

But like many things at Trader Joe’s they like to tease you with great items and come back and try something new every time.  So, this is my new bag of gnocchi: Trader Joe’s Gnocchi alla Sorrentina.  In plain English it’s regular gnocchi with tomato sauce and some cheese….

Trader Joe's Black Tiger Shrimp

The pros: Trader Joe’s Black Tiger Shrimp are large shrimp that are only around for the holiday season.

The cons:  This product might not be ideal for those where having six shrimp would not suffice. This is priced at almost $10 for half a pound. While some might complain about the price, these are very big shrimp.

The pros:  Trader Joe’s Butternut Squash Zig Zags are refrigerated, fresh, delicious, and a great substitute for real fries.

Trader Joe’s Cauliflower Pizza Crust

7 · May 18, 2017 · Updated October 29, 2018 · 10 Comments

Trader Joe's Cauliflower Pizza Crust

The pros:  Trader Joe’s Cauliflower Pizza Crust is a good tasting and healthy alternative to regular pizza crust. This product is also gluten free.

The cons:  This is more expensive than buying pizza dough or fresh pizza crust or frozen pizza crust from Trader Joe’s. There is only one crust per box. Allergy information says there may be traces of milk which is a bummer for vegans out there.

Trader Joe's Peppered Turkey Bacon

The pros:  Trader Joe’s Peppered Turkey Bacon is a thicker cut and more peppered variation of Trader Joe’s Uncured Turkey Bacon. It was meaty, smoky, and only 40 calories per slice.

The cons:  There are no directions for cooking this in the oven which is unusual as their other varieties of bacon do have these directions.

Trader Joe’s Thai Sweet Chili Veggie Burger

8 · Mar 22, 2017 · Updated October 29, 2018 · 2 Comments

Trader Joe's Thai Sweet Chili Veggie Burger

The pros:  Trader Joe’s Thai Sweet Chili Veggie Burger is an Asian spin on their other veggie burgers. Was tasty out of the frying pan. Heat is subtle but present. Trader Joe’s Thai Sweet Chili Burger had enough oil in the burger to cook it without oil in a pan.

The cons:  If you are looking for that fake meat flavor, you are out of luck here.

Trader Joe’s Canneles de Bordeaux

3 · Mar 20, 2017 · Updated October 29, 2018 · Leave a Comment

Trader Joe's Canneles De Bordeaux

The pros: Trader Joe’s Canneles de Bordeaux is respectable in calories. Reminded me of a creme brulee with it’s caramelized outside (but no crunch here) and custard filling. I enjoyed this more heated slightly in the microwave than cooled.

The cons:  These dessert are small so plan accordingly. You’ll finish each in about four bites.

Trader Joe’s Soy Chorizo

15 · Mar 6, 2017 · Updated October 29, 2018 · 4 Comments

Trader Joes Soy Chorizo

The pros:  Trader Joe’s Soy Chorizo is spicy, tasty and happens to be vegan and gluten free and inexpensive at $1.99.

The cons:  If you are looking for it to hold it’s sausage shape you will be disappointed. Meat lovers will miss exactly two things about this “sausage:” the casing and the fact that this really isn’t sausage and will not hold itself together. Might be a bit spicy for some. Will leave that familiar red grease stain anywhere the chorizo touches.

Trader Joe's Strawberry Raspberry Oatmeal container

The pros:  With milk, Trader Joe’s Strawberry Raspberry Oatmeal is a tasty and hearty breakfast. Best at room temperature. Good flavor and balance. Subtle spice of cinnamon. Good amount of fiber to make you feel full.

The cons:  Could have been more generous with the strawberries and raspberries. I wish it had a lid, so if I need to come back to it. Something you can make from home with a few pantry items. If you have allergies, this has a long list of items it has traces of.

Dieting at Trader Joe’s: 1500 Calories a Day

8 · Dec 30, 2016 · Updated October 29, 2018 · Leave a Comment

Dieting at Trader Joe's: 500 calorie meals and under.

So you’ve made a New Years Resolution. Perhaps you realize summer will be here eventually. Perhaps for health or personal reasons you realize that it’s time to drop a few pounds. There are plenty of diet programs out there. One I’m most critical of is Jenny Craig. Not that it’s a bad program, but it’s expensive. It also goes against the philosophy of “Give a man a fish, you feed him for a day, teach a man to fish you feed him for a lifetime.” You are never really taught how to cook. Plus their food is quite expensive and some can even be confused with pet food visually. Since adding time to a set 24 hour day isn’t going to happen, you may need to rely on certain things being already made for you. Maybe it will give you time back in your day or give you just a few more minutes at the gym. So I’ve pulled together of (most) of my reviews and complied a calorie count for each item if you plan on Dieting at Trader Joe’s….

Trader Joe’s Wasabi Seaweed Snack

3 · Dec 13, 2016 · Updated October 29, 2018 · 1 Comment

Trader Joe's Wasabi Roasted Seaweed Snack

The pros:  Trader Joe’s Wasabi Seaweed Snack is salty, spicy, slightly nutty snack. If you’ve had these at your local Asian market, they are basically the same thing, just with a nice wasabi coating that wasn’t overpowering and won’t clear your sinuses.

The cons: Seaweed taste might not be for everyone.

Trader Joe’s Greens, Beans, and Grains

3 · Dec 4, 2016 · Updated October 29, 2018 · Leave a Comment

The pros:  Trader Joe’s Greens, Beans, and Grains is a tasty entrée that would make a light lunch of dinner, yet filling enough to be a whole meal. Cooked perfectly in the microwave and was ready in about 6 minutes. Medium heat so be warned.

The cons:  I felt after eating this there was the lingering aftertaste of garlic. Not everyone will enjoy cilantro (I liked it) as for some people they are tasting something soapy.
