Trader Joe's Uncured Ham and Swiss Cheese Flaky Croissant

Trader Joe's Uncured Ham and Swiss Cheese Flaky Croissants

There is no shortage of croissant items at Trader Joe's. In the frozen section are these uncured ham and swiss croissant squares.

Trader Joe's Uncured Ham and Swiss Cheese Flaky Croissant Dough Square review

Taste and review

Maybe croissants are the new cauliflower. One can only hope. It seems like all of a sudden Trader Joe's has rolled out a whole bunch of different croissant-based products.

Now, two items currently remain unchanged: the Chocolate Croissants and the Almond Croissants.

In the last couple of months, we have seen the addition of the Croissini which is like a sesame breadstick. They've even gone back and revised the mini croissants.

The key thing with the addition of the Croissini and the Mini Croissants was they took out the proof time. So on basically no notice you can pop them in the oven and get something delicious.

In true croissant fashion, the second ingredient here is butter. Always a good sign in my book. Also, the calorie count all things considered is pretty reasonable.

No proofing and about 20 in the oven and you have a small but tasty light lunch. When I say light lunch, I do mean you'll probably want a salad or something to go on the side of these.

Each of these is individually wrapped so you could bring them for lunch if you so wanted to, but I think they were wrapped to keep the toppings contained.

Out of the toaster oven, you get a nice flaky croissant base with finely chopped ham and sprinkles of cheese. The Swiss Cheese became more of a crust because I cooked it for the full 20 minutes to ensure the bottom had enough time to create flaky layers.

Overall

I really liked these. The middle was probably the least flaky, but I enjoyed every bite. If your savory side wasn't quite satisfied by the addition of Trader Joe's Croissini then here is your square-shaped savory croissant.

For $4.99 the price is on point too. You'll be lucky to get two of these for that price if you have them out.

Would I buy this again? Yes, I would buy Trader Joe's Uncured Ham and Swiss Cheese Flaky Croissant again.

Trader Joe's Indian Fare Yellow Tadka Dal

Trader Joe's Indian Fare Yellow Tadka Dal package

I adore Indian food. Trader Joe's does it very well in the frozen section. But when it comes to the pouches found in the pantry aisle that is a different story.

Trader Joe's Indian Fare Yellow Tadka Dal review

Taste and review

If Trader Joe's does anything well, it's their line of frozen Indian entrees. It doesn't matter what list you look at, but they rank well.

As for their cans and boxes, not so much.

While they have their fans, they don't hold a candle compared to the frozen entrees.

But now there are two pouches of Indian food ready in 60 seconds in the microwave. There is the Vegetable Tikka and this Yellow Tadka Dal. Both products are made in India.

So, for those of you who are newer to Indian cuisine, dal is lentils. Tadka is a process by which these lentils are tempered with oil and spices. The lentils here seemed a touch overcooked.

What you have here are fully cooked lentils in a spicy, yellow, and deeply flavored sauce. While the turmeric lends most of the color here, for me the curry leaves and cumin added the most flavor. This is also mild to medium in heat.

What to serve with this

You'll probably want something to go along with it. Rice, Malabari paratha, or naan make a great pairing. I also added some fresh cilantro after the pictures were taken. I thought it added to the dish.

Make this better at home

The following recipe is vegan, made in the slow cooker, and will run laps around this pouch. It will also work out to be cheaper per serving as well. Check out Picky Eater's Slow Cooker Yellow Dal.

Overall

For $1.99 this is worthy of a try. For me, the spice blend did not do it for me the way that a tikka would. But that is a matter of personal preference.

Would I buy this again? Whether or not you like this will come down to personal preference, but Trader Joe's Indian Fare Yellow Tadka Dal was well spiced, but I prefer their Masala dishes. On a personal level, this is a no. But this is still better than anything I had that came in a box or a can from Trader Joe's. It's just not frozen Indian entree awesomeness.

