Trader Joe’s Ube Mochi Pancake and Waffle Mix Review: Chewy, Sweet, and Purple in the Best Way

An unopened box of Trader Joe's Ube Mochi Pancake Mix on a light surface

Trader Joe's Ube Mochi Pancake and Waffle Mix is one of those quirky, colorful products that catches your eye and makes you wonder: will this taste as good as it looks?

Made with rice flour and purple yam (ube), this mix promises a chewy, mochi-like texture and just the right amount of sweetness. At $3.99 per box, it's gluten-free and made to be different.

An unopened box of Trader Joe's Ube Mochi Pancake Mix on a light surface

Review

Let me start with this: if you're expecting traditional pancakes, this mix will surprise you, in a good way.

The batter comes together easily with just eggs, milk, and butter. As it cooks, it smells subtly sweet and nutty, and the purple color really pops (yes, they stay purple after cooking). But the real surprise comes when you take a bite: the texture is chewy, slightly bouncy, and dense in the best mochi-inspired way. It's not fluffy like a diner pancake, and it's not supposed to be.

The flavor is mellow. You get a hint of vanilla and a little nuttiness from the ube, but it's not overly sugary or artificial-tasting. That gives you room to play, whether you top it with syrup, fruit, or even use it as a base for dessert pancakes with ice cream and coconut flakes.

I also made waffles with this mix, and the results were just as chewy and crispy around the edges. They held their shape well and felt like a more indulgent version of breakfast.

Bottom line: if you love mochi, boba, or chewy textures in your food, this is a fun twist on pancakes and waffles. If you're more of a "fluffy stack with whipped cream" person, it may not be your thing, but I think it's worth trying at least once. Otherwise, stick with Trader Joe's Buttermilk Pancake Mix for a more traditional flavor.

Final Thoughts

Trader Joe's Ube Mochi Pancake and Waffle Mix is one of those playful, offbeat products that makes Trader Joe's…well, Trader Joe's. It's not your everyday pancake mix, and that's exactly the point. If you enjoy chewy textures, mildly sweet flavors, and want something a little different to serve at brunch or dessert, this mix is worth picking up.

It's fun, unique, and totally Insta-worthy as long as you don't expect it to behave like Bisquick.

Trader Joe's Ube Ice Cream

An unopened container of Trader Joe's Ube Ice Cream

For the last year, I've seen various people post videos and pictures of purple-hued desserts. And now Trader Joe's Ube Ice Cream is available for a limited time Those confections weren't all artificially colored. Nope, they were made from a tuber called Ube.

An unopened container of Trader Joe's Ube Ice Cream

Review

Now, this isn't a comparison between brands of any sort. I've only seen maybe another brand or two of ube flavor on shelves at my local H-Mart.

Nope, this review will only focus on Trader Joe's take on Ube Ice Cream.

The first thing I noticed is that this Ube is more of a lilac hue rather than the intense purple that I've seen elsewhere. Likewise, the taste of the ube is subtle as well.

Trader Joe's uses puree to get the flavor of the ube. Many other companies use ube purple yam extract which will yield a far more purple product in terms of both color and taste.

The next thing I noticed after trying this was how hard it is to describe what Ube tastes like. It isn't a classically sweet flavor. At best it's like a cross between vanilla and pistachio with hints of coconut. If you've ever been to a restaurant where flavors like Red Bean or Green Tea are offered, it's pretty close in sweetness to those flavors.

And while I've had green tea and red bean ice cream in sushi restaurants, ube is a staple dessert item in the Philippines to which the purple yam is used quite a bit.

And those flavors it is really the ice cream base that is driving the sweetness. So minus the sweetness, what you are left with is a lightly nutty-tasting base.

And speaking of the base, I'm sorry to disappoint those of you who are dairy-free. This is a classic ice cream base with cream and eggs. However, if you are team dairy-free then the new almond ice cream is pretty solid.

