Trader Joe's A Mid Summers Nights Cream

An unopened bottle of Trader Joe's A Mid Summers Nights Cream Hand and Body Cream

If 2020 has taught us anything, then it is toilet paper is clearly as valuable as gold. Given everything going on, it is surprising that things like hand soap and lotion don't seem to have the same value as good old toilet paper. If logic were running things, then there would have been lines miles long just for Bath and Body Works products like hand soap and hand sanitizer.

More about this product

But logic isn't running things this year. And Trader Joe's A Mid Summers Nights Cream Hand and Body Cream isn't technically a new product. This was released several years ago but has not returned to shelves until recently. Unfortunately, since I didn't try it the last time this was on the shelf I can't compare it against the original release. That is what the comment section is for if you did try it.

Like the popular Organic Argan Oil, this is moisturizing and doesn't have much of a fragrance to speak of.

Testing it out

What is nice about this lotion is that is it fragrance-free. And after washing my hands far more than I normally wash them, this is a welcomed step for afterward. It isn't nearly as hydrating as the  Ultra-Moisturizing lotion products that are often found in tubes. But this seemed to get the job done.

However, the highlight for me is the price. This item costs just $3.99 for a 16-ounce bottle which seems like a pretty solid deal. Best of all, a quick glance through the ingredient list makes it pretty clear they were looking to keep this lotion more on the natural side with all the oils present in this.

But, did I find myself using this more than once to keep my hands hydrated? Yes. But I'll blame that on all the handwashing. I hope everyone out there is staying safe and healthy.

Overall

Would I buy this again? Yes, I would buy Trader Joe's A Mid Summers Nights Cream Hand and Body Cream again. It was a really nice addition to my hand washing routine.

Did you try it?  Let me know what you think in the comments section!

Trader Joe's Organic Light Brown Sugar Review: Unrefined and a Little Extra

Trader Joe's Organic Brown Sugar

Trader Joe's Organic Light Brown Sugar comes in a 24-ounce resealable bag and is priced at $3.49. Sitting between traditional light and dark brown sugars, it offers a rich molasses flavor and larger-than-average crystals. This organic option is a versatile pantry staple for baking, cooking, and sweetening beverages.

Trader Joe's Organic Brown Sugar
[feast_advanced_jump_to]

Review

If Goldilocks were into baking, she'd declare this brown sugar "just right." It doesn't quite fit the mold of standard light brown sugar-it's a bit darker and packs a more pronounced molasses punch. The larger crystals give it a unique texture, making it a standout choice for certain recipes.

In cookies, it imparts a delightful chewiness and depth of flavor. However, the coarse texture might pose challenges in recipes requiring creaming with butter, as some bakers have noted difficulties achieving a smooth mixture. Measuring by weight can help mitigate this issue.

The resealable bag is a thoughtful touch, but the sugar's tendency to clump can interfere with the seal. Transferring the sugar to an airtight container or adding a terra cotta disc can help maintain its softness.

Overall, Trader Joe's Organic Light Brown Sugar is a flavorful, affordable option for those seeking an organic sweetener with character.

Trader Joe's Kitchen Garden Scented Candle Collection

An unopened package of Trader Joe's Kitchen Garden Scented Candle Collection

On my last trip to Trader Joe's (more than 10 days ago), I was fortunate enough to come across something that had just landed on shelves. I figured if I was going to be stuck in the house for an indeterminate amount of time, I would do so in total comfort. And in my world that meant spending nearly $10 on Trader Joe's Kitchen Garden Scented Candle Collection.

An unopened package of Trader Joe's Kitchen Garden Scented Candle Collection

Testing this out

With grocery trips more spread out, you can be sure my final tab was much higher than usual. No more mini-midweek trips for me at this point. Most importantly, going less often means the lines will be shorter for other people who need to get to the store.

Despite waiting in line for all of 15 minutes on a line that looked way worse than it actually was, the store was well-stocked for the middle of the afternoon run. The only thing that was absent from shelves was toilet paper.

Hoping to stock up for a few upcoming at-home spa days until things return to normalcy, I found a new set of candles.

Around the holidays, there was a really well-done set of candles that were a limited run. The scents were all solid. But most importantly, I enjoyed having the set and wouldn't have minded if more candle sets hit shelves.

So, I guess maybe they listened.

This set is different from the other set. These are soy candles and these come in glass jars instead of metal ones. And the scents here are all kitchen, or at least garden-inspired.

Each and every one of these scents reminded me of bringing home fresh herbs or at least of what you might grow if you have a garden.

These don't have a lot of throw in terms of aroma. So they'll only go about as far as the room they are placed in.

But for small candles, they do seem to burn quite a while.

And pardon the description here, but you know that scene in the original Charlie and the Chocolate Factory where Willie Wonka has the wallpaper that tastes like the fruit. Well, pretty much the lemongrass really smells like fresh lemongrass, the fresh mint really smells like fresh mint (not like candy one bit), and the tomato leaf really smells more like the plant itself than the tomato.