Trader Joe's Pollo Asado Autentico Review: Winner, Winner Citrus Chicken Dinner

An unopened package of Trader Joe's Pollo Asado Autentico

Trader Joe's Pollo Asado Autentico is one of those pre-marinated chicken options that makes dinner a breeze. Found in the refrigerated section, this product features thinly sliced chicken breast marinated in a bright, citrusy blend of orange and lime juice, garlic, onion, and mild chili spices.

Unlike some of Trader Joe's other pre-marinated chicken items that lean heavy on spice or dark meat (looking at you, Chicken Shawarma), this one sticks to white meat - making it a solid choice for those who prefer leaner protein and subtler flavors.

The marinade itself is slightly tangy with a gentle kick of heat, but nothing overwhelming. It's the kind of flavor that pairs with just about anything: tacos, salads, burrito bowls, or even a simple side of rice and beans.

Trader Joe's Pollo Asado Autentico review #traderjoes

Review

If I had to pick one white-meat chicken item from Trader Joe's that I buy again and again, it's this one. The Pollo Asado Autentico might not grab attention with fancy packaging or fiery spice, but it delivers exactly what you want from a quick, flavorful weeknight meal: juicy, tender chicken that tastes freshly grilled.

Each package comes with two well-sized chicken cutlets, evenly marinated and ready to go. The bright, citrus-forward marinade gives the meat a punch of flavor without drying it out - which is the biggest danger when cooking chicken breast.

I cooked mine in a cast iron pan over medium-high heat, and it came out perfectly golden with just a touch of char. If you want to speed things up, slice the chicken before cooking; it not only reduces the cooking time but also ensures even browning.

The flavor reminds me a bit of a restaurant-style grilled chicken taco filling: mildly spicy, tangy, and versatile. It's not as bold or exotic as some of Trader Joe's newer marinades, but it's one of those reliable, crowd-pleasing staples that works year-round.

If you're someone who prefers bolder seasoning, you can easily dress it up. Add a squeeze of fresh lime, a spoonful of Trader Joe's Chile Lime Seasoning Blend.

FAQs about Trader Joe's Pollo Asado Autentico

The following are commonly asked questions about this product:

How long does it last?

Typically about 5 days in the fridge unopened, but always check the package for exact expiration dates.

What's the best way to cook it?

Pan-searing or grilling brings out the best texture and flavor, but it also works well in the oven or air fryer.

Can I cook it in the air fryer?

Yes! Cook at 375°F for 8-10 minutes, flipping halfway through, until the internal temperature reaches 165°F.

Final Thoughts

Trader Joe's Pollo Asado Autentico is one of those easy weeknight winners that belongs in your regular rotation. It's flavorful, juicy, and flexible enough to fit into countless meal ideas - from tacos to salads.

It may not be the boldest marinade in the Trader Joe's lineup, but it's one of the most dependable and delicious. If you're a fan of simple, fresh-tasting chicken dishes, this one deserves a spot in your cart.

However, it is worth noting that since the original publishing of this review the price of this item has skyrocketed. It was $3.99 per pound in 2018. It is now almost $9 per pound. It was a great deal closer to $4. But at $9 per pound there are some fully cooked options priced nearly the same which is a shame.

Trader Joe's Brown Sugar and Cinnamon Butter Spread

A new package of Trader Joe's Brown Sugar and Cinnamon Butter Spread

Butter. The pantry staple that most of us can't live without. Anything mixed into it is referred to as compound butter. Thus that is why this is labeled as a butter spread.

Trader Joe's Brown Sugar and Cinnamon Butter Spread

Taste and review

Sweet and savory butter has come to the shelves of Trader Joe's. The savory is Trader Joe's Roasted Garlic and Herb Butter Spread. This on the other hand is the sweet answer to the savory.

Now, this past winter Trader Joe's experimented with the addition of the nearly similar-looking tub of Black Truffle Butter. It was very popular among the truffle lovers out there.

But it sold out and the season was over.