Other ube products

Trader Joe's has carefully branded their ube line and they have used similar packaging on all of them. Unfortunately, none of the ube products is available year-round. So far the ube products that have been offered are:

  • Ube Mochi
  • Ube Tea Cookies
  • Ube Mochi Pancake and Waffle Mix
  • Ube Yogurt Covered Pretzels

Frequently asked questions

The following are common reader questions about this product

Does Trader Joe's sell ube ice cream?

Yes, however the ube ice cream is available seasonally at the end of spring and early summer.

What does Trader Joe's Ube ice cream taste like?

Trader Joe's ube ice cream is a custard based ice cream with ube puree. If you've never had ube then it is like vanilla and pistachio.

Overall

For $2.99 this is reasonably priced but be warned, this appeared last summer and disappeared with the season. So if you love it, I'd stock up because it seems to only appear in the summertime.

Would I buy this again? For me, Trader Joe's Ube Ice Cream is a once-a-year purchase. I enjoy it, but there are other flavors I enjoy more.

Trader Joe's Steamed Pork and Ginger Soup Dumplings Review: Sip, Slurp, Smile, Repeat

An unopened box of Trader Joe's Steamed Pork and Ginger Soup Dumplings

Soup dumplings are that comfort blanket of the culinary world, an artful dance of dumpling, broth, and filling. If you've craved that joy but dreaded the effort, Trader Joe's Steamed Pork & Ginger Soup Dumplings might just be your savior. With nostalgic vibes and a steamable shortcut, these freezer finds aim to bring dumpling magic to your kitchen, minus any restaurant lines.

[feast_advanced_jump_to]

Review

Inside the bag you'll find a dozen cute little dumplings, each carefully wrapped so you get a pocket of soup waiting inside. The filling is a blend of ground pork, ginger, and onion, wrapped in a thin-but-plush dough. Steaming them takes about 8 to 10 minutes, and that broth builds magic as you wait.

For a while now, Trader Joe's has sold their Chicken Soup Dumplings. It's one of those reliable items that you know will be on the shelf.

Aside from a plethora of dumpling options. The soup dumplings are a completely different experience. And if you have some time on your hands and have Amazon Prime, then check out Emril's Eat the World episode two, where he goes to China in search of soup dumplings.

What I learned was there is quite a bit of variety and variation among soup dumplings, especially the show's focus on Xiao Long Bao. But one of the things they also learn is how to eat these properly. Even this little purple box makes mention of it.

Because these are served very hot, there is nothing like a hot blast of broth in the mouth to sever your taste buds. So yes, read the directions on this one.

Also, take advantage of the really well-thought-out packaging. There are little areas for a sauce of your choosing to be placed in that will minimize the number of dishes you'll need to do afterward.

I tried making them in the microwave. They're a smidge soggy or gummy, but otherwise, they're pretty darn good. The filling is a delicious blend of pork with a nice bite of ginger. Green onion, soy sauce, and sesame oil round out most of the flavor here.

FAQs about Trader Joe's Steamed Pork and Ginger Soup Dumplings

The following are commonly asked questions about this product:

Do I need to thaw them first?

Nope, go straight from freezer to steamer-no thawing, no hassle.

Do they stick together?

A little space in the steamer helps, but they generally come out perfect.

Can I microwave them?

You can, but they're best when steamed with nicer texture and intact broth.

Final Thoughts

If you dream of soup dumplings without the restaurant hustle, Trader Joe's Pork & Ginger Soup Dumplings are a solid pick. With gentle ginger warmth, a luscious broth pocket, and easy steaming magic, they bring fast comfort with depth. They may not blow your socks off like Michelin-level dumplings, but they'll satisfy those dumpling cravings with ease. Just don't forget the dipping sauce and don't pack them too tightly in the steamer.

Trader Joe's Watermelon Face Mist

An unopened bottle of Trader Joe's Watermelon Facial Mist on a white surface

Well, if having a watermelon mask is too hydrating as we move into the warmer months, then perhaps just a mist will be sufficient. Because if you read my review of the watermelon mask, then you know I compared it to Glow Recipe's watermelon mask. However, this too might have certain similarities to another product.

