Trader Joe's Sweet and Spicy Mango Vinaigrette

Trader Joe's Sweet and Spicy Mango Vinaigrette bottle

Some dressings in the refrigerated aisle are outstanding. Others might be to be repurposed as something other than a salad dressing. This might fall into the latter category.

Trader Joe's Sweet and Spicy Mango Vinaigrette

Taste and review

I like fruit flavors. Even in a salad. I'm pretty sure that when I had the Melting Pot's Strawberry Salad it was a bit of a revelation to me.

Fruit and salad work.

But in terms of salad, this dressing did not work for me. And it's not a bad product.

If the name were more accurate it would read Sweet Mango and Cilantro Vinaigrette. Because the two dominant flavors were mango and cilantro.

This dressing just never departed from being sweet. Beyond mango being the second ingredient, sugar was the fourth. I was hoping for some type of kick that just did not come through here.

Now, there is another odd detail here. It lists suggested uses, but salad is actually the last suggestion. Suggestions for using this include noodle salad, dipping sauce for pork or chicken, or lastly salad (with chicken).

Overall

So it would appear that this is a better compliment for a protein than lettuce.

After a few bites of the salad I had, I'm very inclined to agree. It seems to be less vinaigrette and more marinade or dipping sauce.

So if you have a great use for this, I'd love to hear about it in the comments section. It was too cloyingly sweet as a dressing. The cilantro and acidity levels were nice.

For $3.49 whether or not you like this will depend on how you use it. I'd recommend pairing this with a protein to cut through the sweetness. I wasn't wild enough about to try it on anything else.

Trader Joe's Joe Coffee

Trader Joe's Joe Coffee bag

Coffee. It's my favorite part of the day. It relaxes me. It makes my day get started. Heck, there are times I have a nice cuppa before bed. But, it better be good coffee where I want to get to the bottom of the cup. Some coffees, you just let them sit in their mug getting cold. On purpose.

 Trader Joe's Joe Coffee

Taste and review

I've always found coffee reviews to be the hardest to sit down and write. It's hard to come up with that many words to describe my favorite morning beverage.

But, I think I've come up with a pretty fair analogy on how this tastes.

I want you to think of the last hotel you were in where there was a coffee maker in the room. Not the one where they might have a continental breakfast. And not one with a Keurig brewer either.

You know the coffee makers that make anywhere from 1-3 cups of coffee on one pre-filled sealed coffee filter with the grounds in the middle. Those pods are usually sealed in a plastic bag that makes the weakest coffee imaginable. Even if you brew a single mug.

I mean these are the types of coffee that would drive you out of a room to find real coffee. They're bad enough that they will force you to get dressed to seek better coffee.

They've now bagged that disappointment in this bag. Now, I'm not saying it's Trader Joe's coffee. I'm saying that the contents of this pre-ground coffee are equally disappointing to in-room hotel coffee maker coffee.

The first time I had this I used the same amount of coffee that I would any other brew. It poured a very pale shade of coffee water. I understand fully that this is a light roast. But this was a pale brew even for me.

Worse yet, was that familiar under-flavored coffee taste. It's not often here I've complained about coffee. I've tried my share of light roasts including the now discontinued Trader Joe's Lys Kaffe (and other various small-lot coffees) and didn't mind them.

The next pot was filled to the brim with coffee grounds to get a better brew. I had to use a lot more, but I did not yield a satisfying cup where I desired more than one cup.

Overall

There is nothing complex about this brew. It's basic morning coffee at best. But if you are home, you deserve better. You deserve something that you can drink that will put a smile on your face.

For $3.99 for 14 ounces, this is a relatively inexpensive coffee. But I can taste right through the price on this one. While the small lots are hit or miss, there is something about those single-origin coffees that reminds me of how special coffee can and should be.

Would I buy this again? No, I would not buy Trader Joe's Joe Coffee again.

Trader Joe's Chicken Gyoza Potstickers

Trader Joe's Chicken Gyoza Potstickers bag

Dumplings by any name are delicious. Trader Joe's Chicken Gyoza Potstickers are no exception. So if you are looking for an easy and quick meal then continue reading.

Trader Joe's Chicken Gyoza Potstickers review

Taste and review

Let's say you want pasta, but you are on a diet. Then consider these a happy medium between those two worlds. You can eat pasta and feel full too.

Aside from Trader Joe's, I'm a really big fan of Asian grocery stores. For me locally, that would be H-Mart.

A weekly item on my list from my local H-Mart is dumplings. They have every imaginable style of filling of dumplings available in the frozen foods aisle.

If I can't make a separate trip, then I'm happy to pick these up. The key to really enjoying these is to get a good amount of color on them. If you steam or microwave these, you might not enjoy them as much as you should.

Why call them potstickers? Because that is your hint that they are getting that crispy crust along the bottom.

