Trader Joe's Shampoo Bar

An unopened package of Trader Joe's Shampoo Bar

It's September and I'm getting back in the swing of things. New routines, new beginnings, and the beginning of my favorite time of year at Trader Joe's: Holiday Season. While the pumpkin/fall items aren't slated to land until the 7th (although some are starting to...hello pumpkin empanadas), I've finally got a chance to catch up on some reviews.

Testing this

But if you are looking to cut down on your impact, or just hate lugging bottles of stuff around then Trader Joe's Shampoo bar should be a welcome addition.

Now, if you live alone, please disregard what I'm about to say. If you live in a household of more than 1, please be advised that you should probably warn people about this. It looks like a bar of soap. That being said, I put it into the shower area not thinking anything of it.

My husband came to me complaining about the bar making him feel overly tingly in various places. A sensation he wasn't expecting. I had a good chuckle at his expense.

And yes, the shampoo bar has tea tree oil and peppermint so there is that refreshing feeling and aroma to this bar. And while the directions say to more or less wet the bar and rub it on your scalp. I found it easier to get a little lather in my hands and then rub the suds into my hair.

In either case, it was a pretty good shampoo minus the bottle. I didn't find it too drying, but at the end of the day, this might be better for people whose hair is more oily. I'd still want to use conditioner after this bar, but it seemed pretty on par with regular shampoo minus all the extra water.

Frequently asked questions

The following questions are commonly asked by readers about this product

Does Trader Joe's sell shampoo bars?

Yes, Trader Joe's sells shampoo bars. They are sold as a 4-ounce bar and cost $3.99.

Is Trader Joe's shampoo bar good?

As long as you enjoy the tingly sensation of Tea Tree oil then yes your hair will be clean after using this.

Overall

Now, in terms of price this 4-ounce bar will set you back $3.99, which is actually a pretty good deal when compared to Lush. While they have way more varieties, their shampoo bars start at $12 but are under 2 ounces in size. Which makes these a pretty solid value.

Would I buy this again? Yes, I would buy Trader Joe's Shampoo Bar again.

Non Food Items, Trader Joe's Trader Joes, Trader Joes Review

Trader Joe's Walnut Pesto

An unopened package of Trader Joe's Walnut Pesto

When I think of pesto, I tend to think green. But technically a pesto is really just a paste. Or at least a series of ingredients that has been broken down into a paste. So this container didn't exactly jump out at me at first.

An unopened package of Trader Joe's Walnut Pesto

Taste

And normally I take a lot more pictures.

But let's be honest, there are some foods that just don't photograph well. Most recently, the Chocolate Gnocchi comes to mind.

While this isn't nearly as terrible to photograph, it did remind me mildly of my son's dirty diapers: sort of a brownish color with a seedy texture.

So now that I've completely ruined your appetite, I'm happy to tell you that the taste here did not match the visuals.

As terrible and unappealing as this product is to look at, it is pretty good in terms of taste.

It's nutty and cheesy at the same time. And it tastes quite salty as well. It's not your typical pesto. It's basically a mix of nuts, oil, and cheese. No greens here.

But it is quite good spread on a sandwich which is how I enjoyed it. I imagine it would be good on pasta as well.

Normally I complain about serving sizes. Usually, I complain they are far too small. Here you would need to consume a quarter cup. And that quarter cup is calorie heavy at 370 per serving. Spread on a sandwich you can expect probably half those calories. But if you are having pasta, I can't say the same is going to be true. But if you are looking to cut back, then reserve some pasta water to thin this down.

Overall

Despite its terrible appearance, this is pretty good with the biggest drawback being the salty taste.

For $3.79 it's not a bad item to pick up, especially if you are getting tired of Trader Joe's Kale Cashew and Basil Pesto or just want a change. But just be aware this isn't vegan.

Would I buy this again? Yes, I would buy Trader Joe's Walnut Pesto again. It was different and quite tasty.

Condiments, Refrigerated, Trader Joe's Trader Joes, Trader Joes Review

Trader Joe's All Natural Heirloom Whole Chicken

An unopened package of Trader Joe's All Natural Heirloom Whole Chicken

So every now and again I like to pick up an item that seemingly no one is talking about. This is a product I had to do a bit more research into to see if there is a bit of a difference. From everything I've put together, most commercial chickens are raised quite quickly. Heirloom on the other hand supposedly tastes more like the way chicken did a long time ago (before even I was born in the 1980s). They are smaller and have spent their lives in a pasture.

Taste

For $2.99 per pound, this is much cheaper than other heirloom chicken I've seen referenced. The bummer here is that it doesn't reference what type of breed it might be. If you are interested in learning more about breeds, you can check out this article by Modern Farmer.

To be fair, I consider myself to be a decent enough home cook. So I opted to keep this simple to see if there was a detectable difference.