Enter this summer. Two nearly identical tubs of butter have made their way onto store shelves. While they might sound reasonably priced at $2.49. This is smaller than a stick of butter.

So this product clocks in at nearly $11 a pound. While Black truffle wasn't in most home cooks' kitchens, I'm willing to bet that brown sugar and cinnamon are on your shelf.

Now, price complaints aside, this is pretty good. You might miss the grittiness that sugar and butter have that makes them so magical in cookie dough.

But this isn't going to be turned into cookie dough either. Here is something that will play well with sweet potatoes, bread, and toast, among other pairings.

It's more assertive on the cinnamon than the brown sugar.

Overall

As I said, this would be easy to make at home (or in the event, they discontinue it for any reason). Be sure to reach for good quality butter. My favorite is Trader Joe's Cultured Butter.  But if you check out this recipe, you'll see just how easy it is. Best of all, all the ingredients combined won't set you back $11.

Currently, this product as of 6/2025 has been continued and been replaced by a seasonal Trader Joe's Brown Sugar and Maple Syrup butter that was sold around the holidays.

Would I buy this again? I'd make this at home first before buying Trader Joe's Brown Sugar and Cinnamon Butter Spread again. It's not a criticism of the product, but for the price, this should be a lot larger.

Trader Joe's Indian Fare Tikka Vegetables

An unopened package of Trader Joe's Indian Fare Tikka Vegetables package

Trader Joe's Indian Fare Tikka Vegetables is different from the frozen entrees. But this is a step up from the boxed variety and uses less packaging

Trader Joe's Indian Fare Tikka Vegetables review #traderjoes

Taste and review

In the early days of this blog, I pretty much did a straight run through the frozen Indian entrees at Trader Joe's. And it wasn't because I had eaten Indian food on a regular basis. It was through a conversation with my then physical therapist.

Before I started this blog, I intended on this being a full cooking blog. I fell down a partial flight of stairs and in doing so sprained not one, but both ankles badly.

I'm not sure why the female body can create a human being in nine months, but if you wreck your ankles you are never quite 100% again.

So over the course of physical therapy, I got to know the guy who got me walking again quite well. He was Indian and it was almost lunch time.

Naturally, the conversation headed towards what we were planning for lunch. I brought it up that I had never had Indian food. He recommended chicken tikka masala as a starting point.

Since grocery shopping was my big weekly outing (not to mention walking with a shopping cart was incredibly therapeutic when learning how to walk correctly) Trader Joe's Chicken and Paneer Tikka Masala ended up in my cart.

I was in love.  I was also bummed out that I had been missing out for so long.

Needless to say, I've consumed quite a few of those over the last two years.

I did eventually venture in the canned and boxed Indian foods, but never found them quite as good.

This on the other hand was pretty good for something out of a pouch.

It is mild to medium in heat. I looked at the bag and was instantly unsure as to whether this would be a full serving. With the addition of rice, you'll have 2 satisfying meals.

Within the deeply spiced tomato sauce you have chunks of potatoes, corn, peas, and carrots. The heat is enough to slow you down from devouring this meal (unless you are a spicy junky). Beyond the pretty good flavor here, it only takes 60 seconds in the microwave until it is done.

What to serve with this

The picture on the back of this pouch makes it even more carb heavy with the addition of naan. Naan would make a good side to this was well.

But I do think you can make this a touch better with one single addition: cilantro. It's pictured on the front and the back, but is omitted in the ingredient list. I added some to mine (after taking these pictures) and felt it truly made a difference.

Overall

This is a different tikka recipe than the chicken, paneer, or vegan tikkas found in the freezer aisle. Those are also complete meals that cost twice as much. Both new Indian Fare pouches are priced at $1.99. It's a reasonable price for a filling an inexpensive lunch. If you get two servings out of it, then it is better than anything you can reach for on a dollar menu.

Would I buy this again? Yes, I would buy Trader Joe's Indian Fare Tikka Vegetables again.