Now, this has all the expected flavors from soy sauce to cabbage to chicken and onions. So it is more plain tasting than say the pork gyoza potstickers. I also preferred the pork and chicken gyoza to the Thai Shrimp Gyoza. But preference aside, they all cook up as well as the ones I get from H-Mart.

Beyond eating them straight from the pan, I would recommend a dipping sauce. Trader Joe's Gyoza Dipping sauce or soy sauce or even ponzu would all make a good complement to these.

Overall

A highlight for me is the calorie count at 200 calories for 7 potstickers. It is satisfying on many levels. It's having pasta without the guilt. The chicken keeps you pretty full.

Would I buy this again?  Yes, I would buy Trader Joe's Chicken Gyoza Potstickers again. For $2.99 these are fairly priced as well.

Trader Joe's Mango and Cream Bars

Trader Joe's Mango and Cream Bars box

If you've ever wanted dessert in a bar then look no further than this dessert. This has all the classic sweetness of mango paired with half a bar of creamy goodness.

Trader Joe's Mango and Cream Bars Review

Taste and review

Ah, seasonal favorites. This time last year I was busy enjoying a quart of Trader Joe's Mango and Cream Ice Cream. It did not make a return to shelves this year.

While I was bummed out about that fact, I'm kinda happy I found this because it is more portion-controlled. Best of all you won't feel too guilty about having more than one of these as they are 60 calories.

I can see the biggest complaint is that these are not on sticks. These are cute little bars that you'll want to squeeze out of the pouches. So, if you are too anxious and toss the wrapper, you'll need a spoon and bowl to enjoy these.

But what is in the pouch is absolutely delicious fresh as anything mango. If it wasn't frozen, you might be convinced you are eating fresh mango.

Overall

While this is not quite as pretty as the picture on the box, there is also a cream side to this bar which helps to balance the sweetness of these bars.

For $3.49 if you are looking for a fresh and tasty treat, then look no further. These are very well done and an item I've walked past a few too many times. Even my husband liked them.

Would I buy this again? Yes, I would buy Trader Joe's Mango and Cream Bars again. They were refreshing, light, and tasted of delicious mangoes.

Trader Joe's Spicy Cheese Crunchies

Trader Joe's Spicy Cheese Crunchies bag

Every year we have a poetry slam at our school featuring original student-created poetry. Some of the topics were quite intense with some mature beyond their year's topics. One year, one student presented a poem about domestic violence. That was immediately followed by a poem of a completely polar opposite form of intense emotional expression: her undying love of Flamin' Hot Cheetos.

Trader Joe's Spicy Cheese Crunchies review

Yup. It was that kind of an emotional rollercoaster.

It was detailed. It was hilarious. It even brought up the common side effect of eating too many of these. Yup, she brought up the moment when she realized those snacks had passed completely through her digestive tract.

It brought both laughter and tears to my eyes.

Taste and review

All joking aside, but Flamin' Hot Cheetos are pretty darn good in my opinion. In fact, my students, usually have those Cheetos or Takis with them at any given moment.

But then Trader Joe's rolled these out. I grabbed a bag the first time I saw them.

I tried them. And then I was perplexed. And I left this review to sit for a while.

This review has been sitting in a draft folder since May. It's July. I tried them and I really wanted to like them. That bag of Spicy Cheese Crunchies has been sitting on my counter since May untouched beyond a few nibbles since then.

A bag or two of the Flamin' Hot Cheetos have been on my counter and subsequently emptied in that same time period. Mostly by my husband. Some by me just for comparison's sake.

But there is something so addicting about the original that I can't quite put my finger on.

So let's go over where they are similar. Both are hot, reddish-hued (to a different degree), and have some pretty good kick to them.

But for something that looks visually similar, there are some key differences. These are baked leading to a different texture. They were more cheese puff than Cheeto. FHC is far crispier. These are far more mellow in heat where the FHC the heat sneaks up on you.

Then there is the flavor, they are spicy and cheesy but not the same seasoning blend. I'm not sure which flavor it is, but there was just a taste in these that I just did not love.

Then there is the color which is all-natural. Which probably won't have the aforementioned side effect of letting you know when they have passed through your system.

Now, part of me understands people's desire to be healthier. But part of me also knows that when I reach for a bag of chips, it's not to give myself some aspect of nutritional value.

I know when I eat a starburst, it's because it tastes good. I'm not trying to derive any nutritional value from it. But if you are reaching for this bag you are trying to minimize the damage, you aren't saving yourself a ton of calories. In fact, you'll only save 40 calories per serving and 5g of fat.

Overall

Do I think it is worth a try once? Absolutely. Will I buy another bag? Nope. If I'm going to consume something this nutritionally devoid, then I'm going for the extra 40 calories.

For $1.99 it's inexpensive and you may find you love them. I know I might be in the minority by saying that I don't love this product, but I don't think it's bad either. It's just not for everyone or an equal substitute. It's a similar product that will absolutely have its fan base. I can't count myself as one of them.