When I say simple, I also have to warn you, because this is slow growth chicken, there is a bit more muscle here, so you'll have to cook this slower.

I kept things pretty standard at 350F. This chicken weighed just about 3 lbs so that was about an hour in the oven with be stopping at 45 minutes to brush the fat that had rendered onto the skin. At the end of the hour and a quick temperature check, there was a very necessary 10-minute rest.

Prepping this was pretty standard: I dried it with a paper towel and generously salted and peppered the skin. I also used a whole lemon, halved, and put that in the cavity to put the bird more upright and will lend a mild citrus flavor, and ensure more even heat distribution.

Otherwise, what came out of the oven was moist and had more chicken flavor than regular chicken. Yes, it still tastes like chicken. The breast meat had a much more pronounced flavor than regular chicken cutlets which I oftentimes feel are pretty close to flavorless.

So if you've been curious about one of these birds, don't be afraid of it. But if you are more culinarily adventurous, there are no giblets to neck to speak of in this package.

Frequently asked questions

Below are common reader questions about this product

Does Trader Joe's sell heirloom chicken?

Yes, they do. They are sold right next to the regular and organic whole birds in the refrigerated case.

What is a Trader Joe's heirloom chicken?

Heirloom chicken refers to breeds of chicken that live outdoors, are slow growing, and are often smaller than conventionally sold chicken

Overall

Overall, worth a try. In terms of availability, I would check with your local store. Prior to Father's Day, there was a Cowboy Ribeye only in certain locations. So whether or not this is available across all stores is a bit unclear.

Would I buy this again? Yes, I would buy Trader Joe's All Natural Heirloom Whole Chicken again. Even though there was a slight premium it was worth it. Just don't expect those huge chicken breasts, this is a more evenly proportioned bird.

Trader Joe's Sparkling Black Tea with Peach Juice

An unopened box of Trader Joe's Sparkling Black Tea with Peach Juice

If I had one drug of choice it would be Diet Coke. To me there is nothing quite like the carbonation and the artificial sweetness that doesn't make me go, "yuck." Is it healthy for me? Probably not, but we all have our vices. But in truth, my vice probably is really carbonation.

An unopened box of Trader Joe's Sparkling Black Tea with Peach Juice

The taste

Because I can go weeks without Diet Coke. But I'll need a seltzer instead.

I just love fizzy things.

So when I see a new bubbly drink, I have to have it.

And this won hands down has the prettiest packaging in the land. I did walk past it a couple of times because with black packaging it doesn't draw your eye in the same way a whole shelf of brightly colored drinks does.

Truth be told, I probably would have missed it on the shelf had I not had someone suggest I try it.

Well aside from pretty packaging, this product is just ok. If you've ever had Celestial Seasonings Country Peach Passion, then this is pretty close.

With the addition of 15 calories.

The key difference here is that this isn't peach-flavored tea. This has peach juice in it. Just not much of it.

A peach tea will yield more peach flavor here. And if you are somehow hoping or Snapple levels of sweetness, you'll be disappointed.

Each can is a reasonable amount of calories even though they are small. But it is very much black tea with a hint of peach.

And then there is the price. It was $3.99 for four cans. A bit steep (pun intended) in my mind for a can of just over 8 ounces.

Overall

Would I buy this again? While this was pleasant enough and didn't have many bad qualities, it didn't wow me. So I won't buy Trader Joe's Sparkling Black Tea with Peach Juice again.

Drinks, Trader Joe's Trader Joes, Trader Joes Review

Trader Joe's Strawberry Lemon Sugar Scrub

An unopened container of Trader Joe's Strawberry Lemon Sugar Scrub

As a new mom, an exhausted human being, and as someone who has pretty much been shut in since March, here is a product that is much welcomed in the Trader Joe's lineup. Albeit, a seasonal product.

An unopened container of Trader Joe's Strawberry Lemon Sugar Scrub

The packaging

But in this tube is a really solid scrub. It is quite different from the tube of ultra-moisturizing hand cream. That was all strawberries in scent.

The product

This is all strawberry lemonade.

But when you scrub yourself down you'll probably want a greywater system.

Why?

Because the abrasive material here is more than just the sugar, it's the strawberry seeds.

And they're pretty big those strawberry seeds.

When you look towards your drain you'll see that there was the potential for an entire garden there. If it wasn't already July in New York I might start the experiment to see if this would grow from just the residue in the shower.

Overall

But overall, in terms of exfoliation, this does a great job.

But if you are looking for the addition of moisturizing, then you'll want to skip this and grab the Lavender Salt Scrub. But if you seek aromatherapy of a fruity kind then this is a solid item to buy.

For $5.99 it is a fun item to try but doesn't have the same value that the 20-ounce salt scrub does.

Would I buy this again? Yes, I would buy Trader Joe's Strawberry Lemon Sugar Scrub but I'd rather reach for the lavender one since it is a better value.