An unopened bottle of Trader Joe's Watermelon Facial Mist on a white surface

Testing this

Now, Glow Recipe also has another product that on some levels seems very similar. They also sell a Watermelon Mist. However, I haven't tried that product, so I can't compare them. However, if you have, I'd love to hear from you in the comments.

This product does separate so you'll have to give it a good shake before applying. The packaging is not an expensive feeling but totally plays off of the watermelon theme. But for me, what matters is what is in the package.

Now, this is no ultra-fine mist but is on par with any other spritz bottle. What comes out of the bottle is a mist of light watermelon fragranced hydration. Nothing that will fully hydrate. Just more of a pick-me-up.

And since the weather is getting warmer, if you leave this in your refrigerator you will be rewarded with a cool mist.

But if this is something that you'll leave in your purse or by a sink, then it is perfectly fine at room temperature. And yes, it is mildly moisturizing. But don't think

It is similar to Trader Joe's Rose Water Toner which I really like. However, if I had to pick a quick moisturizer then I actually prefer this product.

Overall

The only bad part is this is listed as being a limited-run product. This is sad because this does belong in the regular rotation of health and beauty products.

For $3.99 this is worth a try, especially in the summer months where you might just want a little pick me up but nothing that feels heavy or greasy.

If you can't find this at your local Trader Joe's, then you can probably find it on Amazon through third-party sellers.

Would I buy this again? Yes, I would buy Trader Joe's Watermelon Facial Mist again.

Trader Joe's Watermelon Overnight Face Mask Review: A Slice of Summer, One Sleep at a Time

An unopened box of Trader Joe's Watermelon Overnight Face Mask on a white surface

I love trying new products from Trader Joe's. The ones I enjoy trying the most aren't actually edible. They're actually the ones from the health and beauty aisle. They're different and I love to see how they compare to some of the more expensive items I've accumulated and if I can cut some of those expensive items out of my routine.

An unopened box of Trader Joe's Watermelon Overnight Face Mask on a white surface
[feast_advanced_jump_to]

A quick comparison

The closest product I've tried to this is Glow Recipe's Watermelon Mask. Now for a similar-sized product, you would spend nearly $40 on a jar of similar size. Trader Joe's variety sells for only $6.99.

Now, are they duplicates? In short no. They are similar, but not the same. First off, it didn't make my skin feel peel-y in the same way the Glow Recipe's formula did. Both however have a Jolly Rancher type of watermelon fragrance going for them. The Glow Recipe's formula has a pink hue to it, however, there is no coloring here.

Review

I peeled back the box and found a delightfully thick gel-cream-think candlelight romantic with smoothie vibes. It spreads beautifully without sliding off, thanks to that lotion-like texture. Imagine your favorite moisturizer but served with a watermelon twist.

That scent is a soft, sweet melon whisper-not that over-the-top candy aroma that gives you a headache. I've seen comments online comparing it to a Jolly Rancher, but it's way more subtle and sophisticated-basically a spa-like mini-vacay in a jar.

Applying it feels cool and refreshing, especially after a hot shower. It tingles ever so gently-not enough to sting, just enough to say, "Yep, this is working." As it soaks in, there's a slight sticky residue for a few minutes, but it settles down faster than a seasonal tantrum.

Come morning, my skin feels plumped, hydrated, and soft. No drama, no redness, no peeling-just calm, healthy morning skin. Not exactly glass-skin shiny like $40 saviors, but a clean, hydrated canvas that's glow-worthy without being over the top.

The packaging screams summer and happiness, and at around $6.99, it's a wallet-friendly treat-even if it isn't your "big reveal" mask. Bonus: it's more hydrating than some luxe versions and holds its own in results. So unless you're chasing ultra-expensive square-meter face farms, it's a solid alternative.

If you can't find this at your local store, then you can probably find it through third-party sellers on Amazon.