Personally, I preferred the lemongrass and mint. The tomato leaf wasn't quite what I would reach for in a candle.

So, if your favorite candle store is currently closed and won't be open anytime soon, then consider this a good substitute.

Everything here is garden fresh without any artificial smelling aromas.

Overall

For $9.99 it's not bad value but isn't cheap either. But keep in mind, a lot of candles have one major problem: they all seem to not burn every ounce of scented wax when the wick is gone. So if that annoys you to no end, then I recommend getting a candle warmer. That way you can get every last drop of aroma out of your candles.

Would I buy this again? While I personally prefer citrus candles, Trader Joe's Kitchen Garden Scented Candle Collection wasn't a bad set to have under the circumstances.

Trader Joe’s Creamy Spinach Artichoke Dip Review: A Freezer Find That Delivers on Creamy Comfort

An unopened box of Trader Joe's Creamy Spinach and Artichoke Dip

I love a good dip like Trader Joe's Spinach and Artichoke Dip. A dip is something that I usually order as an appetizer when I go out to eat. But sometimes there are quiet nights where we just watch TV, Netflix, or a movie on DVD. So we make ourselves a couple of drinks and enjoy snack food rather than a real meal. Of all the dips I've tried Trader Joe's Spinach and Artichoke Dip is my favorite. Pick up a few of these if you are having company or watching the game.

[feast_advanced_jump_to]

Review

Trader Joe's has no shortage of party dips, but if you're looking for something warm, creamy, and classic, their Spinach Artichoke Dip might already be in your freezer. It's sold in a compact frozen block that transforms into a hot, melty dip with just a few minutes in the microwave or oven.

At $3.79 for an almost 9-oz container, it's one of those underrated freezer finds that's perfect for last-minute snacks, appetizers, or even a solo comfort-food moment.

Let me start by saying this: I wasn't expecting much from a frozen spinach dip, but Trader Joe's version is surprisingly good, especially for the price and convenience.

Once heated, the texture turns into what you'd hope for: rich, creamy, and just cheesy enough without being greasy. The spinach is soft but not mushy, and the artichokes give it a little tang and texture. I appreciated that it didn't taste overly salty or artificial. It has that just-right balance of savory, slightly garlicky, and indulgent without being too heavy.

The portion is small, this isn't a crowd-sized dip, but more of a "snack for two" or "I don't feel like cooking" kind of item. I microwaved it and gave it a good stir halfway through, and the consistency was smooth and scoopable, without any weird clumps.

I've also tried baking it in a ramekin for a little browning on top, and it absolutely works if you want to elevate it a bit. Add a sprinkle of parmesan and serve with crackers, crostini, or tortilla chips, and you've got a warm appetizer that feels like it took more effort than it did.

Trader Joe's Harissa Flavored Chicken Thighs

An unopened package of Trader Joe's Harissa Flavored Chicken Thighs

On my most recent trip, I found this bag of newly marinated meat. And I have to be honest, I really like the Chicken Shawarma. It has such a nice blend of flavor it seems to be pretty consistent in terms of quality. So my hope is that these would be just as just albeit spicy chicken thighs as well.

An unopened package of Trader Joe's Harissa Flavored Chicken Thighs

Taste

Now, if you've ever looked around the hot sauces at Trader Joe's, there is a pretty innocuous-looking glass jar of Harissa Paste. But, it is for spice junkies only. If you've ever had the privilege of going go to the Halal Guys, it is pretty similar to the red sauce they carefully portion out. When they ask how many lines you'd like, you better have a strong stomach because that red sauce is pure fire.

The jar of Harissa paste is pretty darn similar.

However, this harissa flavor has been toned down for mere mortals.

It's mild to medium depending on how much of the marinade you decide to leave on.

Now as a rule of thumb, I always cut up any chicken thighs I buy further to ensure more even cooking. I find that some of the thighs in this package are very different in size. And again, I like to avoid undercooked chicken at all costs.

I opted to use high heat in a frying pan for this.

The end result here for me was mixed.

Was the chicken moist and tender? Oh yes. Very much so.

How was the flavor? Not great.

Harissa has a fabulous flavor all on its own. But when you have something that is super flavorful and adds more flavor to it, you sometimes end up subtracting.

For me, the fatal flaw here is Trader Joe's over usage of rosemary. It may be the last ingredient listed, but it came through in the worst possible way.

It was like listening to a choir of soprano voices but the only instrument playing was a tuba. It just didn't work, which in this case is a real shame.

It was a clash that I couldn't find a way to embrace or enjoy. So after half of a chicken thigh, I bid this adieu straight to my garbage can.

Overall

For $7.54 or $4.99 per pound, I won't be repurchasing these anytime soon. But if you are looking for pre-marinated meats that are of good flavor then look for the Pollo Asado or Chicken Shawarma.
